MAGNETIC FIELD

 A vector field that describes the magnetic influence of electric charges in relative motion and
magnetized material.

Formula:

Illustrations of Magnetic Field:

Application:

1. A beam of protons moves in a circle of radius 0.25 m. The beam moves perpendicular to a 0.30 T
magnetic field. (a) What is the speed of each proton? (b) Determine the magnitude of the centripetal
force on each proton. The mass of a proton is mP = 1.67 × 10 27 kg and it has a charge of +e where e =
1.609 × 10 19 C.

2. A charge of +55 μC and mass 0.013 kg has, at the moment shown below, a speed of 15000 m/s in the
direction shown. It is travelling in a region near the surface of the earth where the magnetic field is
uniform and has a magnitude of 0.125 T. There is also an electric field E = 2500 N/C. Draw a free body
diagram showing all three forces and determine the acceleration of the charge. The velocity of the
charge is perpendicular to the magnetic field but makes an angle of 40.0° with the electric field.

MAGNETIC FLUX

 defined as the number of magnetic field lines passing through a given closed surface

Formula:

Application:
1. An ionized helium atom has a mass of 6.6 x 10- 27kg is projected perpendicular into a magnetic field
with a magnitude of 0.75 T with a speed of 4.4 x 105 m/s. The radius of its path is 0.012 m.

a. Which circle in the diagram shows the path followed by the electron, the red or the blue?

2. A velocity selector in a mass spectrometer uses a 0.100-T magnetic field.

a. What electric field strength is needed to select a speed of 4.00 x 10^6 m/s?

Why is magnetic flux zero in a closed surface?

LORENTZ FORCE

  force on a charged particle due to electric and magnetic fields.

Formula:
Application:

1. An electron moving perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field 0.500T undergoes circular motion
of radius 2.80 mm. What is the speed of electron?

2. A proton moves in a uniform magnetic field of strength 0.500 T magnetic field is directed along
the x-axis. At initial time, t= 0s, the proton has a velocity of 1.95x10^5i +2.00x10^5k m/s. Find
a. At initial time, what is the acceleration of the proton.
b. What is the acceleration of the proton at t=3 mins.?

3. Let E be the electric field of magnitude 6.0x10^6 N/C and B be the magnetic field magnitude
0.83 T. Suppose an electron is accelerated with a potential of 200 V, will it show zero deflection?
