Drive performance
despite uncertainty
The UK distribution networks are moving from their traditional
role of supplying electricity in one direction to one where they
provide a smart platform that enables technology which
generates, consumes and manages electricity in new ways.

Local networks will need to take a more active role in managing

supply and demand, and will require new services and
capabilities as part of a smarter distribution network. The ability
to lower costs, while maintaining the reliability of the network
intelligently and efficiently is essential.

KELVATEK’s solutions integrated through SAPIENT enable

distribution operators to move through a period of uncertainty
towards a smarter network, while continually pushing the
performance and efficiency of the networks to meet future
energy demands.

LV Active Networks
The most advanced LV Network Management system in the
world, comprising of WEEZAP and LYNX, enables active LV
networks that can be switched and optimised in real time.

Making networks active accelerates deployment of low carbon

technologies (LCTs) that contribute to emission targets. Our
solution is low risk, and can easily be retrofitted to existing
networks. It is a non-intrusive alternative to traditional network
reinforcement. Devices can be easily moved, or repurposed for
fault management. Investing in WEEZAP and LYNX avoids
stranded assets.

LV Substation Monitoring
Visibility of power flows at LV substations is a key component of the DSO transition. The management of LV cable health and investment is
essential to ensure continued reliability of the aging network.

Kelvatek offer solutions to measure all three phases, on all ways of existing 11 kV/400 V substations via the fuse pillar and cabinets. New
technology provides health indices to drive investment in cables. This can be used to help justify requests for investment in RIIO-ED2.

Communications, server, data store and security are all provided by SAPIENT. Analysis of data by advanced machine learning algorithms provide
insight in to the condition and future utilisation of the LV network cables.

11 kV Fault Management
Storm Response – Storms mainly affect rural overhead
networks that are typically long lines with many branches. Fault
location can involve staff ‘walking the line’ by foot. SENTINEL
provides fault location to with a few pole spans, allowing
resources to be sent directly to the affected area.

Nested faults – Storms continue to damage the network, even if

the protection has turned off the power. SENTINEL continues
to monitor the network, and provides locations of additional
‘nested’ faults.

Developing problems – Continuous monitoring can detect the

smallest of perturbations on the network, allowing early
diagnosis and repair before an unplanned outage.

Lowered lines – These cause a serious danger to staff and the

public. New technology has enabled SENTINEL to detect the
occurrence and position of lowered lines.

Transformer Diagnostics
Due to distributed generation and increased fault levels
transformers in the distribution network are being pushed
further than ever before. SAPIENT provides a comprehensive
transformer management solution.

TOTUS provides online DGA, partial discharge and bushing

monitoring. SAPIENT provides advanced expert analytics and
reporting to inform the strategy for individual unit and whole
fleet management.

Transformer life can be extended, and the effects of programs

such as oil re-generation can be monitored. Onset failures can
be detected early, to prevent unplanned outages and enables
replacement planning.

Tap Changer Monitoring

Renewable distributed generation in the network is intermittent.
Voltage fluctuations are occurring more frequently. This is
causing the duty and wear on tap changers to increase.

Inoperative tap changers constrain the network, and defective

units are a safety hazard. The ability to accurately assess them
and to detect any imminent or actual failures is critical.

KELVATEK’s range of tap changer monitoring equipment

ensures that even minor variations in performance during
operation of a tap changer is captured and flagged.

This is made possible by using advanced vibration sensor

technology in conjunction with sophisticated machine learning
algorithms that can profile a tap changer online. SAPIENT is at
the heart of our tap changer monitoring solutions.
