Summer Reading Assignments 2020-2021

(Due the 1st day of class, August 2020)

Advanced Composition (12th Grade Honors English)

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

An audacious, darkly glittering novel set in the eerie days of civilization's collapse, Station Eleven tells the spellbinding story of a Hollywood star,
his would-be savior, and a nomadic group of actors roaming the scattered outposts of the Great Lakes region, risking everything for art and
humanity. Courtesy of Goodreads.com

Your assignment is to read the novel carefully. You are responsible for securing your own copy of the novel, and you must bring it to class
with you along with your written assignment on the first day of school. The first several grades in the class will concern this novel; so not
doing the summer reading will be detrimental to your class grade.

Part 1: Graphic Organizer Project: Connections

You will build a graphic organizer that shows the main characters connections to Arthur Leander. You must include Jeevan, Kirsten,
Miranda, Clark, Elizabeth, and Tyler (you may include others if you wish to do so.)

You may design your graphic organizer any way you choose. The goal is to show the characters connection to Arthur and how he influences
their actions or thinking. Use textual support to support your findings.

Part 2: Essay: Cause and Effect

Throughout the novel, the different characters’ lives intersect and affect each other’s paths in both explicit and implicit ways. One person’s
actions, however innocuous can change the course of another’s life. Explore the theme of Cause and Effect, as it exists in Station Eleven.
How does one character’s actions affect future events? You can discuss actions and emotional response. Your essay should be between
3-5 pages, typed, double-spaced, 12pt font. Do not merely summarize the plot; be sure to address the prompt with a focused thesis, and be
sure to support your thesis with references to the text.

Be Ready: For Fall 2020, be prepared to dissect the different timelines, discuss character development and growth, and the theme of Art
and the Permanence.

Enjoy your summer and we look forward to discussing this ‘new classic’ in the Fall!
