MALABON: IT’S ORIGIN

A. LEGEND OF MALABON

 named “Tambobong” more than 400 years ago.


 one of the tribal domain of Rajah Soliman, cousin of Rajah Matanda of nearby
Manila area.
 Etimology – “Tambobong” originated from the numerous tambo trees growing in the
area; the abundant tender and edible shoots of the bamboo: “labong”, which was
one of the original ingredients of Malabon’s signature dish: thePancit “Malabon”.
 Malabon – “mala” because of the mud that dirtied and ruined their expensive
leather shoes and exquisite, long robes imported from Europe; and it was
“bon/buen” for its restorative, fresh air and excellent cuisine.

B. THE TAMBOBONG

 May 21, 1599- Tambobong and was founded by the Augustinian friars as a
“Visita” or parish of Tondo along with the town of Navotas.
 18th and 19th century - Tambobong benefited from its robust economic activities
due to its proximity to the Walled City of Intramuros and the Galleon Trade in the
Manila Bay Area.
 1768 - “Casa Regal de Tambobong”, a tribunal building was established indicating
the town’s voice in legal and political affairs of the times.
 1851 - further industrialization was manifested by the establishment in Hulo of a
huge tobacco factory called “La Princesa” owned by the King of Spain.
 1888 - highlighted by the first Trambia de Bapor that plied Malabon’s River system
which was an efficient entry to the northern provinces.

C. MALABON AS PART OF RIZAL

 June 11, 1901 – under Philippine Commission Act No. 137 Malabon was officially
made a municipality under the then newly-created province of Rizal.
 January 16, 1906 – under Act No. 1441separated Malabon from Navotas into two
distinct municipalities of Rizal province
 For 70 years, Malabon was municipality of Rizal, until November 7, 1975 when
Malabon became a part of Metropolitan Manila or NCR.

D. MALABON THROUGH R.A.

 Philippine Commission Act No. 137 - Malabon was officially made a municipality
under the then newly-created province of Rizal.
 Philippine Commission Act No. 942 – Malabonreunited with the town of Navotas.
 Act No. 1441 - separated Malabon from Navotas into two distinct municipalities of
Rizal province.
 Presidential Decree No. 824 - Malabon became part of Metro Manila on
November 7, 1975.
 House Bill No. 8868 - “An Act Converting the Municipality of Malabon into a Highly
Urbanized City to be known as the City of Malabon” was approved on its Third
Reading by the House of Representatives on December 8, 1999
 Republic Act no. 9019 – Malabon became a city on April 21, 2001, 407 years after
its founding.

E. PEOPLE BEHIND THE MAKING OF MALABON


The town was created according to the following people:

 CAVADA – established in 1571


 FATHER VILLACORTA (record) / AUGUSTINIAN FRIARS (general map) – created in
1600
 FRAY JUAN MEDINA (biblioticahistorica Filipina) – founded in 1607
 MR. JOSE O SANTOS (record) – started at 1670. It is said that this is the correct one
based on the date of term of office of the first “KapitanMunicipal”ofMalabon.
 DON ISABELO DELOS REYES – the town was first part of Tondo since March 21,
1599.
 DON AGUSTIN SALAMANTE – the first “Kapitan Municipal”
