Method Statement Soil Nailing.

1.0 Equipment.

1.1. Soil Nail Machine – Rotary machine with down hole hammer with bit or drag
bit depending on soil formation
1.2. Air compressor- 100 psi and 650 CFM
1.3. Grout mixer
1.4. Grout pump

Method statement

2.0. General

2.1. This method statement is intended to be a step by step sequential order of all the
operations entailed in the fabrication, installation, grouting and stressing of soil nail.

3.0. Reinforcement

3.1. The effective reinforcement for soil nails comprise of one length of high yield steel
bar of Engineers specification of other types of reinforcement either manufacture
by local steel mill or specially imported types conforming to all the relevant standard.

4.0. Slope preparation

4.1. Localized slope surfaces shall be trimmed when necessary.

5.0. Temporary Staging.

5.1. The types if drilling machine used shall be dependent on the slope profile, height,
spacing and the availability of working platform. Temporary staging shall be
erected along the slope side so as to enable drilling of the soil nails by small
portable drilling machine and also as a platform for workers. Temporary staging
shall be erected form bracing pipes fastened together by pipes clamps. Rigidity of
the whole frame is enhanced by having extra diagonal bracings and firmness of the
ground on which the supports stand must be ensured.

6.0. Drilling

6.1. Generally, minimum 100 to 125 mm nominal diameter borehole is drilled at the
required location with either rotary or rotary percussive drilling machines to the
required depth and inclinations. Temporary casings are to be used if necessary to
stability of the boreholes. The drill will be stop in 3 meter depth beneath the hard
profile (eg: rock, etc.) if being fund during the process.

7.0. Installation of reinforcement.

7.1. Prior to any insertion of any reinforcement, the boreholes are to be flushed clean
with air.
The insertion of the reinforcement shall either be by crane or manually. During the
insertion of the reinforcement, no excessive force shall be allowed. In case of any
refusal the reinforcement shall be removed form the borehole and the borehole
shall be flushed with air.

8.0. Grouting.

8.1. Grouting shall be carried out after the insertion of the reinforcement. The grout
shall mixed in a high speed grout mixer and pump into the bore holes by tremie
method through a PVC grout hose. Grouting shall continue until neat cement grout
flows out from the boreholes. If temporary casings are used, they shall be
withdrawn immediately after grouting is completed. Upon full withdrawal of
immediately after grouting is topped up where necessary.

10.0. SAFETY & HEALTH PLAN

10.1. Job Safety & Health Analysis (JSA)

10.1.1. Frequency of safety inspections

Safety inspections with the purpose of identifying state of cleanliness, unsafe conditions, unsafe
practices and any infringement of safety, health and environmental aspects must be carried out at
project site / workplace by the following:-

- SSS – On a regular patrol basis (with inspection reports issued every two weeks)

- Sub-Contractor– At least once a week

Observations made during inspections must be followed-up immediately.

10.1.2. Risk Assesment

Risk assessment will be conducted accordingly in 3 steps:

1. Pre-commencement assessment
2. On-going assessment
3. Post-job assessment

Pre-commencement assessment

This assessment shall be conducted prior to the work or task to begin. It will covers:

a. Preparation of Work Hazard Assessment / Job Safety Analysis (Work Hazard Assessment
form).
b. Preparation of safety method statements of specific job / task.
c. Pre-commencement checklist form

On-going Assessment

This assessment shall be conducted as the work is being carried out.

a. Monthly safety audit / walk-through audit / Safety Inspection Report.

b. Reviews of Work Hazard Assesment / Job Safety Analysis for the work being carried out.
c. Feedback from regular toolbox talk/safety briefing.

Post job Assessment

This assessment shall be conducted as the job / task completes, as preventive measures should
there be any possibility of risk arise after the job task completed or being stopped.

All findings from the Job Hazard Assessments will be followed by Corrective Action Plan and
Penalty System. Information will be dispersing to the workers in Safety and Health Awareness
Programme.

10.2. Information to Personnel

i. All workers & staff to attend the Safety Training or Safety Induction Course before
commencing works at site and attendances shall be recorded in an induction checklist
ii. All site personnel shall wear proper Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) Safety helmet,
safety vest & safety boots
iii. Monthly safety meeting shall be held with all the sub-contractors related to works
iv. All workers to attend the daily toolbox meeting at site and attendances shall be recorded

10.3. Emergency Arrangement.

i. An Emergency Response & Communication Team shall be formed at site

ii. The organization chart, list of emergency contact person & relevant authorities with their
contact numbers shall be shown in the notice board
iii. The emergency situations which may occur are shown in the table for Job Safety & Health
Analysis. The level of risk or severity of the accident dictates the emergency level
iv. In the event of emergency, the site management staffs must evaluate the situation and
commence the necessary procedures as follows:

a. Raise the alarm

b. Stop works
c. Remained compose
d. Make sure the notification of emergency or evacuation are in place for all workers
surrounding the site
e. Make sure all workers are assemble at designated assembly point
f. Make sure first aid kit are prepared at the assembly point
g. All workers are told not to leave the assembly point until further notice
h. Headcount shall be conducted
i. First aiders shall attend to the injured workers
j. Prepare assessment report for the losses.

11.0. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

11.1. Air Quality and Noise Level

All construction machineries shall be well maintained in good working condition to reduce
emission of soot, smoke and noise.

The following measure shall be implemented if the above mentioned is deteriorating:

1. Increase maintenance frequency

2. Replace to better equipment if necessary
3. Switch off equipment if not in used
4. Supply workers on site with additional PPE ( ear plug & mask )

Water truck shall be consistently spraying the water to minimize the dust especially during hot
weather if any transport operation is going on.

11.2. Water Quality

Water from the construction works will be filtered & channeled to the proper drainage. Plastic
sheet cover shall be placed over the excavated trench.

11.3. Waste Management

Surplus soil, hacked pavement and demolished concrete shall be removed from site regularly to
the designated exposed site.

Schedule waste from maintenance works of machinery, vehicles & tools will be placed in
designated area. Proper oil tray or drum shall be placed to prevent oil spillage. Subsequent waste
shall be collected and transfer to area as assigned.

11.4. House Keeping

Housekeeping is an essential part of safety for the daily routine & shall include the following item:

1. Maintain the access road to all working area

2. Park the machineries in orderly manner
3. No littering around the site
4. Proper stacking or stockpiling on site

11.5. Site Reinstatement

Upon completion of all installation works, the machineries shall be properly packed and ready for
demobilization. Site area shall be cleaned from any other leftover, surplus and unused materials.

Necessary remedy works shall be carried out to maintain the site area at a condition as it was
prior to relocation works.
