FILM ANALYSIS

“INSIDE OUT”

The movie was released last June 17, 2015 and was written by Pete Docter and Ronnie Del
Carmen. Five years ago, the writer and director Pete Docter of Pixar reached out to the scientists who
have studied about emotions to talk over an idea for a film, one that would portray how emotions work
inside a person’s head and at the same time shape a person’s outer life with other people. He wanted to
do this all in the mind of an 11-year-old girl as she navigated a few difficult days in her life. Mr. Docter
and his team were generally about the science related to questions at the heart of the film: How do
emotions govern the stream of consciousness? How do emotions color our memories of the past? What
is the emotional life of an 11-year-old girl like? Studies find that the experience of positive emotions
begins to drop precipitously in frequency and intensity at that age.

Inside out is about Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) who is a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old Midwestern
girl, but her world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley's emotions
-- led by Joy (Amy Poehler) -- try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the
stress of the move brings Sadness (Phyllis Smith) to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are
inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are
Anger, Fear and Disgust.

At first, I was a bit hesitant upon hearing the title of the film I was about to watch. I knew that
this is an animated film, but I have no idea about the movie’s concept. I just knew that this is connected
to emotions.

When the movie started, I was amused at how the film went by starting on the introduction of a
girl named Riley and the emotions inside of her.

As the movie went by, I don’t really know what to expect. I have no idea how will the plot work,
or if there will be progress in the story aside from the emotions she feel. But, when the plot slowly
unfolds, I was shocked at how the story went by. The concept of the whole film was very good. The
cinematography was superb and the casts’ voices are very appropriate to the character they portray.

Personally, I love this movie because of the flow of the story. I have to admit that I am not a fan
of animated movies, but I seriously love this one.

This film gave me a good impression about human’s emotions. It showed that people cannot live
with one emotion alone, especially with none. The movie portrayed that emotions are vital in our life.

Overall, the movie is very good, and I can highly recommend this to my friends.
The film is good for those people who suffer emotional disturbances and for those who try to figure out
why they feel such things. This movie shows how we live with our emotions and that everyone is unique
having their own personalities.

This movie illustrates how our emotions work and how are they applied into memories. This also
demonstrated that our emotions don’t work all alone. They are coordinated with our memories and
experiences.

It showed me a new perspective about how emotions work inside of us, and how they gave meaning to
our lives.

This movie could also serve as an awakening for those people who are emotionally confused, for
they are not alone in their struggle. Many people are also suffering emotional problems, too.

After watching this movie, I realized that our emotions are very important to our lives. They give
color and brightness into our experiences and memories.

I learned that we could only have one emotion in an experience, but it could be better if the
emotions are balanced.

I knew that different persons have different personalities and different ways to cope up with
emotions.

I also discovered that our personalities develop over time. Sometimes, most are destroyed and
forgotten, but new personalities emerged that made us a better version of ourselves.

Overall, I learned that everyone is different, that our emotions and personality represent who
we are and who we are going to be.

Inside Out is about the emotions that give each and every one of us our life and personality. Joy,
Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Sadness all work together inside the head of a little girl named Riley. When
Riley’s family moves across country, Joy has to learn that not everything has to be joyful 100 percent of
the time. That it’s okay to be sad and As we get older, just as in life, our emotions begin to be a mix of
different things. Moments of joy that make us cry, or being mad at how scared you got. Or even
depression.

The filmmaker was successful in his purpose. “Inside Out” offers a new approach to sadness. Its
central insight: Embrace sadness, let it unfold; engage patiently with a preteen’s emotional struggles.
Sadness will clarify what has been lost (childhood) and move the family toward what is to be gained: the
foundations of new identities, for children and parents alike.
“A BEAUTIFUL MIND”

A Beautiful Mind is a 2001 American biographical drama film based on the life of the American
mathematician John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics and Abel Prize winner. The film was directed
by Ron Howard, from a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer
Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The film stars Russell Crowe, along with
Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Judd Hirsch, Josh Lucas, Anthony Rapp, and
Christopher Plummer in supporting roles. The story begins in Nash's days as a graduate student at
Princeton University. Early in the film, Nash begins to develop paranoid schizophrenia and endures
delusional episodes while watching the burden his condition brings on wife Alicia and friends.

What I like best about the movie is that the pain is so beautifully portrayed by all actors it's
almost painful to watch his suffering. But the single fact that a Human being's mind is so powerful when
used for all the right things is mesmerizing. This movie shows both the extremes of our mind. And the
fact that this is a true story is all the more inspiring to me.

The start might be a bit boring but once it picks up pace its splendid. The performance of
Russell Crowe as well as Jennifer is commendable. Schizophrenia is a very dangerous disease and the
way they fought with it was outstanding. The story not only accurately portrays the crippling,
unpredictable effects of the disorder on John’s ability to process information, socially interact and
distinguish between fantasy and reality, but more importantly celebrates his success in leading a
productive life as he learns to manage his condition through various treatments and the support of
others.

As the movie progresses, John’s behavior becomes increasingly consistent with the medical
definition of schizophrenia. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth
Edition, schizophrenia symptoms generally include auditory or visual hallucinations, disorganized
speech, thoughts, and behavior, inappropriate and lack of emotional responses, and paranoia. By
analyzing important scenes from the movie, we are able to associate schizophrenia, and more
specifically paranoid schizophrenia, with John’s progressively deteriorating mental state. For example, at
the start of the movie, John unintentionally offends his fellow graduate students by first mocking the
pattern of a tie worn by Neilson and then goes on to label Martin’s work as unoriginal, before finally
claiming to come up with his own entirely original research. His initial display of arrogance and aloofness
clearly characterizes him as someone that lacks the interpersonal ability to get along with people and
recognize inconsiderate behaviors during formal settings. Furthermore, John also experiences
hallucinations as revealed by his “interactions” with imaginary characters.

While the movie overall does accurately portray the experience of someone living with paranoid
schizophrenia, it does not mention the lack of confirmed causes for the mental disorder. However, these
possible causes aren’t necessarily explored in the movie; what is explored, though, is the best course of
treatment available at the time. John was given insulin shock therapy when he was admitted to the
mental hospital, which was at the time a newly developed treatment to cure schizophrenia. As proven
by the movie, antipsychotic medications prescribed by Dr.Rosen effectively reduced John’s disturbing
thoughts, hallucinations, and delusions that made it hard for him to cooperate with other people in the
first place; as a result, both family and colleague support became much more effective in helping John
not only to stay in touch with reality but ultimately to regain control of his life and continue his work at
Princeton University. Therefore, even though the support of others will be a good supplementary
treatment, medication is clearly the cornerstone of schizophrenia treatment that makes other
treatments effective in the first place.

The filmmaker was successful in portraying his purpose and precisely describes the complexities
of the mental disorder. However, one thing is at least for certain: that uninterrupted medication
treatment, combined with therapy and family support, will help patients live their best lives possible.
