Green building practices aim to reduce the environmental impact of buildings. Buildings account for a
large amount of land use, energy and water consumption, and air and atmosphere alteration.
Considering the statistics, reducing the amount of natural resources buildings consume and the amount
of pollution given off is seen as crucial for future sustainability, according to EPA. The environmental
impact of buildings is often underestimated, while the perceived costs of green buildings are
overestimated. A recent survey by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development finds that
green costs are overestimated by 300 percent, as key players in real estate and construction estimate the
additional cost at 17 percent above conventional construction, more than triple the true average cost
difference of about 5 percent.

Green buildings often include measures to reduce energy use. To increase the efficiency of the building
envelope, (the barrier between conditioned and unconditioned space), they may use high-efficiency
windows and insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors. Another strategy, passive solar building design, is
often implemented in low-energy homes. Designers orient windows and walls and place awnings,
porches, and trees to shade windows and roofs during the summer while maximizing solar gain in the
winter. In addition, effective window placement (daylighting) can provide more natural light and lessen
the need for electric lighting during the day. Solar water heating further reduces energy loads.
On site generation of renewable energy through solar power, wind power, hydro power, or biomass can
significantly reduce the environmental impact of the building. Power generation is generally the most
expensive feature to add to a building.
Water efficiency

Reducing water consumption and protecting water quality are key objectives in sustainable building.
One critical issue of water consumption is that in many areas of the country, the demands on the
supplying aquifer exceed its ability to replenish itself. To the maximum extent feasible, facilities should
increase their dependence on water that is collected, used, purified, and reused on-site. The protection
and conservation of water throughout the life of a building may be accomplished by designing for dual
plumbing that recycles water in toilet flushing. Waste-water may be minimized by utilizing water
conserving fixtures such as ultra-low flush toilets and low-flow shower heads. Bidets help eliminate the
use of toilet paper, reducing sewer traffic and increasing possibilities of re-using water on-site. Point of
use water treatment and heating improves both water quality and energy efficiency while reducing the
amount of water in circulation. The use of non-sewage and greywater for on-site use such as site-
irrigation will minimize demands on the local aquifer.

Building materials typically considered to be 'green' include rapidly renewable plant materials like
bamboo (because bamboo grows quickly) and straw, lumber from forests certified to be sustainably
managed, ecology blocks, dimension stone, recycled stone, recycled metal, and other products that are
non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or recyclable (e.g. Trass, Linoleum, sheep wool, panels made from
paper flakes, compressed earth block, adobe, baked earth, rammed earth, clay, vermiculite, flax linen,
sisal, seagrass, cork, expanded clay grains, coconut, wood fibre plates, calcium sand stone, concrete
(high and ultra high performance, roman self-healing concrete[10]) , etc.[11][12]) The EPA
(Environmental Protection Agency) also suggests using recycled industrial goods, such as coal
combustion products, foundry sand, and demolition debris in construction projects [13] Building
materials should be extracted and manufactured locally to the building site to minimize the energy
embedded in their transportation. Where possible, building elements should be manufactured off-site
and delivered to site, to maximise benefits of off-site manufacture including minimising waste,
maximising recycling (because manufacture is in one location), high quality elements, better OHS
management, less noise and dust.

The most criticized issue about constructing environmentally friendly buildings is the price. Photo-
voltaics, new appliances, and modern technologies tend to cost more money. Most green buildings cost
a premium of <2%, but yield 10 times as much over the entire life of the building.[19] The stigma is
between the knowledge of up-front cost[20] vs. life-cycle cost. The savings in money come from more
efficient use of utilities which result in decreased energy bills. Also, higher worker or student
productivity can be factored into savings and cost deductions. Studies have shown over a 20 year life
period, some green buildings have yielded $53 to $71 per square foot back on investment.[21] It is
projected that different sectors could save $130 Billion on energy bills.[22]
This studio laboratory is comprised of three clusters of courses: Architectural Structures, Building Construction and Utilities.
All of these courses shall be carried out on the premise that these specialized fields of concern must be integrated into the
design process. Instead of being factored in after the building form has thought out, these components may be considered
as potential form-givers.
PROBLEMS
The relatively high cost of constructing and maintaining structures in the Philippines is largely due to inefficient building
systems and highly-customized building components.
Asset management becomes burdensome when life spans of buildings are threatened by the occurrences of disasters.
Recent cases of disasters are attributable to faulty designs of building utility systems and to the lack of safety features.
Some disasters result from a dearth in understanding on the capacity thresholds of the natural environment.

Designing based on local realities is a direction that is being derailed by influences of western examples. Skyscrapers that do
not factor in local climate need to be re-thought considering the implications on cost and quality of life of the users.
Again, issues that have to do with health and energy conservation should not be considered as after thoughts but as integral
parts of the designed environment.
PROBLEMS
Concepts that worked in their original contexts but are not necessarily relevant to the local setting.
These highly-marketable designs, however, can translate to very huge costs in terms of physical and psychological well-
being. They can also redound to very high costs of operation and maintenance.
RESPONSES
Concepts that flow in from the west may be modified to adapt to local environmental conditions.
Context-specific designs will not only translate to lower costs of investments and maintenance.
They can also enhance our sense of identity and contribute to the definition of the type of landscape architecture that can
truly be called Filipino.
The course syllabi under this studio laboratory have been developed on the premise that the architectural profession is
necessarily part of a bigger spectrum of concerns that entail a comprehensive and inter-disciplinary approach. The lectures
will further emphasize the need for collaboration with other entities to come out with viable and sustainable design
solutions. The topic modules will also highlight the need to consider the socio-cultural, political, economic dimensions in
dealing with physical problems.
PROBLEMS
Towns and cities are like living organisms that can go through the usual life cycle that involves birth, growth and death.
Each of these stages is naturally accompanied by problems that need to be addressed before they go out of hand.
The process of urbanization brings with it problems such as congestion, inadequate facilities and blight. Unsustained growth
brings about social ills such as health decline, poverty and unemployment.
Like human beings, these towns and cities have unique characters that can easily get eroded as planners superimpose plans
that are so detached from what the local context calls for.
RESPONSES
Town and city plans are two-dimensional translations of the multi-dimensional nature of the political domains that they are
prepared for.
The Urban Design Studio Laboratory is anchored on a planning concept that is holistic and interdisciplinary.
Master plans are physical translations of social, cultural, political and economic realities that make up the totality of towns
and cities.
Growth can be sustained and steered in the desired direction if physical plans are tied up with other concerns such as peace
and order, education, health, finance and legislation.
The courses in this series will introduce the students to the full range of career paths that they can pursue after graduation.
While the present syllabi is heavy on discussions on private architectural design practice, the proposed syllabi shall cover
matters leading to practice in the academe, in research, building administration/maintenance, in the public sector and
others.
The courses shall also equip the students with the basic information they will need to go into global practice.
PROBLEMS
The quality of many of our public spaces and edifices speak of building and planning laws that need re-assessment.
Laws can be technically unreasonable, inconsistent with the local context or simply obsolete.
Laws can be very exclusive when the provisions can be understood only by a few.
Laws regulating practice limit the opportunities for partnership between the professionals and the public sector.
RESPONSES
The architect has an important role to play in the whole system of public governance. Architectural practice goes beyond
setting up an office.
The practice encompasses public concerns such as health and safety, urban and regional management.
The Local Government Code provides for the installation of a City Architect tasked to formulate measures to ensure the
delivery of basic services and adequate facilities.
Future directions are based on a framework that intends to produce graduates that are adequately prepared to proceed to
varied fields of practice. The first three years comprising of six Architectural Design courses will be geared at the basic and
general knowledge that will enable students to appreciate the total realm of architecture. The fourth year will offer them
options leading to particular fields of interest such as Urban Design, Housing, Building Science and People-Environment
Studies.
PROBLEMS
But what human behavior can one expect if these containers are characterized by incoherence, lack of order and sheer
violation of aesthetic principles.
In many cases, the physical environment reflects sub-human existence that can lead to loss of self-esteem, social
dysfunction and lack of national identity.
Disasters that cost human lives result from the indiscreet defacement of the natural environment and from the unregulated
use of natural resources.
RESPONSES
These are the personal spaces that bring out the individual’s fullest productive potentials.
These are also the community spaces that enhance interpersonal relations and those that heighten sense of nationalism.
These are the kinds of spaces that allow for peaceful co-existence between man-made elements and the natural
environment.
The discussion of the evolution of architectural theories cannot be detached from the events in history that provide the
backdrop against which thoughts, values and principles developed. Hence, the studio laboratory pushed for the integration
of the History of Architecture series with the Architectural Design Theory series.
A third component -- ‘Criticism’ was added as an acknowledgment of the need to systematize the process of evaluation of
the elements of the built environment. A whole course is devoted to Philippine Architecture to fully cover the issues related
to the development of our cultural heritage manifested in the built form.
PROBLEMS
There is a prevailing sentiment that the pursuit of progress weakens our anchorage to our past as a people. Development is
often seen as synonymous with the erosion of culture and identity.
This perception is brought about by the effects of the process of urbanization and industrialization on the form of our built
environment.
The proliferation of skyscrapers, foreign-inspired settlements and state-of-the-art production centers are testimonies to our
willingness to abandon what is relevant to us in exchange for the internationally acknowledged indicators of development.
RESPONSES
Dealing with nationalism and development need not always entail a case of choosing one over the other. Filipinos need not
pay the high price of catching up with foreign-imposed standards of development.
Strengthened links with our past are enhancers of, rather than impediments to the process of development. Our history is a
rich oasis of lessons from which future undertakings can take off.
We need to preserve our historical sites and monuments. Comprehending the psyche of Filipinos can evolve from an
understanding of their creations.
Historical sites and monuments are the physical manifestations of unique beliefs and the complicated web of linkages that
define social organizations.
