CHAPTER 2

AREA AND POPULATION

This section includes abstract of available data on area and population of

the Chandigarh according to different censuses. The concepts and definitions used in the
2001 census are given below:

Work:
Work was defined as participation in any economically productive activity.
Such participation was physical or mental in nature.
Main Workers:
Main Workers were those who had worked for the major part of the year
i.e. who were engaged in any economically productive activity for 183
days or more during the year.

Marginal Workers:
Marginal workers were those who did not work for a major part of the
year, i.e. those who worked for less than 183 days in the year.
Workers:
Non workers were those who had not worked any time in the year.
Household:
Household:
A household is a group of persons who commonly live together and take
the meals from common kitchen unless the exigencies of work prevented
any of them from doing so.
Literates:
A Person who can both read and write with understanding in any
language.
