Problem 1 (Chapter 1: Introduction to Machinery Principles)


A magnetic core and its equivalent magnetic circuit are given below. The depth of the core is 6 cm,
the length of the air-gap in the core is 0.05 cm, and the number of turns on the coil is 1200 turns.
The relative permeability of the core is 3800, and the space free permeability is 4π*10-7 H/m.
Assume a 4 % increase in the effective air-gap area to account for fringing.
1. Show the polarity of the magneto-motive force and the direction of the flux on the
equivalent circuit.
2. Calculate the total reluctance.
3. If the current i = 1.5 Ampere, what is the resultant flux in the core?

Problem 2 (Chapter 2: Transformers)


A 19.2 KVA, 19200/460-V, 60 Hz, single-phase transformer is tested with the following results:

Open-circuit test Short-circuit test

a- Calculate and Sketch the equivalent circuit of this transformer when referred to its low-
voltage side.

The transformer is now loaded: 12 KW load, 0.8 lagging PF, and a load voltage of 410 V.

b- Find the voltage on the high-voltage side of the transformer.


c- Find the voltage regulation and the efficiency of this transformer.
Problem 3 (Chapter 7: DC Machinery Principles)
An eight-pole, 24 KW, 100 V, DC machine has a duplex LAP-wound armature which has 32
coils with 16 turns per coil. Its rated speed is 1500 RPM. Assume a dead zone of 4 coils that are
always beyond poles faces. Find:

1. Find the flux per pole to produce the rated voltage at no-load conditions
2. Calculate the current per path in the armature of this generator at the rated load. Assume no
losses in the machine.
3. Find the induced torque in this machine at the rated load.
4. How many commutator segments are in this machine?
5. How many brushes must this motor have? How wide must each brush be?

Problem 4 (Chapter 8: DC Motors)


A shunt DC motor rated at 64 HP, 200-V, 3600 RPM. It has an armature resistance RA =
0.08 Ω . When the motor is operating at rated conditions, with field current Radj + RF = 200 Ω, its
speed has been found as 2800 RPM, and the armature current IA = 120 Amp.

1. Sketch the power flow diagram of this motor.


2. Calculate he output power and the input power in
Watt
3. Find the efficiency of this motor.
4. Deduce the power converted from electrical to
mechanical.
5. Calculate the sum of all the mechanical power
losses in the motor.
6. What is the induced torque by this machine ?
7. Deduce the starting line current drawn by this
motor.

Problem 5 (Chapter 3: Basic AC machinery)


A 3-phase, 2-pole, 60-Hz, Y-connected AC generator has a stator with 36 slots, each slot
contains 40 conductors. The conductors of each phase are connected in series. The flux per pole is
given as 40 mWb.
(a) What is the speed of rotation of the magnetic field in RPM?
(b) Write both the electrical and the mechanical angular speeds of this machine.
(c) What are the instantaneous three-phase voltages of the generator?
(d) What are the RMS phase and the RMS terminal voltages of this generator?
Problem 6 (Chapter 4: Three-Phase Synchronous Generators)

A six pole, Y-connected synchronous generator rated at 425 KVA, 2.4 KV, 0.9 PF lagging, and
60 Hz frequency. Its armature resistance is 0.3 Ω, and its synchronous reactance is 6 Ω.
If the generator is operating at its rated conditions with an efficiency of 86% ;

(1) Determine the speed of rotation in RPM.


(2) Determine the rated current and the internal generated voltage of this generator. What is the
torque angle?
(3) What is the voltage regulation of this generator?
(4) Determine the electrical losses in this generator.
(5) Determine the sum of PF&W + Pcore + Pstray losses of the generator.
(6) What input torque must be applied to the shaft of this generator by the prime mover?

Problem 7 (Chapter 5: Three-Phase Synchronous Motors)


A 2300 V, 400 HP, 50 Hz, eight-pole, 0.85 Leading PF, Y-connected synchronous motor is
considered in this problem. Its armature resistance is negligible, and the synchronous
reactance is 8 Ω.
Find the following quantities for this machine when it is operating at rated conditions, with
constant Friction, Windage, and core losses of 35 KW:
1. The motor’s shaft speed;
2. The output power in Watt and the electrical input power to the motor;
3. The armature current;
4. The internal generated voltage and the corresponding torque angle;

Problem 8
A 3-phase, 381 V, 50-Hz, 6-pole, Y-connected induction motor is driving a 30 HP load at
82% efficiency.
The total friction, windage, and core losses can be assumed to be constant at 2400 W,
independent of load. The motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency at a per-unit
slip of 0.08.
(a) Find the shaft speed of the motor in RPM and in rad/sec.
(b) Find the electrical input power Pin.
(c) What is the converted power from electrical to mechanical Pconv.
(d) Calculate the induced torque τind.
(e) Deduce the total Copper Losses.
