Shenango Reservoir Paddle (North Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania)
Oct 3, 2010 Trip Log:: We paddled this section of the Reservoir today with Temps in the mid 70s and occasional light rain. A pleasant Fall day to
be on the water. Most of the local rivers were too high to be safely paddled by my younger children so we set out on a calm adventure. A quick day
trip starting in Orangeville Ohio.
Our put in point was where Pymatuning Creek starts to form Shenango Reservoir. We launched at Andy Dorick Park which is on the Ohio/PA
border at the corner of Rt 609 and North Stateline Rd. The first mile of the paddle was very creek like. A nice current and somewhat narrow. The
water quickly started to widen at the start of mile 2. The fishing also seemed very good as we saw numerous large fish break water. In the stream
portion the water was fairly muddy. We encountered no hazards which made it great for the young ones. There are endless bays and small creeks to
explore. Depending on your allotted time, you can make this trips last as long as you wish.
The last 2 miles were clearly more lake like. It is a “no wake” zone, and many more places to paddle into and explore. The water cleared along
the way. We saw two turtles sunbathing on the bank. Another mile and a half put us under the old railroad bridge and into the main lake. An imme-
diate right turn brought us to the paved boat launch, our intended take-out point at Parkers Landing.
Only a 2 hour trip with little paddling, both boys (age 8 & 10) said this trip was a definite “do again”. As for me, I think I could spend several
hours along this 3 mile paddle casting a line and practicing catch and release. Not a spectacular paddle, but being on the water enjoying Fall just
doesn’t get any better! See more Shenango info on page 3 Col 1. Article Courtesy of David Armstrong algoessailing@aol.com
