Dear Mr. Isdananto,

Here’s my answer to the following question:

According to history the word Photography comes from ancient

Greek. “Photo” = Light and “Graph” = Drawing. So means Photography is
drawing with light. The most essential element of light in photography is called
Exposure. What is Exposure in photography and please explain your
understanding about Triangle Exposure?

Answer:
Exposure is the amount of light that reaches the camera’s sensor and affects how well the
light quality of an image. An image with good exposure is one that doesn’t contain too much
black (under exposure) or white (over exposure).
There are three things that affect exposure in camera; Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. Those
three things called Triangle Exposure.
Here’s the explanation about triangle exposure.

1. Aperture
Aperture is the “pupil” of the camera. Aperture works exactly like the pupil in human’s
eyes, it can widen or shrink to change the amount of light that is received. A wider
aperture means a higher amount of light that passes through the camera’s sensor.
Aperture affects two important things in photography which are exposure and depth
of field. The larger aperture, the brighter your photo and the smaller depth of field
which give you a shallow focus effect. Otherwise, the small apertures will give you
smaller exposure but a larger depth of field if you want all aspects in the photograph
come clear.
Here’s an example of photograph with wide aperture to focus on the couple and
create a small depth of field in the background.

2. Shutter Speed
Shutter speed is a measure of how long the camera’s shutter remains open. In this
case, it also affects how long the sensor received the lights. Shutter speed is what gives
you click sound when you capture a photograph. Faster shutter speed will give the
sensor less time to collect the light which will caused lower exposure and vice versa.
Shutter speed affects the motion blur in your photograph. The longer shutter speed,
let’s say, 6s, will capture any movement during those 6 seconds, which will create that
blur motion. For example, if you want to capture people who is running, you need to
change your shutter speed into the faster shutter speed to get a sharp image.
Otherwise, if you use slower shutter speed, the moving object will come out as blur.

3. ISO
ISO used to change the sensitivity of a camera’s sensor. This feature allows you to get
a bright picture in the dark condition. The higher ISO can higher the level of noise
(grain) in the picture as well. The image result will be less detail and even has some
strange colour shift. Still, a higher ISO will be necessary when your exposure is too dim
and you have no other way to capture a bright enough picture, in this case, you already
used the widest possible aperture and the slowest shutter speed but your photograph
still lack exposure. Thus, increasing the level of ISO will save your photograph.
