Per Bacco Cellars
by Darren Delmore
When restaurateur Marco Rizzo and winemaker Craig Shannon got
together in 1998 over a few bins of Chardonnay grapes, they didn’t
necessarily expect to become darlings of the wine press. But that inau-
gural release of Arroyo Grande Valley Chardonnay got a 92 point score
in a major wine magazine, and since then they’ve kept that mozzarella
momentum coming out of the grinder with wines made in the fashion
they’re passionate about. Through the erratic trends of varietal
favoritism and climatic conditions, it’s been refreshing to see Per Bacco
continue to make wines in the manner that they originally set out to
do, with a focus on food-friendliness and approachability.
I recently stopped into the tasting room which is purely about the
wine. No jewelry, no oil, no cookbooks; wine is the focus. Tasting
room manager Grace Kegel pointed out, “We charge just a five dollar
fee and customers can choose six wines out of the nine options to food to complement the current releases and a fun, mellow, relaxing
taste. We waive one fee per bottle purchased,” she continued, “and the vibe. There’s a real casual atmosphere here…a great place to come

Route 246 – the epicenter of premier winegrape growing in Santa

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and began winemaking under Steve Clifton,
of Palmina and Brewer-Clifton. Steve Clifton coached Ryan on the
importance of minimal interventionism in winemaking, as Ryan
pursued hands-on experience at Palmina, and then later, under the
direction of Kris Curran and Victor Gallegos at Sea Smoke. In the

Wine Tasting in
SOLVANG
Lincourt Vineyards
The pastoral atmosphere and casual grace of Lincourt may tempt you to
kick back and relax, but don’t be fooled. They are very serious about their
wines and are extremely focused on a mission of creating wines that showcase
the ideal grape-growing conditions of Santa Barbara County.
Founded in 1996 by financier Bill Foley, Lincourt is a producer of ultra-
premium wines from the Santa Maria and Santa Ynez valleys. A long-time wine
enthusiast, Bill has been particularly entranced with the wines of Burgundy. In
1994, when he and his wife Carol relocated their family to Santa Barbara, he
discovered that the potential to produce some of America’s most distinguished
versions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lay just miles north of his home. Bill
hired renowned winemaker Alan Phillips to assist him in securing vineyard
sites and spearheading his dream of producing the benchmark wines of the
region. Bill and Carol named their new winery Lincourt, in homage to their
two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney.
The Lincourt winery is located in the heart of Santa Barbara wine country,
on Alamo Pintado Road in the Santa Ynez Valley. Originally a dairy farm, the
property retains the rural charm and simplicity of an earlier era. The quaint
tasting room is located in the former farmhouse, a 1926 Sears Craftsman kit
home. The barns have been converted to a winery and barrel rooms, and
equipped to allow for handcrafted, premium winemaking. Great fruit, dedi-
cated winemakers, an incredible climate and a serene setting – Lincourt
provides the best of Santa Barbara wine country!
The diversity of Santa Barbara County is reflected in each wine. Unique to
the west coast, Santa Barbara is blessed by two valleys with east-west orienta-
tion. The Santa Maria and Santa Ynez valleys funnel the cool ocean breezes and
maritime fog to the western vineyards, creating a haven for the cool-climate
varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Even in the warmer reaches, farther
from the ocean, the fog cools the vineyards at night, allowing the grapes to
retain proper acid and sugar balance. Warmer climate grapes such as Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah thrive in these areas. Santa Barbara County also
enjoys one of the longest grape-growing seasons in the world. Mild winters
result in early bud break. Unlike many other notable growing areas, fall in
Santa Barbara is typically rain free, allowing the grapes extended time to hang
on the vine. The results are grapes that are physiologically mature and
extremely flavorful without overripe character. Lincourt strives to produce
wines that reflect the diverse regional and personality of Santa Barbara County.
