The passive voice:
The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or thing that is the object of an
action, instead of the person or thing that performs the action. In other words, the
most importan person or thing becomes the subject of the sentence.
Example:
The House was built in 1654.
A great deal of meaning is conveyed by a few well-chosen words.
Sometimes we use the passive voice because we do not know or do not want to
mention who carried out the action.
The passive voice is usually used in formal texts. Switching to the active voice will
make what you write clearer and easier to read.
FORMATION OF THE PASSIVE VOICE:
In English, the passive voice is made up of two elements:
the appropriate form of the verb "to be" + "past participle"
Past simple:
The "simple past" is used to talk about an action that ended at a time prior to the
current one. The duration is not relevant. The time in which the action is located can
be the recent past or a distant past.
EXAMPLES
John Cabot sailed to America in 1498.
My father died last year.
Present perfect
The present perfect tense is a verb tense in the English language that narrates events
that have already occurred at a specific time or in the past but that still have relevance
in the present.
Example:
I hace worked here for a year
Past perfect
This verb tense is used to indicate the past moment when something happened prior to
another event also occurred in the past tense.
Since the past perfect simple indicates that the situation or event has already ended, it
always emphasizes the result.
Example:
I had saved the file before the computer turned off
Future simple:
Future Simple with will is the future in English that allows you to express spontaneous
decisions about future actions, predictions or future events that cannot be altered. It is
formed with the auxiliary verb will and the infinitive of the main verb.
Used to talk about future predictions based on things that are not so obvious
Example:
I Will go the university
Present continous:
The passive voice with the present continuous (first person), 'am I being told', is used
here to focus on the action of 'being told'. An exam is being held next week. The
present continuous in the passive voice 'is being held' is used to emphasize 'exam'.
Example:
The books are being put in the wrong place
Present perfect:
The passive voice in the present perfect, 'has been done', is used because the subject is
not relevant. We don't know 'what has been done'. Tesla electric cars have already
been bought by loads of people.
Example:
The car has been washed
The car has been being washed
Past perfect:
The passive tense "Past Perfect" time answers the question: "What had been done?" /
What had been done? or "What had been being done?" / What had been done?
Example:
The car had been washed
The car had been being washed
