I.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
At the end of the class, 100% of the students should be able to learn 75% of the lesson and be
able to:
 solve quadratic equations using Quadratic Formula;
 determine the number of solutions using the discriminant; and
 formulate quadratic equations in real-life situation using quadratic formula.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Subject : Mathematics 9
Topic : SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATION USING QUADRATIC FORMULA
Reference : Mathematics 9 – Learners Material, pages 47 – 54, Internet
Materials : PowerPoint Presentation, chalk and board, activity sheet

III. LESSON PROCEDURE:

A. Pre-activities
1. Daily Activities
a. Prayer
b. Checking of Attendance
c. Collecting of Assignments

2. Motivation
Pre-Assessment: The students perform activities that would help them recall
different mathematics concepts previously studied. Provide them
with opportunities to connect this concept, solving quadratic
equations by using quadratic formula.
These students will by describing and simplifying expressions
involving square roots and other mathematics concepts. This
activity will familiarize them with these kinds of expression and
how they are simplified.

Title: IT’S GOOD TO BE SIMPLE!

Direction: Work with a partner in simplifying each of the following expressions.
6+ √ 9
1.
2(3)
6− √9
2.
2(3)
−6+ √ 18
3.
2(2)
−9− √ 24
4.
2( 2)
−8+ √ 64−28
5.
2(−3)
−6− √ 36−20
6.
2(1)
5+ √ 25+100
7.
2(4 )
−10+ √ 102−52
8.
2(3)

B. Presentation:
 Tell the students that the activity has connection to the topic. Tell them that it
can solve all higher value of quadratic equation in easier way. Tell them that
some quadratic equation cannot be solve by factoring and completing the square
so this quadratic formula is the best solution.

C. Discussion:
1. Introduce the formula:

2. Steps in solving quadratic equation using quadratic formula.

3. Example:

4. Give more examples:

a. 2 x2 +9 x=10
b. −2 x2 =2−7 x
c. 10+7 x−3 x 2=0
C. Generalization:
 Ask the students once again to memorize the quadratic formula in solving quadratic
equation.
 Ask what are the steps in solving quadratic equation using quadratic formula.

D. Application:
Title: WHY DO THE GARDENS HAVE TO BE ADJACENT?
Direction: Form 5 groups. Use the situation below to answer the questions that
follow.
Mr. Bonifacio would like to enclose his two
adjacent rectangular gardens with 70.5 m of
fencing materials. The gardens are of the same
size and their total area is 180 m2.

1. How would you represent the dimensions of

each garden?
2. What mathematical sentence would represent the length of fencing material to be used in
enclosing the two gardens?
3. How about mathematical sentence that would represent the total area of the two gardens?
4. How will you find the dimensions of each gardens?
5. What equation will you use in finding the dimensions of each garden?

IV. ASSESSMENT:
Title: IS THE FORMULA EFFECTIVE?
Direction: Find the solutions of each of the following quadratic equations using the quadratic
formula.
2
1. x + 10 x +9=0
2. 2 x2 +7 x +9=0
3. 4 x2 −4 x +1=0
4. x 2+ 7 x =4
5. 2 x2 + 4 x=3

V. ASSIGNMENT:
Answer the following.
The values of a, b, and c of a quadratic equation written in standard form are -2, 8, and 3,
respectively. Another quadratic equation has 2, -8, and -3 as the values of a, b, and c,
respectively. Do you agree that the two equations have the same solutions? Justify your
answer.
