WISDOM OF WELLNESS
Holistic Health – WoW1 1

Sampoorna Arogyam, is Health for All that leads to Santhosham.

This means having an Overall Holistic Health will lead to Happiness.
This is the purpose of this book - to learn, practice, improve, live and
share the knowledge evolved from the ancient wisdom of wellness, for
the benefit of mankind present & future.

Health is fundamental for happy living. When wealth is lost it can be

regained, but when health is lost, it is lost for ever.
What is health? As defined by WHO “Health is a state of well being
physically, mentally and socially. It is not absence of disease or
infirmity”. This definition is in no way quantifiable or verifiable
scientifically, however this is the best available to day.

Health is the body mind fragments aligning with the unity of Almighty.
Ancient Yogic wisdom provides this kind of Total health called Holistic
Health. While much is said about what it is but very less is said how to
attain it. Many saints, sages and Philosophers and in particular
Shri Vethathiri Maharishi has brought out a practical yet simple
approach for Sampoorna Arogyam – Holistic Health.

The Holistic approach encompasses the following 5 main practices in

a step-by-step manner for a progressive but in a sure manner.
- Physical Health,
- Mental Health,
- Emotional Health,
- Social Health and
- Spiritual Health

HOLISTIC HEALTH 2

Sampoornam refers to Totality or Wholeness or Everything or Holistic.

We are not body alone. We are a system of Skeleton, Nervous,
Digestive, Muscular, Reproductive, Circulatory etc. as described by
modern science. However this does not include the systems of life
force (prana) or the mind or the consciousness. It lacks the Holistic
approach at this point of time. However some of the modern medical
scientists do advocate the integrative approach – AYUSH for example.

But the ancient system describe us as holistic comprising of five

Koshas (sheaths) or three sareeras (bodies). These descriptions offer
a better understanding of the whole than the parts.

The five koshas are:

1. Annamaya Kosha (Physical level)
2. Manomaya Kosha (Mental level)
3. Pranamaya Kosha (Life force level)
4. Vingnanamaya Kosha (Consciousness level)
5. Anathamaya Kosha (Spiritual level)

The simplified approach with three sareeras:

1. Sthula sareera (Physical body)
2. Shukuma sareera (Astral body)
3. Karana sareera (Causal body)

The body as a bio system is intricately networked with the universal

system. Therefore body health cannot be seen in isolation with the
Universal system. Hence the need for Holistic approach –
Sampoornam.
