Module 2: WORD PROBLEM INVOLVING SETS AND VENN DIAGRAMS

Introduction:

or

Venn diagram word problems generally give you two or three classifications and a bunch of numbers.
You then have to use the given information to populate the diagram and figure out the remaining
information.

Time Allotment:

Motivation 10 minutes
Lecturette 30 minutes
Application (Activity) 15 minutes
Reflection 5 minutes
Evaluation 30 minutes

Materials:

• Worksheet “Find it out”

• COLOR
• PEN AND PAPER

I. Objectives:

At the end of the session, the learners are expected to:

1. Use Venn Diagrams to solve word problems

II. Motivation: (10 minutes)

1. Answer the following questions
Grade 7 students in certain schools are interviewed. 72 students chose Instagram as their new social
network and 50 chose Facebook, while 32 chose both Instagram and Facebook, while 5 did not use
any social media platforms. Each person chose at least one of these social networks.

a. How many students are interviewed?

b. How many students like Facebook only?
c. How many students like Instagram only?
d. How many students like Facebook and Instagram?

III. Abstraction/Lecturette: (30 minutes)

Lesson: SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING VENN DIAGRAMS

Steps ins solving using Venn diagram.

1. List all the given. Using Cardinality
2. Draw the Venn Diagram and labeled each circle with the first letter of each set. The
number of circles must be equal to the number of sets in the problem.
3. Start with the Intersection of the sets. This statement used words “AND”. Write the
number inside the intersection of the 2 or more circle.
4. For the number of each circles subtract the number of the elements in the
intersection to obtain the number for the part of the circle.
5. Add all the numbers inside the sets then subtract it to the total number of elements
inside the universal set to obtain the elements outside the sets.
6. Answers the questions in the problems.

Venn Diagram Word Problems can be very easy to make mistakes on when you are a beginner.

It is extremely important to:

• Read the question carefully and note down all key information.
o OR means Union
o AND means INTERSECTION
o NOT means do not include the whole set even intersection
o ONLY means the set only without its intersection with other set
• Know the standard parts of a Venn Diagram
• Work in a step by step manner
• Check at the end that all the numbers add up correctly.

Example
1. 150 students are interviewed on subjects they are registered. 85 were registered to math , 70 where
registered to English, while 50 where registered for both math and English.

1. How many signed for math only?

2. How many signed for English only?

3. How many signed for Math or English?
4. How many signed for English and Math?
5. How many signed for neither Math or English?
Step 1. List all the given.
𝒏(𝐸 ∩ 𝑀) = 50 , 𝒏(𝐸) = 70 , 𝒏(𝑀) = 80

Step 2: Draw the Venn Diagram and Complete the numbers of elements inside it.

3. To obtain the numbers in Math
𝒏(𝑬 − 𝑴) = 𝑛(𝐸) − 𝒏(𝐸 ∩ 𝑀)
50 20
𝒏(𝑬 − 𝑴) means English only.

4. To obtain the numbers in Math
𝒏(𝑴 − 𝑬) = 𝑛(𝑀) − 𝒏(𝐸 ∩ 𝑀)
35 50 20
