2.1 Design
Arcing chamber The proven flat quench chambers operating in accordance with the hard-gas princi-
ple are used for L-TRI 5 switch disconnectors (Fig. 1, item 2). The arc control device
is shunted to the main circuit and each phase comprises a flat quench chamber and
an arching blade. A modified arc control system with special arcing blades is option-
ally available for switch disconnectors with an enhanced breaking capacity.
Torsion-bar spring (D) drive The D drive mechanism consists essentially of a torsion-bar spring which is ac-
mechanism commodated in a switch shaft designed as hollow shaft (20). Catches bearing the
latches (17) for the make and break operations are inserted on both sides. Further
important elements are two short solid shafts one of which is connected rigidly to
the hollow shaft and the other one is pivoted in it. The hollow shaft features a control
cam (16) to control the OFF operation of the latches. This drive lever (14) is used
to turn and thus charge the torsion-bar spring. If the notch releases the latch, the
charged torsion-bar spring turns the switch shaft suddenly, thus triggering the switch-
ing operation.

Disconnector TRI Without arc control device (flat quench chamber and arcing blade) the above-
mentioned switch disconnector types can be used as disconnectors. Thanks to the
integrated quick closing (ON) and quick opening (OFF) circuit in the drive mecha-
nism, the disconnector has the same short-circuit making capacity as the switch
disconnector.
Energy store mechanism (KS The KS drive mechanism features separate tension springs for closing and opening
drive) (21 and 22). The drive mechanism first charges the closing tension springs (22) until
these are released by a latch and quick closing is effected.
On closing, the opening tension spring (21) is charged
(= spring energy store mechanism). Opening is possible immediately after closing:
–– by manual or electrical drive mechanisms,
–– by the all-pole release mechanism in case of tripping of an H.V.H.R.C. fuse link
or
–– by an optionally attached shunt opening release.

Shorter switching shaft For use in confined spaces, the switch-disconnector LTRI-5 or an optional attach-
ment earthing switch with a shorter switching shaft is available. Regarding the vari-
ous models for the operating shaft in question, please refer to the selection list
L-TRI 5. Please, contact the manufacturer as required.
Shunt opening releases (AA) Are used for remote switching OFF of switch disconnectors with energy-storing
mechanism.
The shunt opening release AA is only designed for pulsed operation; thus, the circuit
may only be deactivated via the auxiliary switch.
Power consumption: ≤ 670 W/VA
max. ON duration for electrical tripping: 1 s
(not suitable for continuous operation. Must be deactivated via HS 3)
Blocking coil (Y1) Prevents actuation of the switching device. Only after the armature has been actu-
ated, is manual actuation enabled and the ON or OFF operations can be performed.
In case of failure of the power supply, all blocking coils are in their "locked" position.
Power consumption: approx. 12 W/VA
Auxiliary switches (HS 3) Permit direct control of releases, blocking coils and motor-operated drives.
Auxiliary switches are always actuated directly by the switch shaft via an intermedi-
ate linkage. Their position always corresponds to that of the main contacts (Circiut
diagrams, see Chapter 10.4 page 49.)
Other switching functions of the auxiliary switch can be set by adjustable cams.
The setting may only be performed by specialists who dispose of experience regard-
ing the auxiliary switches installed.

Available drive variants The following drives can be used for actuation of the switch disconnector L-TRI 5
and of an optional earthing switch:
■■ Clamping lever QW7 with extension QV1 (Fig. 37)
■■ Manual articulated drive mechanism STAD 2 (Fig. 38)
■■ Manual linkage drive mechanism STA 2 (Fig. 39)
■■ Motor-operated drive GM 3-1 (Fig. 40)
■■ on attachment earthing switch: clamping lever QW6 with extension QV1
Mounting drives Assembly of the illustrated drives, as far as specified, is described in separate manu-
als.
Warning!
Mortal danger due to high voltage!
When attaching the drives, make sure that parts of the drive link-
age do not get too close to live parts.
In case of doubt, please contact the manufacturer.
Adjusting drives Please refer to the separate manuals for the manual linkage drive STA 2 and for the
motor-operated drive GM 3-1.
The following principles apply in general for setting the drives:
D drive Switches with D drive do not require especially precise linkage settings. All that is
required is a sufficiently large operating angle, with an overtravel of approx. 5° being
admissible in each position.
KS drive A more precise setting of the drive linkage is required for KS drives to ensure correct
functioning and sufficient stability. Make sure that the drive linkage is slightly ten-
sioned in OFF position, to make sure that the latching mechanism engages. In ON
position, the drive linkage must be discharged.
Clamping lever QW7 with Optionally, the switch-disconnector can be delivered with extension QV1 (Fig. 37).
extension QV1 It is actuated by means of a commercially available operating rod (1), which is not
included in the scope of supplies.

ing of materials. Conductor bars or cable lugs using aluminium as
surface material must not be fastened to the silver-plated con-
necting surfaces of the switch disconnector.
Important:
Note for connection of the conductor bars or cables:
●● Conductor bars must be dimensioned sufficiently according to the
specifications for rated and short-circuit current. National regula-
tions must be observed.
●● In case of short-circuit current, make sure that the switch discon-
nector pole is not exposed to higher electrodynamic forces. The
connecting bars must be provided with sufficient support in the
vicinity of the switch disconnector connectors.
●● The conductor bars / cable lugs must be positioned flat and so as
to cover the holes. When tightening the connection bolts, make
sure the switch connecting elements are not turned. Make sure to
use a second wrench to block the bolts.
●● Coat contact surfaces and comply with specified tightening tor-
ques (see Chapter 10.2 as of page 47).

Danger!
Mortal danger due to high voltage. The high-voltage supply must
not be connected. All active parts must be earthed.
Important:
For switching operations, comply with Chapter Function and Operation
as of page 40.
In case of failure of the power supply, the blocking coils (optional) are
in "locked" position; thus, manual switching operations are blocked.

Fig. 50 Fig. 51
The arc is quenched by the gas thus Final situation:
produced in the flat quench chamber. Switch-disconnector OFF
If the switch disconnector is switched OFF, the contact blades are separated first
(Fig. 48, 1). The arcing blades (2) are still in contact, so that current is now flowing
via the arcing blades. Once the switching blades have covered the isolating dis-
tance, the arcing blades also jump out of contact (Fig. 49). The break arc (3) burns in
the narrow gap of the flat quench chamber. In this process, sufficient gas is released
to quench the arc quickly and efficiently (Fig. 50).
Mechanical interlocks If an earthing switch is attached, a locking rod (see page 27) between the actuating
shafts of switch disconnector and earthing switch prevents the earthing switch from
being switched ON while the switch disconnector is ON, and vice versa. Conse-
quently, either the switch disconnector or the earthing switch can be ON at the same
time.
Blocking coil The manual controls on the switch disconnector and earthing switch can be locked
optionally by blocking coils. Electromagnetic blocking coils can be used for inter-
panel as well as intra-panel interlocks:
■■ an optional blocking coil for the switch disconnector can lock the switching
device L-TRI 5 in ON/OFF position.
■■ an optional blocking coil for the earthing switch can lock the switching device
L-TRI 5 in ON/OFF position.
Important:
In case of failure of the supply voltage, all electrical interlocks are in
their "locked" position.
Measure: Re-establish power supply.
Important:
●● When operating the switch disconnector / earthing switch, comply
with the instructions for the switchgear panel used, or the attached
drives.
●● After each switching operation for which you have used an actuat-
ing lever/a crank, remove this lever/crank.
●● Comply with the switch-specific mechanical and electromechani-
cal interlocking conditions; see also Chapter 8.2.
Inspection It is recommended to check the switch disconnectors visually on a regular basis and
according to the applicable national regulations, depending on the strain to which
they are subject. A visual inspection includes a complete check of the switch discon-
nector for contamination, condensation and damage, to be performed by certified
staff.
Important:
In case of frequent condensation or air pollution (dust, smoke or cor-
rosive gases), the maintenance intervals must be adapted to the actual
conditions.
Maintenance If there are signs of impurities or condensation, the switch disconnectors must be
cleaned in an expert fashion (see Chapter 9.3 and 9.4, page 44) and subsequently
checked for proper functioning (see Chapter 7.2 as of page 37).
Contact surfaces In case of load imposed by short-circuit currents, the contact surfaces must be
checked and, if necessary, re-greased; refer to Chapter 9.8 page 46 "Lubrication
instructions".
The following tables contain the admissible numbers of make and break operations
of each variant of the switch disconnector. The data indicate when inspection is
required. For inspection, please contact the manufacturer.

Slight contamination Clean using a dry, lint-free cloth. Depending on the degree of soiling, replace cloth
as often as necessary.
Severe soiling Use cleaning agent, 1 litre can (see Chapter 10.1, page 47).
The use of other cleaning agents is not admissible.
■■ Wear protective gloves
■■ Use cleaning agents according to manufacturer's instructions
■■ Soak the cloth thoroughly and wipe the insulating components. Keep duration
of exposure as short as possible.
■■ Expose the cleaned surface to the air for at least two hours.
When cleaning, make sure that the lubrication in the drive mechanisms is not re-
moved. If the drive mechanisms are no longer sufficiently lubricated, new lubrication
must be applied (see section 9.8).
Measures in case of ■■ If there are signs of condensation: clean switching device (see Chapter 9.3).
condensation ■■ Check heating system or install a heating. It must provide a sufficient heating
performance to prevent condensation on the switch disconnector.
■■ Condensation can also be prevented by ensuring suitable ventilation and heat-
ing of the station or by using de-humidification devices.
Warning!
If excessive forces are used for inserting/replacing H.V.H.R.C.
fuses, the switching device and especially the post insulators can
be damaged.
Important:
Always exchange the three fuses, even if only one fuse has tripped.
