Student Name: Chlomoudis Giagkos Ion

Student Number: 11881
Course: Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design Level 5
Assignment NO: 2

Marking Criteria:
We expect the learners to write minimum one well expressed point in three lines against each
allocated mark. This means one needs to write 15 lines with 5 well expressed points to get high
grades for a 5 marks question.

For high grades use examples and illustrations where appropriate.

1. Give short answers for the following questions:

i. What is meant by the term, ‘weight and hand’ in the textile industry?

“Weight and hand” is one of the fiber characteristics, along with the texture and the performance
of the fiber. “Weight and hand” determine the silhouette of a garment. They depend on the
thickness of the fabric and its fall. This is important because the silhouette of a garment depends
on the fall of the fabric.
Fabric hand is the quality of the fabric assessed by the reaction obtained from your sense of
touch. It's a person's estimation when feeling fabrics between your fingers and thumb.
Determining fabric hand is a combination of physical, physiological, and psychological factors. The
physical factor is the fabric.
Fabric weight is the outcome of how a fabric has been woven, its finish and sometimes the fiber
type. Certain principles are followed regarding fabric weight. For instance, the weight of fabrics
used for upper garments is usually less than the weight of fabrics used for lower ones.

[information gathered also from the book of Khurana Pooja: “Introduction to fashion technology”.

ii. Name the warm colors. How are these used best in dress designing?

Colours that are considered warm are be red, yellow and orange. They are associated with fire,
the sun etc.
Red is used a lot in Valentine’s themes, romance and love. It is used for every season and used
frequently in sporting clothes and evening wear.
Yellow represent cheerfulness, brightness, sunniness and friendly feelings. Yellow is not matching
well with many skin tones and therefore it is a difficult color to wear for many people.
Orange combines the warmth of red and the sunniness of yellow but can also be difficult to wear.
Soft peach or apricot shades of orange are softer shades, while intense orange can be
overpowering and therefore irritating to the eye. Orange is also a good color for active wear.
iii. Why is it important for a designer to consider the scale of a pattern, when using patterned
fabrics in dress designing?

The scale of a pattern can complement the design, but it can also overpower or underplay it. For
example, a rather large print would overshadow the actual design. In order to display a larger
print to its best advantage, it should be the most important element of a garment and not be
broken up with details or seams. The structure should remain simple. When a design begins to
form with dominating lines or details, it is best to keep the fabric plain and of secondary
importance.
The pattern may be an important part of how a design looks. It is important for the scale of the
pattern to match the person’s scale.

iv. What is the difference between conventional design and geometric design?

Conventional Design is choosing something from nature and adopting it to suit the purpose of the
object. Then it becomes decorative and the motif is no longer naturalistic. On the other hand,
Geometric Designs are not taken from nature but are instead derived from shapes (circles,
rectangles, triangles, parallel lines etc.).

2. Define the term ‘colour dimension.’ Explain the following terms: Hue, value, and intensity

The perception of color is often described by referring to three dimensions of the color
experiences: hue, value and intensity.
The color hues help us tell one color from another (red from yellow, green from
Blue etc.).
Value denotes the use of lights and darks, meaning the variation of strength in colors. The scale of
color value moves from white to black (white being pure light and black
being the absence of it). Lighter values are called tints and darker values are referred to as shades.
Intensity refers to the brightness or strength of a color or the weakness (paleness) of a color.
High-intensity colors being the brighter ones and low-intensity colors being the paler ones.

3. Write a short note on the following; Basic shapes in dress designing

Rectangle: long, straight, and hanging in loose, graceful folds, such as in Greek and Roman styles.
It will have straight line sheaths and could be for tailored suits.
Triangle: fitted bodice and a bell shaped, gently widening skirt.
Inverted Triangle: wide shoulders and a narrow skirt with dolman or raglan sleeves.
Oval: draped over a figure and softly shaped. It is a very feminine and decorative form. This style
is suitable for afternoon and evening wear.
Square: straight or boat-shaped necklines, or boxy jackets, or capes. It can camouflage certain
figure irregularities when the proportions are well planned and designed well.
Round: wide skirts, petal shapes and puffy sleeves. This style is suitable for formal wear or
afternoon frocks. It suits best the very young and/or the very thin figured.
Hourglass: wide shoulders and either a natural or ‘wasp’ waist which comes in. It fits smoothly
over the hips and usually has a full skirt. This is a good design for the tall, thin figure.
Combinations include using the outline of any of the current fashion silhouettes which can be
modified and combined with another.
Project
Look through costume books for pictures of a historic dress. Using these inspirations, design a
garment using the lines, shapes, colors, and details from the historic garment in a new
combination for our modern lifestyle.
