Dear Reader:
Assalam o alaikum!
Thanks for selecting “Quranic Arabic Program” to learn the Arabic Language. We will take you through a
series of lessons. At the end, you will be able to understand the Arabic Language Insha Allah. This program
contains an easy approach to learn the Arabic Language. This program covers the language of Islamic
Literature but it is name the “Quranic Arabic Program” because the Quran resides at the central position in
this program.
People learn Arabic Language due to two reasons: To understand the Quran, the Hadith and classic Arabic
Literature; or to speak and write in the modern Arabic to communicate with Arabs. This course is targeted
towards the former objective. Although people with the second objectives can also get benefit of this
program.
Due to its systematic nature, Arabic is one of the easiest languages of the world. It has well-defined rules
and a developed language structure. If you are familiar with these rules, you can learn this language in a few
weeks.
To understand the Quran and the Hadith, it is essential to learn the Arabic Language used in the Quran, the
Hadith and the Islamic literature. We will focus on its linguistics, philology and figurative speech.
Study Methodology
Study Methodology is very simple. Study one lesson daily. Solve all the exercises provided under “Test
Yourself”. Do not read the answers before attempting the questions. Once you solve the exercises, compare
your answers with the answers provided to you. In a few weeks, you will find that your Arabic Language
skills are improving.
The Boxes
Following boxes are provided to you for your ready reference. They contain very important information for
you.
Level 1 – 5 are also divided into two streams. “A” series deal with the rules of Arabic Grammar &
Eloquence. Enough exercises are provided to you to learn the Grammar & Eloquence rules.
The objective of “B” Series is to build your vocabulary. Passages from the Quran, the Hadith and selected
writings of Arab scholars are provided to you. You have to learn the words and styles and then translate the
passages into English. You need not to cram these words. The lessons and the exercises are designed in a
way that you will automatically learn the grammar rules, words and Arabic styles. At this level, we shall not
provide you the answers for the B Series.
This program is not designed to teach you day-to-day conversation in the Arabic language. This program is
also not designed to teach you how to write in Arabic language. But this program will help you in achieving
these two objectives. You need an Arabic speaking environment as well as a teacher to achieve these two
objectives. Nevertheless, the program is basically designed to teach you comprehension in the Arabic
language.
Important Note
This book is the beta version of this program. Quality review is in progress.
Certain spelling, grammar or language mistakes are possible in this book.
For example, man, book, city are common nouns but “John”, “Introduction to Arabic Grammar”,
“London” are proper nouns. Learn the following rules regarding the Proper and Common Nouns in
Arabic language.
5%$ 5/
#- 5
6etc.
• Names of specific persons or places are Proper Nouns. For example
• All pronouns (78 ), pointing nouns ( ! ), and linking pronouns )
(( are Proper Nouns. For example 9: 5;< 5:= 5 5= etc.
• General names of things, person, or places are Common Nouns. In Arabic, all common nouns
end with a tanveen (double dhammah fathah > or kasrah ) at their last letter. For
example
? 1@ A 5?
AB 5?C3 5DE A . It means that we are talking about any man, any book, any
city or any month.
• Adjectives (the nouns which indicate an attribute of some person or something) are also
Common Nouns. For example FGIH A 5?
H
A 5?
JA 5?7# etc.
• In English, a common noun can be made a proper noun by adding a word “the” before it.
Similarly, in Arabic, a common noun is converted into a proper noun by adding before it.
For example
? 1@ K
A 5?
A# 5?C3% 5DE A . It means that we are talking about some specific
man, specific book, specific city and specific month.
• When is added to a common noun, its tanveen becomes a single dhammah, fathah or kasrah.

Do you know? If the language of a particular time has a word for something, it means that such item was
existing at that time. For example, if we find a word for “axe” in the literature of a society written in
500BC, it means that axe was used by that society. Similarly the word “computer” was not available in
the English literature of 1930s. Therefore, the literature is used for getting information about that society.

• If the ,4 A8$ is a pronoun, it will be used in its possessive case. You have already learnt the
possessive case in previous lessons. For example , BA3 H (his book), A1 BA3H (the book of both of them),
Yb1 BA3H (the book of all of those women), ; A BA3H (your book)

In G2X r$, you will find that the }2 is following its $ in case, gender, number and
specification. In L4 r$, the ,4 8$ will always be in case.

Dear Reader!
In previous lesson, we learnt the phrases. In this lesson, Build Your Personality
we shall learn the Arabic Sentence which is called . Be positive about the others. Take
Arabic sentences can be classified into two basic other actions positively.
categories:
• k : This is the sentence which starts with a noun. For example ? uHP
? NQ (Zaid is standing).
• kAH H' : This is the sentence which starts with a verb. For example
? NQ )A P (Zaid stood up).
We shall discuss the ' at a later stage. At the moment, we shall focus our discussion on the .
Consider the example of an English sentence. “Zaid is a man.” In this sentence, there are two parts: One is
the person “Zaid” about whom something is described. It is called the “Subject” in English and A
3A#@ $ in
Arabic. It is also called ,4
? &A$. Other part of the sentence is the description about the subject. This is
called the “Predicate” in English and A#Z A in Arabic. It is also called
? &$.
Consider the following points about the .
• In English, we use the helping verbs like is, am, are, was, were etc. to complete the sentence. In Arabic,
these helping verbs are not used. Instead of that, the subject is used as a proper noun and its predicate is
used as a common noun. As a result of that, the meaning of a helping verb is automatically assumed in the
sentence. If the subject is a common noun, it is made a proper noun by adding an before it. For
example 7
? #H }# (The house is big).
• It is important to note the difference between a G2X r$ and a . In the former, both the }2
and $ are either proper or common nouns. It is not possible that one of them is a proper noun or
other is a common noun. On the contrary, in , the
3#$ will be a proper noun and its sZ will be a
common noun. For example 7 ? # }
? B (a big house) or 7 #% } A# (the big house) is an example of . On
the other side 7 ? # }
# (the house is big) is an example of .
• The predicate follows its subject in case, gender and number. If the subject is :$
, its predicate will
also be :$
. If the subject is U$ &_X, its predicate will also be U$ &_X and so on. For example,
WH PH A WH *A (The two men are truthful), " ? A]HA "
AH S( (Muslim women are pious).
• If the subject is %$ of any non-intellectual noun, its predicate will be U$
. For example
kNt A j (the trees are long).
English GHB-
That is a great success. (Blue is the subject while
the red part is its predicate).

• A can be made negative by adding a word $ before it. For example, ? uP
? NQ (Zaid is
standing). If we add a $ before it, it will become, puP
? NQ $ (Zaid is not standing). Instead of $,
you can also use the word | A . It adds some emphasis to the sentence. The sentence will become
puP
? NAQ |
A (Zaid is not standing). For the time being, use the word |A only with :$
.
• An important point to note is that adding a negative word before the sentence results in a change in
form of the sZ. Originally, it was in '. Now it has changed to r+U.
• Another way to make a sentence negative is to add a $ or |
A . Add a C
H before the sZ and convert
it to . For example,
c uIHB
? NQ $ (Zaid is not standing), c uIBH
? NAQ |
A (Zaid is not standing). It
makes no difference in the meaning but as a result of that the case is changed.
• You can make a interrogative by adding a word EA= before it. Alternatively, you can add
the word V. In both cases, there will be no impact on the form of words but the meaning will be
changed to interrogative. For example,
? uP
? NQ E= (Is Zaid standing?), ? uP
? NQ V (Is Zaid standing?).
• In order to make the empathetic, usually a word RW4 or RWV is added. It makes the sentence
empathetic and also changes the form. The
3#$ is changed to r+U whereas the sZ remains as it is
in its '. For example,
? uP p
NQ RW4 (Definitely, Zaid is standing), ? uP p
NQ RWV (Definitely, Zaid is
standing).
• In order to convert the in past tense, usually word W is used. It has the same impact on
the form as that of |
A . The
3#$ remains as it is whereas the sZ is changed to r+U. Use the word
W only with :$
. For example puP
? NQ W (Zaid was standing).
• Sometimes, a
3#$ may be a phrase instead of a single word. For example ? uP
HA+ ES A (The
pious man is standing). Here the
3#$ is “The pious man or HA+ ES A ” which is a G2X r$.
Another example is W H uP y A]HA+y VA$!
HA+ SE A (The pious man and the pious woman
both are standing). There a complex phrase used as the
3#$. Two G2X r$ are combined with
each other to form a G2a- r$, that is the
3#$.
• If the noun after an 4 is proper, it will be considered 4 K$, otherwise, it will be
considered the sZ. For example, C 3% :A= (This book), C ? A3H := (This is a book)

In Classical Arabic, the words used to describe numbers were
limited. The maximum number was ~V (1000). In Modern
Arabic, words are invented for big numbers e.g. W$

Now look at the numbers from 11 to 19. From 13 to 19, the principle of using the reverse gender
numbers is followed.

Note the following points:
• For No. 22, the W of W&d4 and W3&d4 is kept as it is because there is
between W&d4 and W
K-.
• From 31-39, all numbers are made in the same way by replacing the word W
K- with the W_d.
Similarly for 41-49, the word WBV will be used. In the same manner, you can make words for the
numbers up to 99.
Look at the decade numbers from 20 to 90. You can count up to 99 according to the method
described in the previous page.

At the time of revelation of the Quran, a large number of slave-women were available
in the society who had no rights. Their masters used to cohabitate with them. Islam
provided them rights and declared them the wives of their masters. Ways to their
manumission were introduced. For details, see the book “Abolition of Physical &
Intellectual Slavery in Islam”. http://www.mubashirnazir.org/ER/Slavery/L0018-00-

Do you know?
In order to tease women, Pre-Islamic Arabs used to swear for not having sex with their wives. This
practice was called f*N4.The Quran closed the door of such oaths. If a person swears for not having sex
with his wife, she will become automatically free after four months.
Do you know?
The wisdom behind the instructions of Allah to wait for three months after the divorce is that both
husband and wife have a chance to think deeply about the consequences of their divorce on their
family. There is a high probability that both of them will reverse the process of divorce after thinking
again and again for three months and the family will not be ruined. After the three months, the divorce
will be enforced. In case of first or second divorce, both of them can even re-marry after the waiting
period. Allah wants to maintain the family up to the last extent.

Do you know?
In the patriarchic society of Pre-Islamic Arabia, there was a practice of divorcing wives and then
canceling the divorce in order to tease them to infinite number of times. In order to protect women, the
Quran limited the number of divorces to two. After the third divorce, the husband has no right to
cancel the divorce.
The law which was revealed to protect women, unfortunately people have started using it against them
and a heinous practice of “Halalah” (temporary marriage) has been invented. According to Islam, the
marriage is a life-time contract. If a couple divorces thrice, they are separated forever. If the woman
marries with another man and then that man divorces her or dies, she has the right to remarry the first
husband, if she wills. There is no concept of a temporary marriage in Islam. The Prophet ,- / 0
declared the person used in a temporary marriage is like a rented bull.
Do you know?
In these verses, a word
$ is coming again and again. It has two meanings: (1) good deeds about
which all human beings agree that they are good e.g. piousness, helping poor, chastity etc. (2)
established practice / law of a society. The Quran has left many things on the society to decide e.g.
how much amount a husband should pay to his wife at the time of marriage? How much he should pay
on monthly basis? How a husband and wife should divide the joint responsibilities of home? It is not
possible to make a universal law about it. Therefore, it is left on the society / government to decide
about it. In these verses, the word has been used in the both meanings.
