II. a. Describe the various types of strain rosettes. Discuss Murphy’s construction. (8)
b. The stress state at a point is given by the three principal stresses 100,120, 200 N/mm2.

III. The general displacement field in a body in Cartesian coordinate is given by
u = 0.015 x2y + 0.03
v = 0.005 y2 + 0.03 xz
w = 0.003 z2 + 0.001 yz + 0.005
Find the rectangular strain components at the point (1, 0, 2). Also find the direction of
smallest principal strain. (15)
IV. Determine the maximum tensile and maximum compressive stresses across the Sec. AA

V. A flat steel disk of 700mm outside diameter and 100 mm inside diameter rotates at
2500rpm. The disk and shrouding cause a tensile rim loading of 4.5 x 10 3N/m2. The
maximum stress at this speed is to be 11.5 x 10 3N/m2. Find the maximum shrinkage
allowance on the diameter when the disk is rotating. (15)

VI. The state of stress at a point is given by stresses σx= 120MPa, σy= 55MPa, σz =
-85MPa, τxy = -55MPa, τyz = 33MPa and τxz = -75MPa. Determine the three principal
stresses and the directions associated with them. (15)

OR
VII. Determine A cantilever is supported at the free end by an elastic spring of spring
constant k. Determine the reaction at A. The cantilever beam is uniformly loaded. The
intensity of loading is W. Calculate the reaction at free end if k = 200 N/mm and W =
2000 N. (15)

VIII. Determine the shear stress distribution in a channel section of a cantilever beam
subjected to a load F, as shown. Also, locate the shear centre of the section. (15)

IX. a. Derive an expression for stress acting on a bar of elliptical cross section. Also find the
maximum stress, angle of twist and torsional rigidity. (10)
b. Explain briefly, why closed sections are having better torsional rigidity than open
sections. (5)
