Chick-Flick of The Summer

Back in 2018 a movie titled To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before was released on Netflix.

The movie is based off of a novel with the same title written by author Jenny Han. Based off the

title and the cover the movie might not attract a wide variety of viewers but one thing you never

do is judge a book by its cover.

Lara Jean Covey is a junior in high school with two sisters. A little sister she calls Kitty

and older sister named Margot. The story starts out with her sister Margot leaving for college and

breaking up with her boyfriend who was Lara Jean’s best friend since they were kids. A little

back story about Lara Jean, she has never had a boyfriend throughout her 16 years of life. When

she was younger, she would write letters to the boys she felt intense passion for but never sent

them. A total of five letters she has written since she was freshman and her latest being to her

sister’s ex-boyfriend Josh.

One night while hanging out with Kitty, Lara Jean fell asleep and gave Kitty the perfect

opportunity to snoop through her room. Kitty being the baby of the family she saw how Lara

Jean was when her sister Margot had a boyfriend. While snooping through her room Kitty found

all of Lara Jean’s love letters in a box in her closet and took it upon herself to mail them out. The

following school day during gym class Lara Jean was confronted by her former crush, the most

popular guy in school, Peter Kavinsky. Peter reveals his letter he received from Lara Jean and

she faints on the track before he could even get a word out. Soon peter gets her to wake up and
begins to tell her how he feels when she notices Josh from a distance holding his letter from her

in his hand. Not knowing what to do she quickly grabs peter and kisses him in hopes of Josh

seeing so she wouldn’t have to face him. Without spoiling the whole movie long story short,

Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky make a pact to be in a fake relationship so josh wouldn’t know she

had a crush on him and so Peter’s ex Gen jealous.

This being a Netflix original I didn’t have high hopes for this movie. My experience with

Netflix originals hasn’t been good. They tend to have poor acting with a story line that is hard to

follow. I was first introduced to this movie by a friend that swore this movie was worth the

watch. At this time Netflix originals were partly new. Seeing it all over Netflix for months I

couldn’t bring myself to watch what looked like a corny high school movie a teenage girl would

watch and fantasize about a love story like the one in the movie. Summer 2019 rolls around and

I’m looking for something new and interesting. Out of complete boredom I finally pick up the

nerve to watch To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. Not really looking forward to how I was

going to spend the next hour and half of my life I begin to get interested in the movie. The

opening scene started with Lara jean in the field of desire talking about a forbidden kiss with her

sister’s boyfriend in the distance. At this point I had zero hopes this was going to be a good

movie.

My eyes being glued to the screen the movie comes to end with a kiss between the two

main characters. For having such low hopes, I give this movie and ten out of ten, a five out of

five stars, the highest rating possible. Not only were the actors deep into character but the story

line was one any girl would fall in love with. In honest opinion this movie is definitely a chick-

flick. A movie where girls would have to force their boyfriends to watch with them or even

watch alone while stuffing their face with popcorn. It is definitely not meant for all ages but I
know for a fact majority of teenage girls will love this movie. Even though it was released in

August of 2018, the movie stayed on Top Picks on Netflix all throughout summer 2019. In

February of this year Netflix released a sequel to this movie called To All The Boys: P.S. I Still

Love You and rumors have it that a third movie is on its way.
Reflection

Throughout the semester, sequence two by far has been the easiest and the most

interesting. This sequence allowed us as students to be creative with our work. We’re always

being told to write essays in MLA form and don’t really have leeway with the topics we choose

but, in this sequence, we had full control over our topics.

In Short Writing Assignment 3 (SWA3) we were asked to write a review on a show or

movie. The medium obviously was a review but we were allowed to choose our own topic and

show or movie for the review. For this assignment I was actually really excited to complete it.

For this assignment I used SLO A Rhetorical Situation and Genre. It gave me the necessary tools

to compose this piece in a way for my audience to understand what I was saying and where I was

coming from. I’ve never been one to believe I’m a good writer. I definitely have my moments,

but I only tend to do really good on the pieces I actually enjoy writing. Being able to choose my

own topic allows me to be creative in my own way.

SLO E, Grammar and Usage was presented in my Major Writing Assignment 2 through

the context of my review. SWA 3 and 4 helped me compose this assignment by being able to

write one review on a show and an opposing review on another show. Both being shows I was

able to choose. At the beginning of the semester I didn’t believe in my writing abilities but after

sequence 2 I have confidence in my writing I have never had before.
