Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

The Praxis Core exam measures academic skills in reading, writing, and math which are

essential for the people who are preparing to become educators. I must pass the Praxis Core

exam to be admitted to the college of education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV)

where I plan to further my education. I plan to get a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education

with an emphasis in mathematics. For the Nevada Department of Education, the passing score

for the Praxis reading exam is 156 and the passing score for the Praxis writing exam is 162. Also,

the passing score for the Praxis math exam is 150.

Exam Preparation

Before taking the Praxis Core practice tests I read about the test on the ETS website. The

ETS website was very informative and it gives options on how to prepare for the exam. I

prepared to take the Praxis Core practice tests by using the Praxis preparation website Mometrix.

However, I did not do the practice problems that ETS offers which would have helped me for the

Praxis Core practice tests. I also started using Khan Academy which offers free Praxis

preparation. However, I did not make enough time to study for the Praxis Core practice tests.

Exam Results

I took the Praxis Core practice tests that Teachers Test Prep offers, and these are the

scores. In reading, I scored in the 59% range, which means that I need significant improvement

before taking the official Praxis Core exam. In writing, I scored in the 70% range, which means

that I am borderline to passing the writing section when I take the official Praxis Core exam. In

math, I scored in the 63% range, which means that I need improvement before taking the official

Praxis Core exam. I thought I was going to score better in all the Praxis practice tests but I know

I did not prepare enough to get a better score.

Future Exam Preparation

To prepare myself for the official Praxis Core exam I will dedicate two to three hours a

day to study. I will study for the official Praxis Core exam by using the Khan Academy free

Praxis preparation which offers study guides and timed practice tests. I will also use the free

Praxis preparation websites that I have been provided with such as Mometrix, ETS, and Teachers

Test Prep. Also, I will use the resources and practice tests the CSN library offers for the Praxis

Core exam. I hope with this future preparation I pass the official Praxis Core exam on the first

try.
