Final Reflection

After being assigned the research paper, there were several aspects that I’ve faced

throughout the entire research process. Looking for different secondary sources and finding

evidence from the primary source poems created several challenges, but I was able to have great

success when writing the essay as a whole. Being able to create a rough draft and have the help

of my classmates with a peer response, was definitely useful to find the flaws within my MLA

formatting, but also with the overview of my essay as whole. Although the paper was

challenging, it helped me understand how to interpret my viewpoints on a topic and incorporate

them into my paper, expressing them to my readers.

One of the hardest parts of researching was having to analyze the sources themselves, the

poetry was very complex that I had read several times before getting the full understanding. Half

of texts that I had to analyze were poems, which I started out by giving my before and after

thoughts of the poems with reflections, but once I gave my thoughts I annotated each of the

poems two lines at time, in order to be able to go back and understand the context of the quotes

when using them as evidence. Comparing the poetry to the other types of texts that I used were

articles, where I analyzed different articles that corresponded with the viewpoint I was giving in

my thesis. Once I figured out what evidence I wanted to use, the evaluation of the two different

style of texts came from figuring out the placement of them in my essay, presenting a clear

understanding to the readers.

Another factor that contributed to my research papers was the help from my peers as I

was able to get another viewpoint on my essay from someone else’s thoughts. I was able to learn

that the research I conducted wasn’t fully ready to be presented yet, once I got the feedback from

my classmates, for example this correlated to how there were several MLA mistakes within my

paper, but once it was spotted by another person I was able to fix them. Also, once I read another

classmate's paper I was able to see where I was along the way when conducting my paper, it was

good to see someone else’s thoughts compared to mine which helped me fix my paper. It was a

little bit different while using MLA citing and documentation with the SAC library sources, as

your citations needed to be correct, and incorporated in your essay correctly in order for the

paper to follow MLA guidelines. I didn’t want to make any mistakes, so the Purdue Owl website

was very useful when wrapping up my essay in MLA format.

Eventually when writing this research paper, I most definitely ran into some challenges

but also had great success when writing the paper. One of the biggest challenges that I faced

during the research process was breaking down Sylvia Plath’s poetry to correspond with the idea

that I was trying to influence my readers. Also, it was pretty difficult when looking for a counter

example towards the end of my essay, as each essay should incorporate the opposition idea of the

topic, where breaking down and finding a source and quote from my primary source was pretty

difficult. The overall success of my paper came from being able to express my viewpoint through

my thesis, as I found good factual information that backed up the topics of my body paragraphs.

This would lead to me learning about convincing readers to understand my interpretations, as I

figured out if you don’t present your idea first, then find a quotation to back up your thoughts it

is going to be difficult to be convinced of your theories, if they are just opinions without factual

information. If you want to convince or present an idea to a reader, there must be an exclamation

followed by textual evidence that is valid, in order to make a render say “oh I’ve never thought

of that before”.

Without a doubt there were several challenges when conducting the research process for

this paper, but a lot of good came out of it as well. Viewing my essay from the eyes of another

reader was very helpful, as it made me recognize my flaws within the paper, but made me

analyze my sources again to get the full understanding of the work. Discovering new resources

through the SAC databases was very useful when it came to MLA format and citing, but

showing me Purde Owl as well. Furthermore, the paper taught me how to convince a reader

through a viewpoint that has factual information, to make readers have second thoughts on your

opinion.
