Subject: Facilitating Learner Centered Teaching

Name: LESLIE D. ABALORIO

Instructor: Mr. Eddie Manzano

1. What is the importance of engaging prior knowledge in instruction?

Answer: The importance of engaging prior knowledge in instruction is to make learners learn
well, relate, understand and comprehend the lesson deeply and for long term learning.
Engaging prior knowledge in instruction will make learners construct their knowledge because
when the teacher present learners new problem, or new information, their prior knowledge and
experience will be able to influence their thinking. New learning of learners are constructed in
thier prior knowledge that is why the information that is not connected with a learner's prior
experiences will be quickly forgotten. So the more the learners engage their prior
understandings the more likely they are to learn well and the less likely they are to misinterpret
the material in teachers cources.

2. Engaging students in activating prior knowledge requires different techniques. Base in

the article you have read summarize the resources or technique to have a student-active
pedagogy.

Answer: There are different requirements in order to engage learners prior knowledge in the
class. First the teacher should begin a course or unit with a benchmark lesson whereby
teachers present provocative question that doesnt have a clear answer in order to get the
students range of thinking. Second is at the end of the class session, teache should ask the
learners to write what they already know about the topic in order for the teacher to understand
what learners already know. Third at the start of the topic teacher should have learners work in
a small group to fill to fill in a chart with 3 columns- what they know, what they think they know,
and what they need to find out in order to measure learners capacity of knowledege. Fourth the
teacher should use discrepant event, let the learner experience an event that is contrary on
what would expected to motivate their desire to understand what happened and why and the
last one teachers should conduct assesment technique like classroom assesment technique
before the introduction of the topic to test their prior knwledge.

3. Discuss how teacher facilitates transfer of learning in a learner centered classroom.

Answer: The learner-centered classroom focuses on encouraging active participation from

students. One way a teacher can facilitate learning is to carefully design their courses and
detailed lesson planning , use different teaching strategies and approaches that will suit to the
lesson so that students will have lots of opportunities to practice the cognitive skills necessary to
meet the outcomes of the subject. Teachers serves as facilitator who doesnt operate the
traditional way of teaching that aditional concept of teaching, but rather is meant to guide and
assist students in learning for themselves - picking apart ideas, forming their own thoughts
about them, and owning material through self-exploration and dialogue.
