Extrusion

High-qualit y tool steels

for the extrusion industry
your areas of application for Extrusions

More than just steel.

For over 125 years, the development of our company has

been shaped by tool steels and their applications. Our many
years of experience and our advanced technological equip-
ment - from primary steel melting to ready-to-use tooling
- are the basis of the globally recognized quality of the pro-
ducts from Kind & Co., Edelstahlwerk, KG.

We look forward to meeting your challenge!

Application areas

Extrusion and the products produced by this method have

now become an indispensable part of our daily life. The
importance of the method was triggered not only by tech-
nical developments on the equipment side but also by con-
stant development on the tooling side. Our customers‘ con-
stantly increasing demands, is the driving force behind our
daily work.

The versatility of extruding is nearly inexhaustible. There

is no other method for reshaping such a great variety of
metals. The bandwidth of the applications of extruded pro-
ducts is huge: For instance, easily soft aluminium alloys
used in the building industry in the form of window profiles,
while hard aluminium alloys are used, for example, in struc-
tural components in aircraft, cars and trains.

Besides aluminium, which comprises the majority of com-

pacted metals, the following metals are also formed with
extrusion: Copper, bronze, steel, tin, nickel, titanium and
various soldering materials.
Production Process in detail

mer requirements

Secondary metallurgy for the specific setting of the material properties

Manufacturing of steel ingots/electrodes in rising cast

Hot-forming and open die forging presses and forging hammers for, e.g., liners, stems,
contour forged parts

Ring-rolling plant for the manufacturing of seamless rolled tool holders and clamp rings

Setting the optimum tensile properties in various

austenitising furnaces (vacuum and conventional)

Automated, process-controlled hardness test procedures according to Rockwell, Brinell,

Vickers

Manufacture of ready-to-use tools

Verification of the tool properties based on corresponding test methods

tECHNICAL dATA - TEMPERING CHART
USN (H 11), USD (H 13), RPU
58
The classic hot-work tool grades USN, USD and RPU are
56
characterised by good high-temperature strength and great
54 toughness. The higher vanadium content in the tool steel
52 grade USD, allows for greater high-temperature strength and
50 resistance to tempering when compared to USN.
48
Hardness in HRC

46

44 USN
When high levels of high-temperature strength and resistance
42
to softening are required, RPU hot-work tool steel is recom-

mended. Its higher molybdenum content, when compared
RPU
to USN and USD, provides it with greater high-temperature
38
strength and resistance to tempering.

TQ1, HP1, HTR

58
Our independently developed TQ1 and HP1 steels are based
56 on the principle of the highest degree of purity. Not only in
54 regards to their phosphorus and sulphur content but also
52 toughness-reducing trace elements such as boron, copper, tin
50 and zinc. TQ1 and HP1 excel through the special combination
48 of great high-temperature strength with simultaneously high

46 ductility. The difference between HP1 and TQ1 is the microal-

44
loyed element niobium. Microalloying with niobium and an
TQ1

42
adapted hardening temperature lends it nearly the same pro-
HP1 perties as TQ1. HP1 was also developed for the highest requi-
40
rements in extruding applications.
38 HTR

36
The HTR steel was developed for requirements that demand

HWD (H 19), HMoD (H 19A), RM 10 Co

58 The steels HWD, HMoD and RM 10 Co are included in the
56 group of cobalt alloyed hot-worked steels.
54 The HWD steel unifies great high-temperature strength with a
52
high resistance to softening. It´s also has good high tempe-
rature wear resistance. It is preferred for dies, die holders and
50
mandrel tips during heavy-metal extruding.
48
Hardness in HRC

46
The steel RM 10 Co is especially resistant to softening. RM 10
HWD
44 Co is used as inner material liners for difficult to compact sol-
42 HMoD dering materials, dies, die holders and pressure pads.
40 When analysed, the HMoD steel is similar to HWD steel and is
RM 10 Co
38
used in the same application area. To improve the ductility of
HMoD, it is alloyed with Molybdenum, which also facilitates
36
the cooling of the tool.

tECHNICAL dATA - Creep rupture strength
SA 718, SA 50 Ni, HWF (A286)
The two materials SA 718 and SA 50 are precipitation har-
dening alloys with excellent high temperature strength. It is
600
preferably used during heavy-metal extrusion, where the resi-
500
stance to softening of martensitic hot-worked steels is insuf-
ficient. These materials are generally used for dies, mandrel

400 tips and pressure pads. Using SA 718 for inner liners in the
ingot container when extruding bronze, copper and copper-
300 SA50Ni nickel alloys can significantly extend the operating life. One
of the best-known representatives of austenitic hot-work
HWF
200 steels is HWF steel. This austenitic, precipitation hardening
SA718 steel is used during extrusion for particularly highly thermally
100
stressed inner liners, dies or die holders.

Construction & Finite-Element method (FEM)

Critical tool areas can be checked in FEM analyses.

The experiences gained from numerous relining operations

and FEM simulations are applied to the further develop-
ment of tools.

Custom designed air-cooled containers are optimised

through the FEM analyses.

Heat treatment

Along with steel production and forging, proper hardening and tempering also have great influence on the perfor-
mance of the tools. Heat treatment is performed at Kind & Co. with a number of various hardening and tempering
furnaces.

We are the right point of contact for selecting the most suitable steel grades for hardening, servicing and solving
your demanding material challenges. Our qualified application engineers are glad to advise you on your specific
needs.
