This Environmental Product Declaration certificate, is issued by MRPI (www.mrpi.nl), and is verified by IVAM UvA
(www.ivam.uva.nl). The Life Cycle Assessment underlying this EPD was conducted by EcoReview, Environmental Consultants
(www.ecoreview.nl). The data on this EPD certificate are based on the European Standard EN 15804:2012; on the Dutch national
guidelines from the SBK protocol of November 2011; and on MRPI’s internal review protocol. The IVAM verification meets the
standard of the ECO-Platform verification.

VISUAL REPRESENTATION PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Ecocem is a high quality ground granulated blastfurnace slag

(GGBS). Blastfurnace slag originates as a limestone based
by-product of the smelting of iron ore. Granulated slag is
ground to a fine dry off-white powder, and has a chemistry
similar to that of ordinary Portland cement. Ecocem is
normally used in combination with an alkaline material (such
as Portland cement) in making cementitous-based products.
The Irish Concrete Standard permits concrete to comprise up
to 70% Ecocem, the remainder being Portland cement; the UK
concrete standard permits concrete to comprise up to 80%.
The mineral composition of Ecocem is given in the table
below.

Ecocem Superfine is the same material as Ecocem, only

ground finer. The finer particle size is achieved by grinding
the granulated slag for a longer period than for Ecocem.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROFILE AND RATINGS REPRESENTIVE

Ecocem and Ecocem Superfine are manufactured in Dublin, Ireland. The raw material (granulated blastfurnace slag, GBS) is
imported into Dublin from blastfurnaces sited on the northwest coast of Europe: Spain and Belgium. Ecocem and Ecocem
Superfine are used predominantly in the market on the island of Ireland, although from time to time, material is exported to other
EU states.

QUALITATIVE INFORMATION RELATED CERTIFICATES

Ecocem is mostly used as cementitous binder in concrete, but is also used in shotcrete,
mine backfilling and grouting applications. Ecocem Superfine is used in specialist DIY
products. Because Ecocem is a recycled product, it has a very low environmental
impact, and is used to minimize the embodied CO2 and embodied energy of cementitous EN 15167
and concrete products. Because its chemistry is slightly different to Portland cement, it ISO 14001
imparts additional durability benefits to concrete, such as improved resistance to
sulphate attack, acid attack, and chloride attack. It also gives concrete greater long-term
strength than that made with just ordinary Portland cement. And because of its whitish
colour, it gives concrete a lighter, cleaner appearance.
DATA QUALITY

For the Life Cycle Assessment calculations, Simapro 7.3.3 has been used, applying Ecoinvent v2.2 LCIs for transport and the
upstream and downstream processes.
The base year 2011 has been selected to acquire the inventory data. For the electricity mix base data from 2013 was used
because the switch to another supplier has been made.

ACCOUNTABILITY
CEN standard EN 15804:2012 serves as the basis for the core Product Category Rules for developing this EPD.
Independent verification of the declaration has been carried out according to EN ISO 14025:2010, by the eternal third party

The data on this MRPI®-certificate are based on the guidelines from the SBK protocol of November 2011 and the MRPI®-review
protocol for the NEN8006:2004, version 2.0.

As a general rule, a comparison or evaluation of EPD data is only possible when all of the data records to be compared have
been drawn up in accordance with EN 15804, and the building context and/or product-specific performance features are taken
into consideration.
