Name of Student
Batch (B1/B3/B2)

ICE Group of Education, Bhopal

4th Years of Excellence with 150+ Selections 70, 2nd Floor, Zone II, MP Nagar Bhopal Contact: 0755-4910697
Section 1 Attempt any 5 questions
1. (a) Discuss various methods of application of coagulants? 5 Marks
(b) Explain Various types of water demands. 5 marks

2. (a) List out the different water borne diseases explain the effects of excess fluoride & nitrogen contents.
5 marks
(b) Define pre chlorination and post chlorination. 5 marks

3. In a retaining wall construction, A, B, C represent the shuttering operations for three bays of the wall
and P, Q, R represent corresponding concreting operations. Assume that in each case shuttering has to
precede concreting. Only one crew for form work operation and another crew for concreting operation is
available. Using dummies, show the network, representing the restraints and the consequent inter
dependencies. 10 marks

4. A project is expected to take 15 months along the critical path, hawing a standard deviation of 3 months.
What is the probability of completing the project within (a) 15 months, (b) 18 months ? 10Marks

5. A pipe carrying water tapers from cross-section 0.3m2 at A to 0.14m2 at B. The average velocity at A is 1.8
m/sec and pressure is 441 kN/m2 (gauge). If the frictional effects are negligible, determine the pressure at B
which is 5.5 m above the level of A. 10 marks

6. What are the advantages of differential surge tanks over simple and restricted orifice surge tanks?
10 marks
Section 2 Attempt any 5 questions
1. In a water treatment plant, raw water undergoes the following treatment processes viz. coagulation,
flocculation, sedimentation and filtration. A plant of capacity to treat 3 x104 m3 /d of raw water is installed
for a township. The raw water source is having a suspended solid concentration of 400ppm. Alum
Al2(SO4)314H20] is used as a primary coagulant at a dose of 45ppm. Compute the daily production of sludge
if 95% of the total suspended solids are removed by the treatment processes. Neglect aluminum hydroxide
quantity formed due to Alum dose. 20 marks

2. The BOD rate constant (k) for a river's BOD assimilation was determined to be 2.0 day-1 (base e). The BOD
of this river after leaving a heavily populated town was determine to be 50 mg/L. Determine the distance
after which the river's BOD would become 4mg/L wisest the average velocity of the river was I m/sec. What
would have been the K value of this distance would have been 300km and state what K manifests.
20 marks

3. On the basis of a detention period of 24 his, determine the size (assuming length to width ratio of around
2m and depth of waste water about 1m) of a Septic Tank required for a large house dwelling 100 persons.
The flow into the tank may be assumed at the rate of 70 l/s. What will be the surface loading and equivalent
weir loading of the tank? 20 marks

4. The quantity and strength of biological treatable wastewaters are usually related to the number of persons
that would be required to contribute an equivalent quantity of wastewater and are expressed as hydraulic
and BOD5 population equivalents respectivq1y. If a dairy processing factory produces an average of 246 m3/d
of wastewater with a BOD5 of 1400 mg/1 and assuming that per capita daily' sewage flow is 110 litre, and

that the per capita daily BOD5 contribution is 40 grams, calculate, the BOD5 equivalent population and the
hydraulic equivalent population. 20 marks

5. A coagulation treatment plant with a flow of 0.5, m 3/s is dosing alum at 23 mg/litre. No other chemicals
are being added. The taw water suspended solid concentration is 37 mg/l The effluent suspended solid
concentration is 12 mg/I. Sludge content is 1% and specific gravity of sludge is 3.01. What volume of sludge
must be disposed of every day. 20 marks

6. Fig. shows the network for a construction project, with the three time estimates of each activity marked.
Determine: (a) Critical path and its standard deviation. (b) Probability of completion of project in 40 days. (c)
Time duration that will provide 95% probability of its completion in time. 20 marks
