Dear

Welcome to the latest news from MEERQAT.

Journal articles
We are proud to announce that a paper describing the map-enabled experiential review
(MEER) approach that is at the heart of MEERQAT has been accepted for publication. The
article explores the theoretical underpinnings of the MEER approach and discusses
similarities between MEER and in situ simulation as techniques for engaging staff in quality
improvement through team-based reflection on routine practice. The paper will be published
in the September 2018 issue of Management in Healthcare.

Just a reminder that our paper on the successful use of a MEER-based tool in the
implementation of a quality improvement framework in the healthcare sector will be appearing
next month in Management in Healthcare, Vol. 3 (1): 1–16.

MEERQAT in Healthcare – The Epworth Richmond trial

The project at Epworth Richmond is just about to start its fifth month. The participating units
have now completed assessments using the MEERQAT basemaps for Clinical Handover
(NSQHS Standard 6), Preventing and Controlling Hospital Associated Infections (NSQHS
Standard 3), Medication Safety (NSQHS Standard 4) and Falls Prevention and Management
(NSQHS Standard 10).

Staff participating in the project also completed a survey at the end of month 3 and the results
are very positive. Staff in both units indicated they like reviewing the NSQHS standards using
this approach and have enjoyed the team-based discussions, noting they found it worthwhile
hearing the different perspectives amongst their colleagues. Importantly, nearly 90% indicated
they had learned new information about the national quality standards and about specific
hospital policies and protocols as a result of their participation.

The project principal investigator Annie Curtin has been very encouraged by how the project
is unfolding. “It’s great to see frontline clinical staff being enthusiastic about quality and getting
value from exploring how the national standards apply to what they do every day.”

Feature Upgrades
MEERQAT's latest new features allow basemap developers to add/edit swimlanes in their
basemaps, as well as set the default node ordering sequence for rating assessments. Both
these features can be accessed by opening any assessment that is derived from the
basemap and clicking the new editing buttons visible in the assessment page. Check out the
updated help pages in the MEERQAT online manual for advice on how to use these features.

2018 Conferences
We will be hosting trade booths at two major conferences in September this year: the
Australasian Evaluation Society (AES) International Evaluation Conference in Launceston (19
– 21 September) and the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM)
2018 Asia-Pacific health leadership congress in Darwin (19 – 21 September). We have also
submitted abstracts to both conferences and will keep you posted once we hear back from
conference organisers.

2018 Webinar Series

We are pleased to announce that Dr Donna Cohen will be presenting a series of free
webinars, commencing in July this year, addressing a range of topics relevant to evaluation
and quality improvement. The first two webinars are: “Getting more value from your program
logic models” and “Turning the theory of staff engagement in quality improvement into a
practical reality”. More details will be available shortly on how you can join us for these
sessions.

As always, we are more than happy to take you through all of the features and functionality of
MEERQAT with an online or phone consultation. Contact me or another team member for this
free service.
