MISSION OF RESEARCH

Gyan Yoga, the Supreme Yoga, is based on Knowledge that revolves

around Ideas - Ideas having a life of their own, independent of Time

and Space. But usefulness of even the most Fundamental Idea lies in

its relevance to Real Life and its Problems, that is, Empirical

Reality. Ideas, embodying empirical reality, lead to action; action

leads to outcome(s) and creates fact(s)/reality. Facts/Reality, in

turn, lead to the emergence of Ideas. This is the eternal web of

Theory/Idea and Reality/Facts. The Centre for Research Studies

seeks to generate New Knowledge of this Genre. It offers

opportunities to explore threshold areas of knowledge and

innovative research in emerging fields of economy and business.

2
Doctoral (Ph. D.) and Pre-Ph. D. (PGDRMeth) Programmes
In
Management, Economics and Commerce

Prologue

The triple processes of globalization, privatization and liberalization, initiated in eighties

and deepened in 1991-92, have unleashed unprecedented technological, institutional,
organizational and structural changes in all the sectors of Indian business and economy.
The change in mind-set and behavioral propensities on the one hand, and technology,
institutional set-up, and managerial techniques in conjunction with the rapidly emerging
new scenario on the other, have resulted both in new opportunities and daunting
challenges before leaders of business and knowledge creators. The globalization of the
economy in general and business in particular has resulted in the expansion and
diversification of the baskets of goods and services, accessible to the consumers, and newer
lines of production and new vistas of opportunities like BPO available to the entrepreneurs.
It has also brought in its trail new organizational structures, innovative models and mechanisms
of organizational decision making and hitherto fore unknown managerial techniques into the
economy and its business. Such changes as these make it imperative to match these by the
evolving of appropriate concepts, development of new theories, and forging of suitable tools and
methods of analysis to be dovetailed into the emerging realities. The emerging trend in
management, such as outsourcing, CRM and even Ambush Recruiting of capable human
resources of other organizations on the one hand, and privatization of Banks, Insurance
and other Service Sectors, and emergence of Retailing and Shopping Plazas and Call
Centres as important generators of business and employment, international financial crisis
and its big bang effect on business in general and growth and stock market in particular on
the other, have created the need for the development of HR Capabilities to meet the challenges of
evolving new strategies, executing the same and evaluating their impact to facilitate identification of
the need for further adaptation, or modification, or even complete substitution, if warranted by the
state of the market or the need for shifting policy paradigms.
Business Schools/Institutes have to respond to these challenges and emerging human
resource requirements with requisite knowledge and skills that can be dovetailed into the
human resource needs of the emerging business reality. This warrants the generation and
subsequent dissemination of new knowledge, new skills and innovative ways of teaching
and research. New knowledge can be generated mainly through research; though the received
knowledge, imported or indigenous, can be imparted both to the current and prospective
academicians, economists, traders managers and other businessmen through teaching,
seminars/conferences and publications. Explosive growth of knowledge, however, renders
existing knowledge redundant very quickly.

For the realization of above objectives, BIMTECH has been running Pre-Ph. D./M. Phil.
and Ph. D. programs in Management in collaboration with Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University,

3
Agra since 2000. Institute has also received affiliation with M.L. Sukhadia University,
Udaipur for Ph. D. program in management.

The institute has obtained recognition as a research centre of Mysore University also in
Management Science, Economics and Commerce, the three areas of management and economic
sciences. All three disciplines are not only closely inter-related but the concepts, theories,
methods and problems of research of one often tend to penetrate and protrude into others
also. An integrated and holistic view may, therefore, necessitate a multidisciplinary
framework of research and inter-disciplinary approach to analysis.

Research program of the institute has now attracted attention of such countries as Nepal,
Tanzania and Iran. Kirtipur City College, Katmandu has developed M. Phil. course work
which is an adaptation of the Pre - Ph.D. course work of BIMTECH. We already have one
Tanzanian teacher prosecuting Ph. D. level research at BIMTECH.
Senior Educational councellor of Islamic Republic of Iran has visited BIMTECH for
exploring opportunity of launching Joint Ph. D. program of University of Shahid Bahonar
of Kerman, Kerman and BIMTECH.
UGC has also made course work compulsory for Ph. D. level research. BIMTECH introduced it in
2000.

The doctoral program in management focuses mainly on problems of research in Business

Management, Merchandising & Retail Management, Insurance & Risk Management,
Family Business & Entrepreneurial Development, Rural Business Management,
International Business and Business Strategy, Policy and other Related Areas.

Research in Economics and Commerce focuses on problems having a direct bearing on a)

macro policy framework, b) emerging theoretical and methodological designs, c)
Application of theories and practice, and d) contemporarily important problems of
economy and/or commerce.

Objective

The objective of Ph. D. Programme is to retain the current and develop the emerging
scholars for career in teaching, research, training and consulting. The programme focuses
on (i) equipping the researchers with the knowledge of comprehensive and encompassing
research methodology; (ii) initiating research in priority and gap areas of knowledge to fill
up the existing vacuum in the theory and practice of management, economics and
commerce education; (iii) grooming highly motivated Teachers and Trainers for the
Institutes, which have been facing acute shortage of faculty due to rapid growth of
enrolments and proliferation of universities, business schools and research institutes in
India recently; (iv) preparing professionals, who are endowed with the requisite
intellectual capability, distinctive vision and perspective to cope up with the emerging
challenges of rapidly changing economic and business world; and (v) nurture the emerging
scholars for career in research by endowing them a) with an insatiable desire to know, b)

4
encouraging them to incessantly invoke intuitive insights, and imaginative speculation,
and c) induce them to explore and experiment with ideas in order to invest the same into
facts. The guiding principle is that ‘Ideas lead to action; actions create facts’.
Facts/Reality, in turn, is transformed into Practice which leads to the emergence of
empirical theorizing. This approach is natural, since ‘modern world is knowledge and
information centric both of which revolve around ideas’. It is inevitable that ‘the world is
ruled by ideas, not facts; Ideas that can live a life of their own without being affected by
facts for prolonged periods’. But ultimately ideas have to be matched with and verified with facts,
experiences, and hence, empirical reality. Such lasting Ideas only Research can generate.
BIMTECH strives and endeavors to promote Research of this type.

An important objective of the programme is to equip the scholars with the capability to
grasp and analyze the emerging trends in the constantly changing Business and Economic
Environment and foresee and forecast the future Potentials and Possibilities in order to throw
up New Concepts and Perceive and Conceive new Theories that may guide future Policies on the one
hand, and explain the new Facts or Reality on the other.

Focus of Research

Research scholars shall be encouraged to take up such areas for investigation for their
doctoral dissertations which will focus on (i) gaps between the received theories and
business practices and economic facts; ii) evolving of conceptual and theoretical framework
to explain the observed realities, where no concept or theory exists currently; (iii) sharpen
the skills and vision of the scholars for the formulation of macro or micro corporate policies
and strategies that will enhance competitiveness of Indian companies and their products
both in Indian and global markets; and (iv) endow scholars with the capability to
undertake independent post doctoral research required for corporate decision making and
macro policy formulation and evaluation and for leading the intellectual world.

For the conduct of research of this type at Ph.D. level, scholars are required to acquire
knowledge of (i) Methods and Methodology of research, (ii) Procedures of applying the
same to facts, and acquire the ability to choose appropriate method for each area of
investigation. The Pre-Ph.D. Programme has been developed for preparing scholars to
realize these goals.

The program shall focus on the originality of thought, novelty of approach, innovative
designs, scientific methodology and rigorous analysis based on sound logic/ theory and
methods of analysis.

For the realization of this goal of excellence, the institute has to be selective in admitting
scholars of requisite caliber, having proper motivation and appropriate aptitude for research and
willingness to undertake sustained hard work.

Nature and Structure of Ph.D. Program

M.Phil/PG Diploma in Research Methodology

PG Diploma in Research Methodology (PGDRMeth) and Ph.D. degree programs are offered in
two parts as an integrated whole. No one is granted exemption from it. Exemption may,
however be granted to those having M.Phil degree and having requisite knowledge of the
courses priscribed by BIMTECH.

6
PGDRMeth is compulsory for all candidates, seeking admission into Ph. D. program.
Those, who do not wish to proceed further to the Ph. D. program, may leave after the
completion of the diploma program. Such candidates may be granted Diploma in Research
methodology. Those, who wish to prosecute further research for Ph.D. degree, are required
to first complete the methodology program as a Pre-Requisite. The program is multi-
disciplinary in nature.

Ph. D. program thus comprise 2 parts, which shall be completed in two phases:
In the First Phase, a compulsory course in Research Methodology, spread over a period of
12-18 months, has to be completed. In the Second Phase, a dissertation on the topic selected
by the candidate and approved by the Doctoral Committee of BIMTECH and University will have
to be completed. However, candidates are allowed to initiate work on Ph.D. thesis through
2 projects under Pre Ph.D. program

Course Design of Research Methodology (PGDRMeth)

Research Methodology course is exhaustive, flexible but need based. Cafeteria approach may
be adopted. Therefore, the expanse and the contents of Research Methodology course may
be specially specified for groups of candidates separately with reference to the following,
though the courses may be serviced as an integrated whole for all the candidates:

a) Background in Mathematics and Statistics each candidate has had so as to suit the
individual candidate’s intellectual endowment and special needs to make up the
deficiency, if any. Proficiency possessed and aptitute for symbolic language and figure work
of the candidates may be kept in view;
b) Aptitude and felicity in logical thinking, rigorous analysis, and flair for application of
concepts, tools and techniques to information base;
c) Knowledge of such elements of Research Methodology as shall be required
specifically for the investigation of a given topic chosen for dissertation by individual
candidates;
d) Special needs of the selected topics of research of candidates will be taken care of in
the classroom situation; and
e) The minimum amount of knowledge of Research Methodology required for Ph.D.
level Research with reference to recent advances in the field.

Besides, all candidates are expected to have good knowledge of written and spoken English.

The program has cafeteria approach for serving individual needs from the common menu.
The objective is to endow the candidates with knowledge and develop skills not only to
understand and explain the observed phenomenon but also to apply the methods and techniques to
the problems of research and empirical facts so as to draw appropriate inferences logically,
objectively and scientifically.

7
It has often been observed that i) very sophisticated and complex method/ model/ technique is used
even though a) simpler method with fewer assumptions might have yielded similar or even better
results; ii) assumptions of the chosen analytical method/model significantly differ either from the
theoretical framewok and/or data base; and iii) inferences drawn fall far short of what the results
embody. The methodology course will seek to enable the candidates to skirt these pitfalls of research.

Course Contents of Research Methodology

Contents of Research Methodology course will exhaustively cover both theoretical and
empirical facets of the phenomenon of investigation, non-survey and survey techniques and
quantitative and qualitative methods of research. Contents will comprise (a) Basic Theoretical
and philosophical paradigms of Epistemology, that is, Theory of Knowledge, (b)
Methodology and methods of research, including both quantitative and non-quantitative
techniques of data analysis, and (c) Advances in the theory and practice of the
discipline/subject. Special attention shall be paid to empirical application of particular methods
with reference to specific theoretical framework of the problems of research selected by the candidates.
The contents of the Research methodology course have been divided into eight papers (See
Annexure).

Examination in Research Methodology

The examination in Research Methodology has been designed for the evaluation of candidates'
comprehension of concepts, underlying logic, assumptions and procedure of the methods/techniques
of analysis, ability to choose appropriate techniques or methods for application, actual application to
data and explanation of the results obtained from the analysis of data. But there shall be no semester
end examination.

Candidates shall be evaluated in Research Methodology in three parts: (i) Written

examination in four papers which will carry an aggregate of 400 marks; (ii) two research
projects, each project will carry 100 marks; iii) two seminar papers, each paper shall carry
100 marks.

There shall be internal assessment in each of the 4 written papers.

Assessment shall be based on i) Presentations; ii) Field work; and iii) Applications.

Internal Assessment shall carry a weight of 25 per cent marks of each of the four papers.

Evaluation of written part will take place continuously through tests, once in two months in each of
the 4 papers. Each test will focus on contents of each paper covered in a period of two
months. The test shall be devised to evaluate a) capacity of candidates to select a particular
method/technique for analysis from those available for the purpose; b) familiarity with
procedure; and c) ability to interpret results. Final marks will be calculated as the average
of marks/grades obtained in each test (once in two months) of each paper. All papers shall
be evaluated separately.

8
Two projects shall preferably be based on i) data collected for Ph. D. thesis; and ii) use of
methods/techniques learnt during the course work. The candidates will be required to choose
any 3 methods or techniques of analysis, develop the rationale of their choice, furnish detailed
explanation of the procedure followed and interpret the results obtained from the application of the
chosen concepts and methods/techniques to the data or information base. They are free to choose the
methods of analysis from any one or more papers in each project.

The projects shall be examined by a board of 2 examiners - Supervisor of the project and
one External Expert. The proposed guide for Ph. D. dissertation will preferably be
appointed to supervise the project work. BIMTECH shall appoint the external examiners.
Chairman, and Secretary of Doctoral Committee on the recommendation of the guide shall
choose examiner(s). Weights attached to the evaluation of projects shall be in the ratio of
7:3, that is, written project will carry 70 marks and viva 30 marks. The project work shall be
allowed to be incorporated in the thesis with or without modification as the case may be. Each
candidate is expected to present the findings of project research to a seminar before the
projects are submitted for evaluation. Each candidate will also be required to prepare two
seminar papers- one on the basis of Review of Literature pertaining to 1)
Quantitative/Non-Quantitative Models of the topic of research of the candidate, and 2)
Recent Advances in Theory and Practice in the subject of research of the candidate. Seminar
papers shall be presented by the candidate before the Doctoral Committee of the Institute.
Candidates shall be allowed to incorporate the contents of seminar papers with or without
modification in the thesis.

All candidates are required to attend 75 per cent of total sessions of learning-teaching. Classes are
held on Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday. Part time scholars will be required to attend classes
only on Sunday. Such candidates, as do not fulfill attendance requirement, will not be allowed to
appear in bi-monthly examinations. The admission to Ph. D. program of such candidates may also be
cancelled by the approval of the Doctoral Committee.
