Dear listeners, under this program EÒÍ¢@uõÖ® ÁÒÐÁ®, we
have classified the chapters of Tirukkural and analyzing the meaning of
the Kurals.
We learnt few chapters under Intellectual wellness and now under
mental wellness, after Aߦøhø© and AÔÄøhø© (the chapters on
love and humility), we have started to learn this chapter AÁõ AÖzuÀ.
The word AÁõ can be taken as greed, but in this context - all
types of desires are addressed. One can take the meaning, which is
appropriate for one’s way of life.
Householders, who lead the family life, can have genuine, balanced
desires. It is not wrong. But Sannyasis, who have taken up the life of
renunciation, should be totally free from desires.
Desires, that cause good to the society are not at all criticized.
But, Tiruvalluvar tells that, craving for sense pleasures at the
individual level has to be totally removed. Thus, we have to channelize
and refine our desires.
Everyone in the society wants to be happy. Majority of people,
consider, only sense pleasures as sources of happiness.
It is foolishness to take sense pleasures as supreme form of
happiness. By understanding the absolute reality alone, one gets
superior happiness. It is the duty of every individual to aim for that
greater happiness.
Being in the family life, one should enjoy sense pleasures and
fulfil one’s desires, through Dhaarmic means. Then, one has to gain
maturity of mind and get rid of desires. This is the path shown by
Tiruvalluvar.
Though this chapter is in xÓÁÓ¯À (the disciplines for
Sannyasis), let us understand this, properly.
First, Tiruvalluvar talks about the consequences of desire.
GÀ»õ E°ºUS® means, for all the Jivas living in the physical bodies,
It may any physical body - grass, worm or animal.
For all the beings living in physical bodies,
GgbõßÖ® means, always
uÁõA means that which keeps on continuing, without fail,
A¨¤Ó¨¦ The Jiva continues to take different bodies. Thus the
Jiva enters various bodies and continues to experience joys and sorrows.
DÝ® & means, that which gives, brings
Âzx - means the reason, the seed, the cause. The cause behind
this continuous journey of the Jiva, from one body to another body and
experiencing joys and sorrows.
AÁõ Gߣ The seed which causes this continous cycle of births
and deaths is known as AÁõ.
The wise men tell that, Desire alone is the cause of desire (which
makes us more and more ignorant).
Thus, wise men, who have the knowledge of absolute reality tell
that,
“There are Jivas or souls inside all the physical bodies. They also
have mind and sense organs. Through the sense organs, a contact is
being established with the external world. Due to ignorance, one wants
to enjoy happiness through sense pleasures from the external world.
Actually speaking, the real nature of the Jiva is completeness and
eternal happiness. We experience this in deep sleep state.
We can understand this, if we analyze our deep sleep state.
However much we wish, we cannot avoid sleep. All of us, have a natural
liking towards sleep.
Nature itself induces us to sleep, leaving all our external objects
and relationships. While waking up, the intelligent ones witness their
desires.
Thus, from this Kural, we learn that - only desire is the primary
cause for all beings, at all times, to be in the cycle of births and deaths
and have physical and worldly attachments.
Lord Buddha said that, “Desire is the root cause of sorrow”.
“Ignorance is the cause of desire” - this is the message of the scriptures.
Ignorance about what?
Ignorance about one’s real nature and the real nature of the world.
In this Kural, we have seen the svarupa or nature of desire.
yatra yatra kaama: tatra tatra karma, karmanaa janma.
Wherever there is desire, there is action; action leads to future
births and deaths.
Desire - action - cycle of births and deaths. This is a continuous
chain. This is the idea revealed in this Kural.
We will learn more tomorrow.
