Learning activity 3: Identify the country's tourism offer as an input and scenario for
tourism guidance and recognize the use of technical English in techniques and
processes for guidance.

Identify basic concepts to elaborate a concept map

For all people it is essential to know the history of the country in all areas: social,
cultural, natural, among others. For the tour guide it is essential to know the history of
tourism, its importance in the economic, social and gastronomic development of a
country, as well as to know the evolution of tourism through history and its impact in all
contexts.

The purpose of this activity is to evaluate the ability to understand a simple text and to
communicate its main ideas through a structured visual text. With this exercise, the
apprentice will demonstrate the ability to integrate new and old knowledge, to generate
ideas and use a visual representation to develop a holistic understanding of the whole
text.

Please, follow the next steps to build a concept map based on the text:

1. Consult the “How to be a good tour guide” learning material.

2. Consult on the internet tools that allow you to make concept maps.

3. Read the text Culture and heritage.

4. Synthesize and prioritize information in the text, selecting only the most important
concepts to explain what is interpreted in the text.

5. Create a list of the most relevant or necessary concepts to understand the meaning
of the text.

6. Then join the concepts through connecting lines and words that serve as a link,
which explain the relationship between the concepts that come together.

7. For the development of this evidence take into account the web tool previously
consulted.

8. The extension of the file can be a picture in .JPG format or a document in .PDF
format. Send the file or the web link to the instructor, through the virtual learning
platform.
Culture and heritage

Tourism is a cultural fact. Through the exercise of tourism knowledge and experience can
be exchanged. Thus, tourism implies social interaction. Therefore, one way of working in
tourism is through tangible and intangible cultural heritage owned by both the traveler and
the social group that receives the visitor. Tourism is a tool that allows us to know and enjoy
customs, traditions, languages, performing arts, festivities, rituals, beliefs, folklore dance,
music and in general the communities cultural expressions; in other words, the rich and
diverse intangible cultural heritage that is daily created and recreated.

Cultural tourism

Is the subset of tourism concerned with a country or region’s culture, specifically the
lifestyle of the people in those geographical areas, the history of those peoples, their art,
architecture, religion(s), and other elements that helped shape their way of life. Travel for
essentially cultural motivations, which may include travel for specific purposes, for example,
to attend festivals or to visit sites or monuments, or may be more broadly motivated by the
desire to experience cultural diversity or to immerse oneself in the culture of a region.

Heritage tourism

Is a leisure trip with the primary purpose of visiting historic, cultural, natural, recreational
and scenic attractions to learn more about the past in an enjoyable way.

Nature tourism

It is tourism based on the natural attractions of an area. Examples include bird watching,
photography, stargazing, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, and visiting parks. These
experiential tourists are interested in a diversity of natural and cultural resources. They want
what is real, and they want to be immersed in a rich natural, cultural, or historical
experience. (Texas parks and wildlife, s.f.)
