There are two distinct types of membrane:

• Unsupported, where the active substrate is present as a cast sheet (e.g. Hybond ECL
nitrocellulose membrane).
• Supported, where the active substrate is present and cast on to an inert 'web' or support
(e.g. Hybond-N [nylon], Hybond-N+ [charged nylon], and Hybond-C Extra [nitrocellulose]).

Hybond N+
Hybond-N+ is a positively charged nylon membrane that yields excellent sensitivity in all
nucleic acid applications. Nucleic acid samples may be fixed by simple alkali treatment or
alkali blotting rather than UV exposure or baking; however, UV fixation is recommended
for maximum reproducibility. Hybond N+ is recommended for both radioactive and non-
radioactive protocols.
Hybond-N+ also has excellent properties for high-density macroarrays.

Hybond-XL
Hybond-XL is a charged nylon membrane designed exclusively for radioactive nucleic
acid transfer applications to achieve an improved signal-to-noise ratio. It has a greater
concentration and a more even distribution of positive charge than other charged nylon
membranes. Hybond-XL produces excellent results with a wide variety of applications
and target/probe combinations. This membrane retains all the advantages of other nylon
membranes such as high nucleic acid binding capacity and high tensile strength.

Hybond-N
Hybond-N is a neutral nylon membrane capable of high sensitivity in DNA and RNA
blotting. It is a strong, supported membrane that is inherently hydrophilic and requires
no pre-wetting. It is easy to quickly cross-link nucleic acids to nylon using UV light. This
makes Hybond-N ideal for any standard radioactive Southern or Northern blotting
procedure.

Hybond Atlas cDNA Expression Arrays
Hybond Atlas Array products represent a comprehensive range of high-density pre-
arrayed membranes that enable the expression of significant numbers of genes to be
screened simultaneously. These macroarrays each contain hundreds of carefully selected,
well characterized, arrayed cDNAs and offer the highest quality expression data.
Combining Amersham Biosciences' expertise in membrane hybridization and detection
with Clontech's expertise in expression arrays, Hybond Atlas Arrays are carefully
designed, pre-made macroarrays produced specifically for Amersham Biosciences by
Clontech Laboratories Inc.
Hybond Atlas Arrays provide sophisticated information, but are relatively inexpensive and
simple to use. They are designed to be accessible to all laboratories performing isotopic
blot hybridization experiments and optimized to be screened using RedivueTM nucleotides.
They are visualized using standard procedures, such as scanning with our range of
Typhoon™ Variable Mode Imagers, and are supplied with labelling, purification, and
hybridization reagents.
Hybond Atlas RNA Purification and Labelling Kit combines the purification of total
RNA and subsequent labelling of cDNA probes to be used with Hybond Atlas Arrays
in one experiment.

Hybond Northern Blots
Hybond Northern Blots are ready-made, ready to hybridize RNA blots for gene function studies:
• Analysis of the size and relative abundance of transcripts in different tissues
• Investigation of gene families and alternative splice forms
• Assessment of cross-species homology using different Hybond Northern Blots

Hybond-P
A hydrophobic polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane optimized for use in protein
transfers. With higher physical strength than unsupported nitrocellulose, Hybond-P offers
significant handling advantages and is ideal for reprobing. It is particularly recommended
for use with ECL Plus™ Western Blotting Detection Reagents and gives excellent results
with ECL Glycoprotein Detection System.

• High mechanical strength with a protein binding capacity of 125 µg/cm2.

• Chemically stable, allowing the use of a range of solvents for rapid destaining.

An unsupported 100% nitrocellulose membrane that delivers excellent sensitivity,
resolution, and low background for all labelling and detection systems.

• Validated for use with the ECL Western Blotting System.

Hybond-C Extra
A supported mixed ester nitrocellulose with high physical strength. Hybond-C Extra
may be used in all protein transfer and detection procedures, but is particularly
recommended for expression screening because it gives high signal-to-noise and is easy
