REFLECTIVE REPORT 2

Description

Education is the utmost significant element required in the mandate to be victorious. All

through education and constant learning, the scholar will be capable of expanding his learning

graph and improving his learning practice and experience. While not everybody similarly

experiences life, every student has some fundamental understanding that works as an existing

tool. Throughout my degree program, MIS500 Foundations of Information Systems course was

not just a learning experience but a wholesome and comprehensive cycle of knowledge and

growth of me as a person as well as a guide for my upcoming career. Such a course program

offers the information mandatory to fill the gap amid the market and business requirements. It is

significant to recognize how to bridge that gap amid these two since they are systematically

connected. This course unit did not just teach me simply about IT (Information Technology)

however instructed me how to employ our personal experiences and skills to improve the firm’s

performance.

Interpretation: Course Reflection

The course initiated with the introduction to the basic concepts of IS. I found that the

most meaningful idea arose from the lectures and learning activities on how information systems

play a role in any business enterprise, how companies apply these systems. To regulate the

academics, discipline, experts and academics cooperate in providing strategies, industrial

measures, and supervision on information systems, data management, data security, ERP

practices, ethical and legal accountability, security practice and consciousness, and furthermore.

I got started with learning about the modern business, its transformation, disruption, and

evolution in addition to agile practice. Then further down in module 1.2, I become familiar with
REFLECTIVE REPORT 3

the use of an information system within an enterprise. The first-week lecture guided me to gain

knowledge about IS within an organization. Being an aspiring graduate, I will be a part of a

company one day, so it was extremely important for me to learn about IS in the corporate

context. The company I will be joining is indeed using conventional IS and applications, so it

would be supportive for me to apply applicable concepts in my future occupation. In the lecture,

I have learned how typical such a system works in any standard business firm, e.g., an

entertainment business would have extremely innovative marketing and advertising systems, and

construction firms would invest highly in complicated operational frameworks. The learning of

some useful concepts like ERP and CRM systems would be beneficial for me in my future career

by applying them appropriately and expand my experience in the field of IS and IT. This initial

module helped me accomplish to critically examine the major concepts of IS and innovations in

present organizations and create and convey a cooperative scheme that characterizes the tenets of

an agile approach to shareholders of a firm.

I had come across case studies related to the data, knowledge management, and

information in enterprise and business that will essentially help me in expanding my knowledge

domain about business strategies within the organization. The lecture guided me to learn more

about the values of competitive strategic edge and information within the organization. From this

module, the most significant thing I learned is that data is an extremely powerful asset of an

organization. One of the lecture professor discussed in the course was about the Value Chain

Model proposed by Porter. I got information and knowledge about the use of such a model in

business for understanding the secondary and primary operations and learned that all of these

activities are dependent on each other within a firm. Alternatively this is perhaps explained by

our lecturer with peer-reviewed pieces of evidence and resources like textbook and case studies
REFLECTIVE REPORT 4

in the learning activities in each module. Initially, I felt it a bit difficult to grasp because of its

broad scope, but gradually with lectures, I fully understood the idea. Being a future marketing

aspirant, I would use and apply my knowledge of such concepts in the corporate environment to

interpret and view business operations work. Alongside I have learned about two important

enterprise information systems, namely CRM and ERP, in the course. Initially, I thought these

concepts are too broad to cover in such a short lecture; however, our experts instructed us with

basics and meaningful comprehension. Being an IT scholar, I will apply this knowledge about

these enterprise systems in my future roles in a firm in addition to applying the IS concepts and

knowledge to implement and build verifiable solutions and suggestions for my employer to

support and address their strategic objectives of an organization or a business. I believe the case

studies taught in the lecturer by our professor will serve as a data repository in fetching and

playing the role of inventory manager, sales representative, or any other. In any situation, while I

know such enterprise systems from this course, I would apply the course learning, e.g., ERP

system to help solve challenges in streamlining and handling the company’s business operations

as it expands and grows. I consider this is not just an endwise management solution; however,

likewise, a centralized repository for notes, communication, and documents for the entire

enterprise.

In this course, specifically, I had the opportunity to take note of a couple of discussions

from the professor regarding several topics associated with IS. Such discussions were

comprehensive and sophisticated concerning the subject, as the professor clarifies; he provides

few real cases in point. For instance, the professor talked over with us regarding Netflix

Corporation, where he describes their consumer’s comments and feedback as they realize a vast

relocation to another system that was the major rival to Netflix. Such a system was eBay and
REFLECTIVE REPORT 5

Stan, whereas the monthly subscription was more than the consumer prospect and their good

quality being out-of-date. I have realized the situation of the organization and the risk the

additional organization made to Netflix. It offered me knowledge concerning how digital

organizations work and forecast their consumer’s act and behavior to resolve the issue. One more

case, we have equally communicated regarding the cyber-attack on the data center and database

on Australian Bank, for example, ANZ, AMP, CBA, etc. and they fetched all the information of

the consumer. They stole all the consumers’ information and personal data, for example, BSB

number, phone numbers and account numbers, etc. that were extremely delicate to have, the

invader anticipated to misusing these details to harm to the reputation of Australian Banks and

consumers’ data. One more learning activity accomplished in the course was seeing an

informational video on YouTube that is specifically associated with the subject of IS studies. For

instance, I have seen a couple of videos as itemized below:

 The role and significance of the business executives/managers

 Business Intelligence

 Enterprise Architecture

 History of the Internet/WWW

 ERP/CRM

 Information Security and Ethics

Those YouTube videos supported me in getting the content of the course more than previously.

The professor was well-knowledgeable and experienced that he was capable of offering other

scholars and me a robust suggestion concerning any topic/subject from his personal experience

and education while required. He attempted to make all of us think beyond the scope of
REFLECTIVE REPORT 6

knowledge, and he was continuously recommending us to offer cases and examples from our

own and request for his idea and perspective that manner I was capable of acquiring additional

knowledge regarding the subject and topics that empowered me to comprehend the course

profoundly. Let us say one of the workers at the organization was having some challenging time

and situation at a workplace; he clarifies the challenge that he was bearing and what he is

experiencing among the consumers at the organization.

Outcome

This information system course offered me the mandatory skills required to turn into, not

just scholars; however, likewise, a well-informed human being who knows how to seal the gap

amid the technology and business requirement. Having experienced different lectures in this

course, I now realize that my knowledge and competency level is improved. Furthermore, I have

learned how to approach complicated contents appropriately. Additionally, I have likewise

learned regarding innovative topics in information systems all through this trimester, in addition

to human-based morals in contemporary innovation. The competencies that I got are at present,

kept in my survival kit of information and knowledge. Without a doubt, each time I participated

in class-based learning activities, I was finely prepared to manage any kind of specified

challenge. Overall, it transformed the way I wonder about IS and its disadvantages and

advantages to the enterprise and additional private industries. There is no question that

information system lectures and related learning activities were most important for me in this

course. They offered an insight into why I still seemed to function but never really had

something I wanted to do all day long. I found that the bulk of the research I spent much of my

time did not represent the ideals of hard work and self-discipline and long-term educational

ambitions. It inspired me to adjust my schedule entirely and successfully balancing my upkeep,

dedication, and personal time.
