EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This is the internship report based on the two-month long internship program that I had successfully
completed in Tolaroid Technologies Pvt., Egypt under Marketing, Sales, Financial Analysis & Content
Creation across various communication channels along with feedback from 15.06.2019 to 04.08.2019
as a partial fulfilment of the requirement for the award of degree of Bachelor of Business Administration.
As being completely new to practical, corporate world setting, every hour spent gave me some amount of
experience all the time all of which cannot be explained in words. But nevertheless, they were all useful for
my career.

This report exhibits that companies in the contemporary times are not only customer centric, but also
proactive towards the importance of channel satisfaction. My purpose of the study was to deeply
understand on how organizations maintain channel satisfaction and whether their customer base is relishing
their alliance, or it needs improvements. My research is primarily descriptive. To sum it up, the intention
was to find out how companies strategically maintain channel satisfaction and whether the company reaps
benefit from this loyalty while creating competitive advantage or not.

Tolaroid Technologies Pvt. has a rich and diverse customer base since their inception. The core team is
completely organized and well reputed team, spread across various regions of Egypt.

First six weeks of my internship program, I have worked on the product range and prospective customers
along with scrutinizing the existing consumer base, followed by the surveys in the last few weeks. It was so
kind of their chairman to allow me to attend few meetings along with him, imparting unparalleled business
wisdom.

My personal views and my value addition are included in the report. With limited knowledge and experience
I tried my best to make this report as much understandable as possible and translated a short stinted acquired
real-world experience into a document. The various boundaries to process improvement and maintaining
ethical standards in a corporate environment have also been experienced. But even so, how those policies
and practices are In-Line with the corporate strategy are discussed in this report.

Before drawing any conclusion based on this report it may be noted that the report was prepared in a very
short term and there is lack in data. But still the report may be useful for designing any further study.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

I. INTRODUCTION

IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY

The iron and steel business is an important and strategic industry for any given community as it plays a key
role in developing the industry and the economy as a whole.

The Egyptian steel sector is the second largest steel market in the Middle East and North Africa region in
terms of production and the third largest in terms of consumption.

The Egyptian steel industry represents one of the cornerstones of Egypt’s economic growth and
development, due to its linkages to almost all other industries that stimulate economic expansion such as
construction, housing, infrastructure, consumer goods and automotive. All these industries rely heavily on

9

steel industry and so the importance and development of the steel sector is imperative for the progress of the
Egyptian economy in general.

BREAD INDUSTRY

The bread making process originated in ancient times. The basis of the operation is to mix flour with other
ingredients, for example, water, fat, salt and some source of aeration followed by baking. As long ago as
2,000 BC the Egyptians knew how to make fermented bread. The practice was to use a little old dough, or
leaven, to "start" the new dough. These two doughs were mixed together and allowed to ferment (rise) for
some hours before baking. They made an astonishing 50 varieties of bread, paid wages with bread, and
painted breadmaking scenes in their tombs.

A variety of methods have since been developed in making leaven. The Baker's Patent required the
fermentation of hops and scalded malt for at least two to three days.

In the early 1900's it was discovered that traditional long fermentation times could be reduced from 18 to 3-4
hours by the use of very small amounts of certain chemicals, called oxidants, in bread or flour. Oxidants,
when added to dough, not only speed up the process but also produce a superior loaf.

8000 BC.

At first grain was crushed by hand with pestle and mortar. In Egypt a simple grinding stone (quern) was
developed. All bread was unleavened, there were no raising agents and bread was made from a mixed
variety of grains. Today’s equivalents are Indian chapattis and Mexican tortillas.

5000 – 3700 BC.

Egypt developed grain production along the fertile banks of the Nile. Grain became a staple food and spread
to the Balkans and throughout Europe, eventually being cultivated in Britain.

3000 BC.

Tougher wheat varieties were developed and the baking of bread became a skill in Egypt along with brewing
beer. In this warm climate wild yeasts were attracted to multi-grain flour mixtures and bakers experimented
with leavened doughs. The Egyptians invented the closed oven and bread assumed great significance.
Homage was paid to Osiris, the god of grain, and bread was used instead of money; the workers who built
the pyramids were paid in bread.

2300 BC.

In India grain cultivation began along the Indus valley.

10
Summer Training Report | TOLAROID TECHNOLOGIES PVT., EGYPT

1500 BC.

Horses took over ploughing from men, using the first iron ploughshares.

1050 BC.

The south of England became a centre of agriculture – barley and oats were grown freely; by 500 BC wheat
in Britain started to become important.

1000 BC.

In Rome risen, yeasted bread became popular and by 500 BC a circular quern was developed – a circular
stone wheel turned on another which was fixed. This was the basis of all milling until the industrial
revolution in the 19th century and is still the way stoneground flour is produced today.

450 BC.

In Greece the watermill was invented, although it was a few centuries before its significance was fully
realised.

150 BC.

In Rome the first bakers’ guilds were formed and well-to-do Romans insisted on the more exclusive and
expensive white bread – a preference which persists in Europe and English speaking countries to this day. A
Roman invented the first mechanical dough-mixer, powered by horses and donkeys.

55 BC.

Romans invaded Britain where wheat was still being crushed by hand and baked over open fires. More
sophisticated techniques were introduced, including watermills.

40 BC.

Bread and politics. In Rome the authorities decreed that bread should be distributed free to all adult males.

500 AD.

Saxons and Danes settled in Britain and introduced rye which was well suited to cold northern climates.
Dark rye bread became a staple which lasted to the Middle Ages.

600 AD.

11
Summer Training Report | TOLAROID TECHNOLOGIES PVT., EGYPT

The Persians are said to have invented the windmill. The power generated could drive much heavier stone
querns for milling but it was 600 years before they appeared in Western Europe.

TEXTILES INDUSTRY

Ancient Egyptian clothes refers to clothing worn in ancient Egypt from the end of the Neolithic period (prior
to 3100 BC) to the collapse of the Ptolemaic Kingdom with the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC. Egyptian
clothing was filled with a variety of colors. Adorned with precious gems and jewels, the fashions of the
ancient Egyptians were made for not only beauty but also comfort. Egyptian fashion was created to keep
cool while in the hot desert.

In ancient Egypt, linen was by far the most common textile. It helped people to be comfortable in the
subtropical heat. Linen is made from the flax plant by spinning the fibers from the stem of the plant.
Spinning, weaving and sewing were very important techniques for all Egyptian societies. Plant dyes could be
applied to clothing but the clothing was usually left in its natural color. Wool was known, but considered
impure. Only the wealthy wore animal fibers that were the object of taboos. They were used on occasion for
overcoats, but were forbidden in temples and sanctuaries.

Peasants, workers and other people of modest condition often wore nothing, but the shenti (made of flax)
was worn by all people. Slaves often worked naked.

The most common headdress was the khat or nemes, a striped cloth worn by men.

Egyptian textile industry is very ancient dating back to the age of the pharaohs. The country is the pivot for
vertically integrated textile industry in the Middle Eastern region. The country involves complete production
process right from the cultivation of cotton, to the making of yarns, fabrics, and ready made apparels. Textile
and apparel industry is the second largest sector, next to agro, and plays a major role in shaping the Egyptian
economy.

Industry Overview:

Apparel sector accounts for 3% of GDP and 27% of the industrial output. 25% of the total industry is
focused on textile production, of which 12% are engaged in home textiles, 8% in cotton yarn, and 5% in
other textiles. Public sector dominates the production industry with 50% in spinning, 60% in hemming, and
60% in weaving. Private sector owns 90% of the garmenting side of the industry. Spinning and weaving
sector is being dominated by the large scale industries with a strong influence of public sector.

As per a research data of 2010, its textile sector consists of 3,243 companies with a total investment of 3.2
billion USD. Textile industries of Egypt produce 315 million apparels, and exports 305,000 tons of cloth and
apparel annually. US constitute 80% of the countrys export market, followed by EU and Arabian countries
comprising the remaining 20%.

White gold of Egypt:

Cotton cultivated in Egypt has international appreciation for its excellence. Egypt had contracts with 23
international countries for cotton exports amounting to USD 140.882 million during 2009-10. Egypt has
many favorable factors that have made it attractive in the global textile arena. Core areas for investment in
Egypt are cotton cultivation, yarn making, spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting, and RMG sectors. Egypt
imports yarn from Turkey, India, Pakistan and Turmenistan, and grey fabrics for RMG industry from India,
Bangladesh, and Turkey. Main markets for Egypt are the Arabian countries, EU and US. Cotton and textile
fabrics ranked third in the countrys exports accounting for 25% of the total exports.

Factors benefiting Egypt in the global market:

Egypt has adequate labor resource. Wages are competitive and stable. Government runs various training
programmes, continuously upgrading the skill sets of the labors. The location of the country facilitates quick
and easy exports to other countries such as Asia, Africa, and Europe. It is closer to US than its counterparts
which makes it a preferred sourcing location. Egypt is equipped with 15 commercial ports facilitating its
exports.

Comparative analysis of labor cost of Egypt with other countries

Textile industry has clustered in the main areas of Egypt.

 The Canal region is dedicated to denim production and imports of thick cotton yarns. The Suez Canal
facilitates its exports to Europe and Asia.
 The Alexandria region facilitates exports through its ports.
 Middel Delta region where new players are establishing their business.

Mr Mohamed Midani, Board Member of Midani Group of Companies discusses the textile scenario of Egypt
at length with Fibre2fashions team.

What factors make Egyptian textiles competitive in the global arena?

"Egypt is an evolving country; so far we have achieved very promising scales in fields of industry and
economics. We have a lot of good points that encourage us to improve and compete like electricity cost,
labor cost, export funding".

What are the challenges you see for the textile sector?

"One of our major problems in our industry is not having our main raw materials PET Chips produced in
Egypt in enough scale, so we have to export it from outside which eventually decreases our competitive
abilities a bit."

Which countries are the major markets for Egyptian textiles?

"Knitwear market size is growing rapidly and it is very promising in the near future, especially about
countries like India, South Africa, Spain, Morroco, Algeria, Pakistan and others. These countries are major
consumers and main targets for knitted fabrics."

Where do you see the industry in the years to come?

26
Summer Training Report | TOLAROID TECHNOLOGIES PVT., EGYPT

"I truly believe that within couple of years to come i.e. may be 3 or 4 years ahead, we will witness a great
increasing in the potential, I am very optimistic about that."
Healthy working conditions in the QIZ zones:

Egypt offers a favorable cost-effective environment due to its infrastructure, reliable low cost electricity, gas
and water utilities. It has signed a QIZ agreement with US and Israel stating that 35% of its commodities are
made in a qualifying zone and minimum 10.5% of its products are made from Israeli materials. This
agreement enables Egypts manufacturers tariff and quota fee access into the US markets.

The recent documents of Wikileaks, as published in The Telegraph reveal Egypt as a competitive sourcing
country, with a positive reputation for cotton exports. Officers from the New York's Jones Apparel Group
state that they do not see any negative environment in the QIZ factories. This gives Egypt a competitive edge
among its Southeast Asian rivals.

The Telegraph reports Kesavi Murali, the Senior Compliance Specialist in the Middle East for Jones Apparel
Group saying, "In addition to favorable customs treatment under the QIZ, production in Egypt provides cost
advantages and efficiencies in production lead time since Egypt is located closer to the U.S. than most other
suppliers. While other producers such as Bangladesh, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka have lost market share,
Egypt has gained market share".

Despite all the positives, the country still has to take care of a few factors. The Telegraph quotes Murali
saying, "Egypt was a better producer than countries who use migrant labor, though Egypt does suffer from
high worker turnover which damages operational efficiency". He said that from his standpoint, there were no
labor issues with local labor, the main issues in Egyptian factories are qualitative management issues and a
lack of health and safety awareness. (Source: telegraph.co.uk)

Egypt has potential opportunities to expand both in the local and international markets. With much care,
effort, and Government patronage, textile sector revenue can be doubled and a sustainable annual growth
could be achieved.
