ABSTRACT:
The paper focuses on the waste materials generated from industries and agriculture to develop on alternative
construction material i.e. light weight aggregate concrete to reduce environmental issues. It also paved the way to
recognition of using coconut shell as substitute for aggregates in developing concrete blocks. It is basically on
replacement effects, partial replacement of coarse aggregate as coconut shell. The properties of coconut shell and
the use of coconut shell aggregate in construction is tested, as it shows a significant self-weight reduction. The
coconut shell has been crushed first, then it was sieved, to get the optimum size which retained on 10mm sieve
and passing through 12mm sieve. Secondly ceasing in done to the crushed coconut shell by applying one coat of
turpentine oil and spreading fine aggregate over to it in order to make it non detroriable. Replacement of cement
with mineral admixture like fly ash to reduce the greenhouse effect and use of basalt fibre to overcome various
deficiencies in concrete. Cement is replacement with fly ash to improve the permeability of concrete, low heat of
hydration and to resistant against acid attack. To improve the structural integrity basalt fibre is used because of its
high thermal conductivity, good bonding and gives good strength to arrest the crack. In this study, the main
objective is to develop the mix proportion for fly ash based concrete were coconut shell is mixed in percentage by
weight of concrete similarly fly ash is also added in certain percentage and basalt fiber is added in different
volume fraction until a optimum mix is arrived by using M45 grade concrete. Comparisons were made between
conventional concrete with concrete mix coconut shell. This paper presents the result on workability, compression
strength, split tensile strength, flexure strength and water absorption test of concrete by partial replacement of
coarse aggregate as coconut shell.
