This document lists 15 types of culture media used in microbiology and their classifications and functions. The media include those for transporting organisms, enrichment, selective and differential growth, and general purposes. Transport media like Amie's and Cary Blair media maintain viability during transport to the lab. Enrichment media like alkaline peptone water and gram negative broth are used to increase pathogen numbers. Enriched media like chocolate agar support growth of fastidious organisms. Selective and differential media like HE agar aid in distinguishing bacterial types.

1. Transport Amie’s Medium To maintain viability of the
organisms from source to the laboratory 2. Transport Cary and Blair Medium To maintain viability of the organisms from source to the laboratory 3. Enrichment Alkaline Peptone Water To increase the no. of pathogenic Vibrio in the specimen 4. Enrichment Broth Gram Negative Broth To increase the no. of pathogens in stool 5. Enriched Chocolate Agar Enriched with heated blood For cultivation of most organisms esp. Haemophilus and Neissera spp. 6. Enriched Dextrose Ascitic Fluid Agar To isolate organisms in CSF 7. Enriched and Blood Agar -Enriched with unheated blood differential -Differentiates organism through 8. Reducing or anaerobic Anaerobic Blood Agar For isolation of all anaerobes 9. Reducing or anaerobic Anaerobic Phenylethyl Alcohol -For isolation of obligate gr+ Agar and gr- anaerobes. -Inhibits growth of enteric bacilli and swarming of Proteus 10. Reducing or anaerobic Anaerobic Kanamycin For isolation of gr- anaerobes Vancomycin Blood Agar esp. Bacteriodes, Prevotella and some Fusobacterium 11. Reducing or anaerobic Anaerobic Kanamycin -For isolation of gr- anaerobes Vancomycin Laked Blood Agar esp. Bacteriodes, Prevotella and some Fusobacterium. -Detection of pigment production of Prevotella 12. Selective and Bacteriodes Bile Esculin (BBE) -Selective for Bacteriodes sps. differential -Used to differentiate bile resistant from bile sensitive Bacteriodes sps. 13. Selective and Eosin Methylene Blue Agar -Selective for gr- enteric bacilli. differential - It differentiates lactose from non-lactose fermenting gr- enteric bacilli 14. Selective and Hektoen Enteric Agar -Selective for gr- enteric bacilli. differential - It differentiates lactose from non-lactose fermenting gr- enteric bacilli 15. Basic or general Brain Heart Infusion broth or Basic medium for isolation of purpose medium agar microorganisms and can be used for preparing pure culture for antibiotic susceptibility test
