Jessica Mattly is a training manager at the Hilton San
Diego Bayfront, as well as a board member for the Hospitality Human Resource Association. She is most proud of her title as a storyteller and this is what she focuses on while presenting to students on how to create a resume that will give you the best chance of being brought in for an interview. The eight best practices to follow in a resume was what was presented and each step came with personal reflection as well as how to best present yourself over a piece of paper. Jessica emphasized on talking yourself up and using metrics where they were best applicable in order to make what you were doing look more enhanced and therefore more intriguing to future hirers. She as well supplied a list of formats, font types, that allow for an easy read and still present a professional style to the resume. Jessica also showed how you may have to make a different resume for each job you decide or choose to apply to because certain work histories may look better in certain fields than in others. The whole copy and paste resume to every job is no longer the best way to search and in many situations adding a personal touch to your resume or cover letter for the intended job may just give you that leg up on the competition. Once you have received the call back and have been called in for a face to face interview this is where Jessica’s story telling prowess came through. Jessica told how you wanna be able to know and repeat your story in order to explain how every piece of experience you have gained through life or work experience has given you what you need to thrive in the occupation that you are interviewing for. In certain situations being able to present such skills of problem solving or being a good team player can make you a more desirable candidate in the hiring process. Kate had numerous jobs before she had found her current job at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront and she used this large work experience of hers to construct a story web. This furthermore showed and gave first hand examples of her story telling ability and she was able to link experience from one job to another and how all of them have helped her become the person that she is today. After the meeting I was able to have a conversation with Jessica and be able to pull her experience from the Hospitality business and see what the best route for a job would be. She predicted in a way how the hotels were going to stop hiring and how the whole industry may be put at a stand still because of this current coronavirus epidemic that we find ourselves in. She did talk about how it is important to still get my resume out and test the waters because it is about trial and error and being able to see which work experiences work in certain industries and which ones aren’t necessarily valued.
