FRAGMENTATION RESISTANCE
The fragmentation resistance of the various components of the EOD® 9 Suit, in terms of
V50 levels obtained according to the MIL-STD-662F Test Specification, using the 1.1 gram
(17 grain) chisel nose FSP fragment simulator, meets or exceeds the following values:

Component V-50 (meters/second) V-50 (feet/second)

V50 BACKGROUND
V50 testing is a statistical tool used for evaluating the penetration resistance of materials
involved in ballistic armour to specific laboratory fragment simulators. The V50 test is used
extensively in ballistic material design, in tandem with product development. Under some
conditions, it may also be used to compare relative performance of fragmentation resistant
materials or armour, so long as the materials are identical in basic construction, e.g., com-
paring aramid soft body armour. The V50 limit cannot be used to compare dissimilar ar-
mour constructions, e.g., soft versus rigid materials. Care must be taken when interpreting
V50 ratings due to the fact that the probability of an explosive device fragment having the
exact same physical properties as the simulated fragment used during testing is essentially
non-existent. There exist a number of different fragment simulators, both in terms of shape
and size, thus it is necessary to stipulate the precise simulator that is being used to arrive
at a V50 value for objective comparisons. Although standardized test methods exist for
V50 determination, there still exist subtle variations in carrying out the actual test between
different laboratories/manufacturers, which may lead to small variations in the V50 results.

EOD® 9 SUIT

USER MANUAL

INTRODUCTION
The EOD® 9 Suit provides superior, balanced protection against the four
conventional threats associated with an explosion or blast event: over-
pressure, fragmentation, impact and heat. The suit allows the technician
to maintain excellent mobility, flexibility, and field of view. It is compatible
with various accessories, including:
• body cooling system
• hardwire communication systems
• wireless communication systems
• chemical-biological protective undergarments and equipment

When dressing for either a training session or an actual intervention,

always use an EOD® 9/9A helmet and visor to complete the EOD® 9
ensemble.

A build-up of body-generated heat inside the suit can cause heat stress
and dehydration. Intake fluids before suiting up and during rest periods,
to combat this potential problem. Use of the optional hydration unit is
recommended.

The following procedures outline the most effective and efficient method
of donning. Follow these step-by-step directions to ensure the suit is put
on properly. Deviation from these instructions can result in unnecessary
time delays and improper donning in emergency situations.

NOTE: The EOD® 9 Suit use VELCRO® closures for rapid donning and
doffing. Secure the closures by patting the VELCRO® down firmly with
your hand to create a strong mating effect. Make sure that the maximum
surface area of the VELCRO® is matched.

Use the guidelines in the following table to ensure that the EOD® 9 Suit
fits properly.

In an emergency doffing situation: The Remote Control Module for the

EOD® 9A Helmet has a locking mechanism on the connecting cable
where it connects to the helmet. This is required in order to maintain the
Electromagnetic Compliance (EMC) Class A rating as the remote needs
to remain firmly fixed to the helmet at all times during use. The EOD® 9
Helmet has a function where the Remote Control Module cable will quick
release in cases of emergency doffing. This is not the case for the EOD®
9A Helmet as there is no longer a quick release capability due to the
locking mechanism.

PACKING & STORAGE

A number of conditions associated with bomb disposal produce moisture
(i.e., perspiration) inside the suit. It is important to thoroughly air dry the suit
before storage. Never store the EOD® 9 Suit in the carrying bag if it is damp
or soiled. Use the supplied hanger for drying. A Suit dryer is available as an
accessory form Med-Eng or an authorized distributor. Examine all parts of
the suit after each use. Check all seams, pockets, snaps and straps. Make
sure all ballistic inserts are correctly and securely positioned. Remove any
lint or dirt from the VELCRO® patches.

NOTE: When securing VELCRO® closures, attach the entire surface area
of the closure. This will ensure that the hook patch does not collect debris
or cause premature wear on the outer surface of the suit.
IMPORTANT: Do not hang the EOD® 9 Suit for storage. Pack and store
the suit in the supplied carry bag. The steel hanger is supplied for drying
purposes only. No more than 2 suits should be stacked together. Stacking
additional items on top could cause chest and groin plates to buckle or
crease.
Packing the Jacket
NOTE: For convenience, The EOD® 9 Helmet Remote
Controller may remain attached to the EOD® 9 Suit for
packing and storage.
1. Place the fully open carry bag on a flat surface.

and plug the end of the patchcord into the pocket
on the back of the collar.
3. Re-fasten the jacket VELCRO® closures at the:
waist, chest, shoulder and collar.
4. Make sure the sleeve zippers are fastened.
5. Bring both sleeves over the front of the jacket (A).
6. Push the groin plate (B) up so that it sits on top of
the chest plate inside the pouch to ensure that the
jacket fits easily inside the carrying bag.
7. Slide the hanger inside the collar.

CARE & MAINTENANCE OF THE EOD® 9 SUIT

CAUTION: Do not dry clean or use strong cleansers, bleach, or chlorine
solutions of any kind on the EOD® 9 Suit. These cleaning methods will
damage the moisture-repellent treatment on the outer shell.

Routine Inspection
Perform on-going inspections of the seams, VELCRO® closures and
snaps to ensure that the suit is in good condition. A number of conditions
associated with normal use produce moisture (i.e. perspiration) inside the
suit. Thoroughly air-dry the suit before storage. If the suit is damaged
in any way, contact Med-Eng directly, or through an authorized agent/
distributor, for advice on repairs. Check protective inserts to ensure that
they are flat (not bunched), and properly positioned.

Cleaning (Lightly Soiled)

If the suit is lightly soiled, it is not necessary to remove the protective
inserts and place the suit in a washing machine. Instead, use a brush to
remove surface dirt, wipe the suit with a damp cloth and then hang to dry.

Laundering (Heavily Soiled)

1. Before laundering a suit, remove ALL protective inserts, the patchcord
and the Back Protector.

WARNING: Failure to remove the protective inserts before laundering

may damage the suit and affect protection. Never place the protective
inserts in a washer, dryer or dry cleaning machine.

2. Once the protective inserts have been removed, ensure that all
snaps, zippers and VELCRO® closures are completely re-fastened.
3. Wash the outer shell in an automatic washer with warm water and a
mild detergent. Do not dry clean or use bleach or similar solutions.
4. Hang the outer shell to dry. Never place the suit in a dryer.
5. Use a soft cloth and mild soap and water to clean the protective
inserts. Never heavily wet or submerge protective insert pouches in
water or cleaning solutions.
6. Replace the protective inserts only when the outer shell is completely
dry.

CARE & MAINTENANCE: HYDRATION UNIT

(OPTIONAL COMPONENT)
CAUTION: Never use boiling water. Fill only with liquid less than
80ºC (176ºF).

Cleaning the Reservoir

Use hot soapy water to clean the reservoir and rinse thoroughly with
hot water. For tough cleaning jobs: Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to 3/4
cup of water and shake for 30 seconds. Add 1/4 cup of lemon juice and
shake for 30 seconds and vent by loosening the cap away from the face.
Repeat shaking and venting 3 times. Expel as much air as possible,
tighten the cap and allow the bag to soak for 20 minutes. Rinse 3 times
with hot water.

CAUTION: When adding lemon juice to baking soda, effervescence

(carbonation) occurs and will cause pressure to build in a capped
reservoir.

Maintaining the Zipper Track

Keep the zipper track clear of sand and grit; if the track becomes dirty,
rinse before using. Periodically lubricate with petroleum jelly for optimal
performance and to extend the life of the zipper track.

Cleaning the Bite Valve

The Bite Valve provides maximum flow at roughly half compression. The
valve consists of two separate parts and can be easily disassembled for
cleaning to prevent the growth of microorganisms.
To remove the bite valve from
drinking tube: roll the sleeve
portion of valve body (where
tube goes in) back toward the
mouthpiece. Pull the valve body
off the tube end. To disassemble
the bite valve for cleaning: Roll
back the valve body to expose
the yellow diaphragm. Remove
To reattach, moisten the tube end and
the diaphragm. Clean with mild

detergent or isopropyl alcohol
(1cm) past where sleeve meets the
and rinse. Reassembly: moisten
thicker part of the valve body. If the
