• Recently, Indian Oil has announced that it will use its refinery operations to convert the
single use plastic waste into a specialised bitumen that can be used for construction of roads
and highways.
• A pilot project has been started at Faridabad via the creation of a "Single Use Waste Plastic"
based bituminous road.
• The company will commercially supply the specialised bitumen for use in road construction
going ahead.
• It has been done to support the government's drive to eliminate single use plastic by
converting these toxic wastes to productive use.
• Furthermore, Indian Oil has also issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for procurement of
single-use plastic waste which can be economically converted into the specialised bitumen.
• These initiatives were launched to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and
as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

import of fossil fuel.
• The analysis focuses on 10 Indian states that have a notified EV policy or a draft policy

• It has been launched on a pilot basis in 75 districts across Gujarat, Karnataka, Meghalaya,

21-30 years age-group, have a graduation degree from a recognized university and be citizens

been released by World Bank, according to which Bangladesh has become the second
fastest growing economy in south Asia after Bhutan.
Key findings of the report
• Bangladesh and Nepal are estimated to grow faster than India in 2019.
• Growth in South Asia is projected to fall to 5.9% in 2019, casting uncertainty about a rebound
in the short term.
• Imports have declined severely across South Asia, contracting between 15 and 20% in
Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
• In India, domestic demand has slipped, with private consumption growing 3.1% in the last
quarter from 7.3% a year ago, while manufacturing growth plummeted to below 1% in the
second quarter of 2019 compared to over 10 per cent a year ago.

• The government plans to pick 100 girl students from over 550 districts from 2020 to 2025
to pursue higher education in STEM and allied subjects.
• The girl students selected for the programme will be selected on the basis of their percentile
score.

• As part of the programme, the Department will hold science camps for girl students in and
around premier technology institutes such as IITs and NITs.

• CBSE (Know your aptitude) KYA exam will assess a student's weaknesses and strengths in
academics.
• This exam should be taken voluntarily by interested students and must not be used to impose

2.87 Odisha government plans to make state child marriage free by 2030
[Gender Issues]
• Recently, the Department of Women and Child Development and Mission Shakti, Odisha has
launched a state Strategic Action Plan (SAP) with the support of UNICEF & UNFPA, in a bid
to end child marriage in Odisha.
• The State Strategic Action Plan is a comprehensive and time-bound approach to accelerate
actions to deal with the complexities of ending child marriage, and it will be implemented from
2019 to 2024.
Relevance
• According to National Family Health Survey-4, the prevalence of child marriages among girls
in Odisha was reported to be 21.3 percent against a national average of 26.8, whereas for
boys it is only 11 per cent against the national average of 20.3 per cent.

• The loan from the World Bank, has a 6-year grace period, and a maturity of 24 years.
• The project "The Odisha Integrated Irrigation Project for Climate Resilient Agriculture" will
be implemented in Odisha's rural areas which are vulnerable to droughts and largely

• It will benefit about 125,000 smallholder farmer households from 15 districts of Odisha
managing 128,000 hectares of agricultural land.

• A World Trade Organization (WTO) upheld a complaint brought by the United States against
India.
• It has ruled that Indian export subsidies are prohibited and should be removed.
• The panel largely agreed with US claims challenging export subsidies granted in the form of
exemptions from customs duties and a national tax, while rejecting some US arguments.
• It called on India to withdraw the export-contingent subsidies within periods varying from 90
to 180 days.
