Key Challenges
• No clear demarcation between client and transport equipment
• Typically there exists no transport NMS for the central office equipment

• Root cause analysis is difficult as there is only limited information available at the
central node about the far end

ALM16
How does ALM works?

The integrity of the fiber is monitored by measuring the reflection of a laser at 1650nm that is
co-propagated with the traffic signal(s)

• The intensity of the reflected demarcation peak provides • By measuring the Rayleigh scattering power the location
an estimate of the insertion loss of the link of the fiber-cut can be detected

In-line vs dedicated Fiber Monitoring

In-line Monitoring Dedicated Fiber Monitoring

• Efficient Fiber Use: Data can be transported over the • Fiber-cut detection: Single fiber per duct is dedicated for
fiber that is monitored the detection of fiber-cuts
• High SLA: The quality of the data signal is monitored in- • Cost-effective Monitoring: Reduced complexity and cost
line where all insertion loss and reflections events are as no passive optics are required in this architecture
detected and localized

Invest in Passive Optics Passive Optics can be installed

required from day 1 day 2 if needed

With dedicated fiber monitoring CAPEX can be significantly reduced
