What is a project? • Temporary – Definite beginning and definite end – End is reached when: • Project objectives are achieved • It’s clear that project objectives cannot be met • Need for project no longer exists – Temporary in no way means short. • A project can be from a few days to as much as 50 years long 10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 21 • Unique –Has not been done before –Even if projects are identical • (identical Office Buildings: • Different: owner, location, design, budget, suppliers…etc)

Why is this important? • Too many resources. • Strict budget. • Time limit. • Contractual penalties, serious consequences. • Quality. • Safety. • Knowledge. • Risk • ……

Examples of projects • Developing a new product or service • Designing a new transportation vehicle • Developing or acquiring a new or modified information system • Constructing a building or facility • Building a water system for a community • Running a campaign for political office

Areas of Project Management • According to the PMBOK, ten areas of knowledge are identified: ▫ Project Scope Management ▫ Project Time Management ▫ Project Cost Management ▫ Project Quality Management ▫ Project Human Resource Management ▫ Project Communication Management ▫ Project Risk Management ▫ Project Procurement Management ▫ Project Stakeholders Management ▫ Project Integration Management 10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 26 10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 27 Construction Industry in Egypt • Industry contributes around 7% of the country’s GDP • Employs approximately 10% of the country’s workforce • Many companies are now exporting their construction services abroad.

Major Types of Construction Projects • Residential Housing Projects. • Institutional and Commercial Building Projects. • Industrial Construction Projects. • Infrastructure and Heavy Construction Projects.
10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 29
Residential Housing Projects • The residential housing market is heavily affected by general economic conditions and policies of the government. • Often, a slight increase in total demand will cause a substantial investment in construction. • The required engineering expertise is usually not very sophisticated. • Because of the relative ease of entry, at least at the lower end of the market, many new builders are attracted to the residential housing construction. • This market is highly competitive, with potentially high risks as well as high rewards.
10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 30
Infrastructure and Heavy Construction • These projects include highways, mass transit systems, tunnels, bridges, pipelines, drainage systems, and sewage treatment plants.
10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 31
Infrastructure and Heavy Construction • Most of these projects are publicly owned. • This category of construction is characterized by a high degree of mechanization (use of massive equipment). • The engineers and contractors engaged in infrastructure projects are usually highly specialized since each segment of the market requires different types of skills. 10/8/2018 Dr. Mona Abouhamad 32
