Lower Half Lesson

● Objective:
○ Students will understand and be able to replicate the appropriate uses for the
lower third of the bow in music
● Procedure:
○ Students will:
○ Take the pretest
○ Identify the lower third of the bow
○ Play a G major scale using only the lower third of the bow
○ Discuss what they notice about the feel, sound production, etc, while playing with
the lower third
○ Write what they say on the board
○ Discover what dynamic they believe would be most easily produced using the
lower third
■ Looking for: forte
○ Play forte using the lower third
○ Discover what articulations would be most easily produced using the lower third
■ Accents, marcato, spiccato (at balance point)
○ Play accents, then marcato, then spiccato using the lower third
○ Discover whether fast, slow, or medium tempo would be best suited to the lower
third of the bow
■ Slow and medium
Middle Third lesson

● Objective:
○ Students will understand and be able to replicate the appropriate uses for the
middle third of the bow in music
● Procedure:
○ Students will:
○ Identify the middle third of the bow
○ Play a G major scale using only the middle third of the bow
○ Discuss what they notice about the feel, sound production, etc, while playing with
the middle third
○ Write what they say on the board
○ Discover what dynamic they believe would be most easily produced using the
lower third
■ Looking for: mf, f, mp, p (versatile)
○ Play all dynamics using middle third
○ Discover what articulations would be most easily produced using the middle third
■ (spiccato), staccato, legato
○ Play staccato and legato using the middle third
○ Discover whether fast, slow, or medium tempo would be best suited to the lower
third of the bow
■ Fast! Also slow and medium
Upper third lesson

● Objective:
○ Students will understand and be able to replicate the appropriate uses for the
upper third of the bow in music
● Procedure:
○ Students will:
○ Identify the upper third of the bow
○ Play a G major scale using only the upper third of the bow
○ Discuss what they notice about the feel, sound production, etc, while playing with
the upper third
○ Write what they say on the board
○ Discover what dynamic they believe would be most easily produced using the
lower third
■ Looking for: p, pp, pm
○ Play all dynamics using upper third
○ Discover what articulations would be most easily produced using the upper third
■ legato
○ Play legato using the upper third
○ Discover whether fast, slow, or medium tempo would be best suited to the upper
third of the bow
■ Fast, medium, slow all work, medium is more comfortable
