In my picture, I see the Punakawan character wayang of Semar. In the picture, I am able to see
red and black stripes diagonally crossing for the background. Then, negative phrases can be
seen in the wayang’s body. A white and gigantic amount of scribbles are later portrayed in
Smear’s head.

In this, I see the elements of line and color, as the lines are the diagonal lines in the background
while the color is mainly the color of red, black and white, to display distress. There is a lot of
space and shape that can be seen in the drawing. The space that can be seen separated in the
wayang’s body between the scribble and background and the lack of objects all around him and
the shape is just the shape of the wayang to be very complicated. In this artwork, I can also see
emphasis and variety in the artwork as the emphasis can be seen on the wayang, as the red
and black lines, has the wayang which uses white to show a deep contrast and to attract
attention from the audience as I plan the wayang and the words to be the first thing that my
audience sees.

I didn’t use that much special techniques as this is all just a last minute drawing that I pulled up.
The process of making this was really simple because during the coronavirus, I think of despair
and honestly, I think that Semar would be feeling that too if he were to be quarantined inside of
his home. My main inspiration was Heri Dono’s artworks as he likes using the ideas of bringing
tradition and adding them with a modern twist (see Ceremony Of Superheros by Heri Dono for
example).
When I see the artwork, I realize that everything around me, especially if seeing this at home,
quite feels a little bit of despair and hopelessness. I feel that I’m also not alone as it is normal to
feel bored and despaired during this quarantine especially when one did not have any social
interaction with human beings for a very long time. The rules and looking at the news channel
every day also causes despair and hopelessness as we just lost and gave up hope to the point
that we don’t even care when this pandemic ends.

The title is ‘Indonesia in Despair’ as when I made this, I want to express my feelings as I’m
saying that the country that I’m living in as of now aren;t doing so well now, hence the name
despair. I also would like to tell people that they are not alone when they feel hopeless and
scared at times like these.

I feel like the artwork is successful because it managed to live up to my expectations as it

delivers my message quite well and I feel like it is very artistic. One way to make the artwork
better is to probably make the lines more clean and probably put more shading and make it
actually look acrylic.
