Summary of pages
This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii,
pages 1 to 9 and a back cover.

document was last issued.
1 Scope
This British Standard specifies requirements for three types of intermediate coating, type A, type B and
type C, which when incorporated in a paint scheme between primer and finish, allow selective removal of
the finish using a defined paint remover. The paint scheme, including the intermediate coating, is intended
for application to metallic and non-metallic surfaces for aerospace purposes, to provide equivalent
protection against corrosion and mechanical damage, and resistance to aircraft fluids, to that provided by
a paint scheme consisting of primer and finish alone.
Type A intermediate coating is intended to function with a finish conforming to type A of the latest edition
of BS X 34, where maximum resistance to fluid attack is required.
Type B intermediate coating is intended to function with a finish conforming to type B of the latest edition
of BS X 34, offering increased tolerance to flexing compared with type A finish.
Type C intermediate coating is intended to function with a finish conforming to BS X 34 and
DEF STAN 00-72 [1] for the protection of military aircraft requiring resistance to chemical warfare agents
and decontaminants.
Annex A gives information on application for type approval.
2 Normative references

revisions of the cited publication apply to this British Standard only when incorporated in the reference by
amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of the cited publication applies, together
with any amendments.

Annex C (normative)
Method for determination of ability to selectively remove
C.1 Prepare test panels in accordance with Annex B and age in accordance with test 10) of Table 3. Mask
off at least 20 mm from the panel edges with metal foil tape.
C.2 With the panel held horizontally, evenly apply reference paint remover conforming to 4.5 of
BS X 36:1998, by means of a brush, at a coverage of approximately 300 g/m2. Leave surfaces up to
approximately 20 mm from the panel edges uncoated. Determine the time required to degrade the adhesion
of the finish to a condition that permits its removal with a polythene scraper. Remove the degraded
material and clean the remaining paint film in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
C.3 If required, apply one additional coat of paint remover, not less than 1 h after the first, and repeat the
removal procedure specified in C.2.
C.4 Allow the panel to stand horizontally for 15 min with free air access, but not exposed to draughts. Wash
the face of the panel under a jet of water not exceeding 25 °C, swabbing the surface gently with clean cotton
wool. After 24 h, examine the remaining film of primer, or primer and intermediate coating, for any
indication of degradation.
Annex D (normative)
Method for determination of ability to restore the paint scheme after selective
removal
After selective removal of the paint scheme, and cleaning and inspection of the panels in accordance
with Annex C, restore the scheme in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and B.4.
