Task A4 | D

 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background
research.  research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

→ F
abric consists of soft and fine materials through joining them together like knitting,
weaving, and crotchet.
→T extiles are produced from textile fiber that was woven and processed. Textiles can
become other products through spinning and weaving.
→G arments are pieces of clothing that are produced by using fabric or textiles for
fashion and decorating purposes.
→F ast fashion is clothes that were disposed of due to a trend that has passed or
finished. Fast fashion allows consumers to shop for clothes at a cheaper price.

MANUFACTURING  By consulting sources about manufacturing cotton, I have found out:

→ Step 1: The cotton that was harvested by pickers gets stored into modules that
help them become prepared for ginning.
→ Step 2: The cotton from the module will now enter the gin and it sends cotton fibers
to the cleaning equipment.
→ Step 3: After the cotton has been ginned, they will be stored into bales which will
transport them to factories.
→ Step 4: In the factory, the cotton will be sucked into thick sheets.
→ Step 5: The sheets will be straightened and will form into long ropes.
→ Step 6: the ropes will become into yarn through the process of stretching and
twisting.
→ Step 7: the yarn will be sent into the circular knitting machine that makes it into the
fabric.

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
TOOLS FOR MAKING  designing and creating my product:
TECHNIQUES FOR MAKING MY PRODUCT:
→ running stitch
→ overstitch
→ blanket stitch
→ french knot
T
 OOLS FOR MAKING MY PRODUCT:
→ thread (polyester and cotton and waxed)
→ Eyelets
→ Studs
→ rivets
→ Snap Fasteners
→ Velcro (sew-on and stick on)
→ Anything you request that is approved by the teacher.
→ Fabric glue
→ Contact adhesive ( Elmer’s multi-purpose spray adhesive )
→ Sewing machine ( Brother JA1450NT )
→ Needles
→ Seam ripper
→ Fabric shears
→ Rotary cutter
→ Hole punch
→ Rivet/eyelet setter and die

CLIENT INFORMATION  By consulting sources such as, I have realized the following considerations should be
taken into account when designing and creating my product:
→ The age and gender of the client are important when creating and designing a
product that would be appropriate for them. My client’s age is 12 and she is female.
→ It is also important to know the client’s preferences. My client’s preference for colors
are bright and pastel colors.
→ Another consideration that should be taken into account when making my product is
my client’s interests. My client likes webtoons and pop music.
→ When creating and designing my product, I also need to know my client’s hobbies.
My client likes to draw and listen to music often.

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
→ Running stitch: A running stitch is a basic stitch that is made through passing the
needle in and out.
→B ack Stitch: A backstitch is a stitch that looks like they are overlapping. Doing a
backstitch is when you insert the needle back into the end of the stitch you have made.
Then you pull the needle out and repeat the same thing.
→ Over Stitch: An overstitch is a stitch used to connect or sew two pieces of fabric
together. Doing an overstitch is when you get your thread to come underneath and it
connects the fabrics together.
→S titching buttons: Stitching a button is used to attach the button securely and neatly
on the garment or clothing.
The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
→ Using the overstitch method will be helpful in making my drawstring bag. Since the
overstitch is used to connect fabric together, I can use it for creating the structure of
my bag.
→ Using the stitch for buttons can also help with my design. Since I will be using
patches and pin attachments, this method can be helpful for my bag design
The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
→ One of the skills that I will need to practice is the o verstitch. From my first attempt
for this stitching method, I was not fully satisfied with the result. My stitches were a bit
messy so I want to improve on this skill to successfully apply it to my design.
→ Another skill that I can be able to improve on is how I can create a neat french knot.
Since it’s my first time trying and attempt on doing a french knot, it came out to be a
messy and weird-looking knot.

A2: Research Document

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose   In this project, I will create a drawstring bag.

The purpose of my product is to be able to carry a variety of things that can help the
client.

Design Goal  My product will address the design problem of -textiles being quickly sent to landfills-
by extending my garment’s life. Turning my garment into a bag can help solve the
problem of textile landfills.

Intended   My product is intended to be used by females or anyone within the range of 12 years
Target audience  old.

Target audience representative  I would describe my client as a 12-year-old female who likes bright colors, loves to
listen to pop music, likes reading webtoons and likes to wear casual clothes.

Their needs and wants for the product is a design that has patches and is made up of
strong material that can be able to hold a big capacity for a bag.
