5. New features

a. End-of-Probe Analysis ( EOPA )

Please note that due to the nature of this method it cannot be applied with interface measurements,
applications with a "water" bottom or in case of stratifying liquids. When interface & level is
selected as a Measurement Type you will not be able to turn on the EoP analysis.
When EOPA is enabled and the calculated or inferred level is used, a diagnostic warning of
"Inferred Level" will be present, see below.

The EOPA algorithm uses the following logic:

1. If the end-of-probe location is more than 51 mm beyond the expected location (from the Probe
Length parameter), then compute inferred level from end-of-probe displacement
2. If the displacement of the end-of-probe pulse is less than 51 mm, there will be no inferred level
computed and the device will show dry probe.

Conclusion : with a low dielectric material, there could be a jump in reported level down to Dry
Probe if the level pulse is missed when measuring a low dielectric fluid that doesn’t move the EOP
pulse by a significant amount.

Please note :
For the case that at some time a valid level is read and EOPA is active, and then the level pulse gets
smaller so that the threshold is not crossed. If the displacement of the end-of-probe pulse is less
than 51 mm, there will be no inferred level computed and the device will continue to report the last
known good level (and the Upper Echo Lost diagnostic will become active).

Examples:
1. 55 cm of liquid DK=1.2
The liquid will cause a shift of the end of probe pulse of 55*( sqrt(1.2)-1) = 5.25 cm
2. 24 cm of liquid with a DK=1.5
The liquid will cause a shift of the end of probe pulse of 24*( sqrt(1.5)-1) = 5.39 cm
In both cases the shift is above 51mm and so the unit will compute the inferred level from end-of-
probe displacement.
Page | 11
Setup using Pactware:

Select the Device Setup tab, then select the Advanced Config tab. In the lower left corner select the
correct Polarity for the End of Probe pulse, then turn on the EoP Analysis. The EoP Dielectric box
will then appear. Fill in the correct Dielectric of the medium you are measuring.

Please note that the unit will try to calculate the Dielectric when both level and EoP are detected
and write this value in the Advanced Diagnostics EoP Measured Diel box, see below :

Page | 12
b. Sloped Threshold

In PactWare select the Device Setup tab and then the Advanced Config tab.
In Threshold Settings select Sloped in the Lvl Tresh Mode dropdown box.
Then set the Sloped Start Value, Lvl Tresh Value and Sloped End Distance.

The result can be checked on the Echo Curve.

Lvl Tresh Value

Sloped End Distance

Page | 13
c. Echo rejection

Setup using PACTware :

Select the Diagnostics tab and then the Echo Curve tab. Then click on New Rejection Curve

You will get a warning regarding the loop, hit OK. On the next screen you need to enter the actual
media location and then hit OK.

Next a password window might appear if the password was not already entered. Enter the password
( 126 ) and hit OK. The system then calculates the curve and saves it. Hit OK to confirm.

Page | 14
A warning screen is shown that the loop can be returned to automatic control.

At this point the echo rejection curve can be viewed by selecting Rejection Curve as Curve 2 in the
lower left corner of the screen. The Rejection curve will then be displayed in red as shown in the
screenshot at the start of this chapter.

Page | 15
d. Buildup Detection

Setup using PACTware :

Buildup Detection is a feature that needs to be turned on in Advanced Config , see below :

Once turned on progress can be checked in the Advanced Diagnostics screen, see below :
Alternatively the buildup percentage can be output via Hart as a secondary, tertiary or quaternary
value. It is also shown on the home screen. The Percent of Level Treshold can also be shown on the
display. Select View for the Probe Buildup in the Local Display Config tab.

The transmitter does monitor probe buildup every 5 minutes. That is to perform the check
frequently enough so that an overnight issue (such as condensation on the seal face of a steam
probe) will be caught.
Page | 16
For the Buildup percentage reading, the waveform is scanned between the seal face or Blocking
Distance (whichever is lower on the probe) and the start of the level pulse or the end of the probe
(whichever is higher on the probe).
The transmitter monitors up to 5 locations for estimating the rate of buildup. The interval between
rate checking varies. The minimum length of the interval is a week. If the rate is changing very
slowly, the interval may be increased in one week increments. The intent is to provide a long
enough time base compared to the rate of change to provide a reasonable estimate of the rate. If the
Buildup percentage suddenly increases, the rate checking interval is reset to one week.
A record is kept of the 5 locations with the highest negative signal amplitudes. If a new location is
found, and the amplitude is higher than the lowest amplitude of the existing 5 locations, the location
with the smallest amplitude is replaced by the new location. If two nearby locations begin to
overlap each other, they are merged into a single location and the other record is cleared, ready to
accept a new location if needed.

6. Threshold settings

a. Level measurement

Below are two examples of echo curves using different dielectric ranges.
For optimal accuracy Dielectric Range settings should match the dielectric value of the fluid you
are trying to measure and the threshold should be set to Auto Largest.

Medium : Water

Medium : Oil

Page | 18
In the oil and gas world we recommend as standard settings :

Fixed for Level Treshold Mode

1.7 – 3 for Dielectric Range.

This will provide a robust setting giving reliable measurements. Of course the Dielectric Range
needs to be adjusted if the DK of the "oil" is expected to be lower then 1.7. Please note that the
threshold line is now closer to the baseline compared to the previous example where Auto Largest
was used.
This will introduce an offset in the measurement which can be corrected by entering a Level Trim.
( Advanced Config )
Applications with possible "water bottoms" or stratifying liquids can thus be handled reliably.

Medium : Oil

Page | 19
b. Interface Measurement

To measure interface Magnetrol recommends using Fixed Value for Lvl Tresh Mode and Auto
Largest for Ifc Lvl Tresh Mode as shown below.

Check Markers are on

Make sure the correct dielectric for the upper layer is entered in the Basic Config screen as shown
below. This will ensure that the correct compensation is applied on the interface level.

7. Printing and saving parameters

Saving parameters can be done by clicking on the floppy disk icon ( see below ) while being in a
parameter window. You can save either the active page or the entire menu. This will generate a rich
text file (RTF) which can be opened using Microsoft Word.

Next you will be asked where to save the file. Select the folder where you wish to save and hit Save.
Please be patient as this process can take more than a minute, especially when you save the entire
online menu, there is no progress bar while the data is collected. A green progress bar is shown at
the bottom when the file is written to disk.

Printing parameters can be done by clicking on the printer icon right next to the floppy disk icon.
You also get the option to print the current screen or all parameters.
Again this can take more then a minute while the software collects the parameters. Near the end a
green progress bar is shown after which you are presented a preview.

Page | 21
From this preview window you can select the printer using the printer icon with the question mark
and print using the regular printer icon. You can also do page setup, add a header/footer and export
to pdf from this screen.

Page | 22
8. Saving and printing echo curves

Saving and printing echo curves can be done using the floppy disk icon and print icon as shown
below. Comments can be added using the Comment tab. Clicking on the tab opens a Comment
Window in which you can type.

We recommend printing the echo curve and then exporting a pdf from the print preview window.
Saving the echo curves produces an XML file for which you will need Pactware set up to view it.
Saving as an XML file allows detailed analysis afterwards, exporting as a pdf is more suitable for a
quick evaluation.

Page | 23
From the print preview select the export button ( see below ).

You will then be asked where to save the file, select the correct folder and hit Save.

Page | 24
9. Saving an Echo curve on the transmitter.

A curve can be saved on the transmitter from the Echo Curve tab. Click on Save Ref Echo Curve as
shown below. You will be asked for a password, use 126

This curve can then be viewed and compared with other curves in the Echo History tab.
Select the curves you wish to see from the Curve 1 and Curve 2 lists.
Below an example comparing a live curve with a reference curve.

Page | 25
10. Setting up the transmitter to automatically save echo curves.

To start , select the Echo History Setup tab on the right hand side. This will open a submenu.

From the submenu select which Echo History Mode you wish to use : Events, Time or Events &
Time

When Events is selected a list of events becomes available.

Select the events on which you want the transmitter to save
an echo curve by clicking on the checkbox next to the event.

When Time is selected , enter the Start Date / Start Time and
Stop Date / Stop Time at the bottom of the screen. Also enter
the Interval at which you want an echo curve saved.

Once finished, click on Apply.

A maximum of 9 History Curves can be saved, once all slots

are taken the oldest curve is overwritten.
History curves can be shown by selecting them in the Curve
1 or Curve 2 lists as shown above.
