Sports Magazine Article

Directions: Imagine you have been hired as a fitness expert for a popular sports
magazine. For next month's issue, you have been asked to write an article about sports
safety. Your article should be at least three paragraphs long and should be written in
your own words.

You may want to refer back to the lessons and the links in the "Sprint" section. You
should include the following information in your article:

● A catchy title

● One paragraph on the importance, benefits, and methods of warming up


and cooling down

● One paragraph on the importance, benefits, and methods of cooling down

● One paragraph with other safety tips

You've heard it a million times; safety first! Well, there's a reason it's so oft
repeated. Safety really should be first in every sport. In this article we will
discuss the importance of warming up, cooling down, and some other
safety tips and tricks.
You should warm up before every athletic activity. Not warming up leaves
you more prone to injury, because warm muscles are less likely to stretch
and tear. A good warm up helps to prepare your whole body for exercise,
and leads to better calorie burning during the workout. If you're warmed up
you can exercise comfortably for longer and have better exercise. Warm
ups are easier versions of the workout you will be doing, and should
include minimal stretching. Warm Ups are usually about 5-10 minutes,
depending on the exercise intensity.
Cooling down after a workout is just as important as warming up. It helps to
keep blood pressure even, and bring the heart rate down slowly. It also
helps the muscles relax. Stretching should also be done at the end of every
workout, because muscles are more pliable and are less likely to stretch. It
is recommended that you stretch in place and don't bounce for 10-15
seconds. Hold where you feel slightly uncomfortable, if there is pain you
should take a lighter stretch.
There are other important safety tips to remember when exercising. First,
when you exercise at night wear light colors of carry a light. You should also

exercise with a buddy whenever possible, and you should never swim
without a friend. Remember to always use proper protective gear, and
follow the rules. In order to avoid cramps, stay hydrated and don't eat to
much before exercise. Follow all of the posted road signs, and stay alert
while outside. Drinking lots of water, and generally being aware are the
most importants things to do.
