PERSONAL STATEMENT Roua Labbaoui, Tunisia, Engineering

“By means of water, we give life to everything.” Qur’an

Raised in a Muslim family in Tunisia these words had made a great influence on me and the
love towards nature lead me to drive my plans wisely to pursue academics in the field of
industrial biology with great passion.

After I joined the engineering cycle in my university, my perception over the course gradually
started to deepen. I met with new and practical classes in the environment field. It has
attracted and motivated me to learn more about it. I recognized that mastering the topic needs
deeper efforts. Therefore, I did two different topics as professional personal projects in my
university; the first talks about the production of bio- fuel from waste and the second studies
solid waste treatment using thermoselect. Both projects were highly admired by my
supervisors and they recommended me to extend my knowledge through practical internships.
Meanwhile, I have explored other fields through internships in several industries such as dairy
industry, oil and soap factory, cellulose and paper industry and food control laboratory.
During these internships I faced many challenges and I learnt how to excel and improve in
things which we do not have prior solid knowledge, also passion can be built by exploring
new things. Moreover, I was looking for my right direction and finally the last internship that
enlightened my path was in wastewater treatment plant where I realized my potentials can add
a value especially in this field.

With my eyes firmly set on pursuing master’s I tried for an international internship and my
tireless hard work paid me off with an international internship in India in Karunya University,
in the field of medicinal chemistry. The experience was a great deal of challenges where I
learnt how to create and hit a target in a specific time, and most importantly, how to be
tolerant and accept criticism as free gifts. I met smart people who are incredibly dedicated to
knowledge. They showed uncompromising professionalism and integrity within their work.
My works which made the panel impressive provided me with a full semester project in the
same university in the field of water treatment. So I had a second chance of coming back to
India. The research was hardly challenging but I got positive results and I gained my degree
with top honors and was awarded the best marks in the history of the university in last ten
years. I proudly consider my education trip to India as a precious opportunity. Not only I did
my graduation project, but also got a certification in Cambridge Business English (vantage
level).

I gained new skills and I improved myself too. I would say time restriction and new
challenges in the field had the biggest influence on my self-development as well as my career.
I believe they were a great motivation because they brought out the best in me and enhanced
my productivity. In addition, I got a clear mind to pursue my education in the same field for
further research in the future as I am confident in my potential and also, travelling became my
passion to meet new people, discover and learn from diverse work cultures world widely. I
was well impressed by education program within your university. I would like to pursue my
master’s degree in water treatment and waste management engineering. This degree will
enrich my knowledge in the field and it will allow me to enroll in PhD programs in the future,
where my aim to develop new techniques to solve the waste and water issues which we are
facing today. I would like to be a part of a research group in the future and work in
environmental projects. I believe my potentials are dedicated to be explored in this field. I
think I am flexible and I can cope with any work condition. I am dedicated to knowledge and
I believe in discipline to achieve plans more than motivation.
