Under the topic - ©Ú|»® (Mental Wellness) we have started
learning the meaning of the Kurals, in the chapter AÁõ AÖzuÀ.
In the first Kural, we saw that,
GÀ»õ E°ºUS® GgbõßÖ® uÁõA¨ ¤Ó¨¥Ý® Âzx, AÁõ Gߣ.
“Noble men of wisdom tell that - for all the Jivas, at any point of
time, desire is the seed for sorrowful, continuous cycle of births and
deaths”.
All our sorrows, that we face in our life, are due to our extreme
desires and attachments.
In the second Kural of this chapter, Tiruvalluvar gives a beautiful
hint for prayer.
What should we pray for, or ask for?
What one should desire for, in life?
We should desire for, freedom from rebirth, freedom from physical
and worldly attachments.
Attachment with the physical body and world, gives happiness,
that is mixed with sorrow; it gives only fake happiness.
We should pray and sincerely ask that - I should not be born again.
If we should not be born again, we should not have desires. This
is a wonderful Kural, which reveals a subtle connection.
All Kurals are significant and are rich in meaning. But few Kurals
have in-depth meaning, which touches our heart more. This is one such
Kural.

The one who has attained the knowledge of the absolute reality, if
at all he wishes something, may he ask for, freedom from rebirth. The
soul or the Jiva should not enter into another physical body again.
The word ©ØÖ in the Kural, does not have meaning, (it is a constant
word added for metrical (ö©m›PÀ) adjustment.)
Ax - That freedom from rebirth,
It can be attained by,
@Áshõø© @Ásh Á¸®.
@Áshõø© means absence of desires for sense pleasures,
@Ásh Á¸® If one asks for, and gets rid of desire for sense
pleasures, he will get freedom from rebirth.
If one needs freedom from the cycle of births and deaths, one
should first be free from desires.
The one who is totally free from desires, is free from the cycle of
births and deaths.
What is the purpose of eating food and taking care of one’s physical
body?
There are only two purposes.
1. To serve the society.
2. To gain dispassion (vairagyam) and understand the Absolute
reality.
Serving the society or paropakaaram is presented as J¨¦µÄ
AÔuÀ in Tirukkural. At the same time, one should give up all
attachments and gain knowledge of the absolute reality.
Thus, Tiruvalluvar tells that, “If at all, you wish for or pray for
anything in life - ask for the removal of desires. If desires are removed,
one will not be born again and again”.
Mundakopanishad says,
“The one who keeps on thinking about different objects, is born in
the respective worlds. But one who has understood the ultimate reality
will not be born again. All his desires will get resolved and removed, in
this birth itself.” Bh¡d gd} H$m‘m: à{dbr¶ÝVo&
Thus, let us strive for, desire for, freedom from desires.
May Tiruvalluvar’s grace ever be with us, to assimilate the teaching.
