The Effect of Inadequacy of Vocabulary
Problem/Issue about Language: in English Communication

Specific location: Southeastern College of Padada Inc.

Affected Participants (Respondents): Grade 7

Introduction

Vocabulary is fundamental to English communication. One cannot understand


the context without knowing what most of the words mean. It helps to know how to
use language, where to use each word and when to use it in a correct manner. As
we can get to know how to frame sentences, how to use words in dialogues while
speaking to others. It is intimately connected to effective listening, speaking, reading
and writing skills and these skills in turn are necessary for doing well in school.
Through the data we gathered the most common reasons that the students in
Grade 7 High School of Southeastern College of Padada, Inc. our main respondent
in our study has an insufficient vocabularies for most of the reasons are not
completing the educational school standards, does not read much or has a reading
problem and does pay attention to words. Thus, resulting to ineffective
communication.
The purpose of this study is to present the effect of inadequacy of vocabulary
in English communication. And the strategies and exercises into Grade 7 students of
Southeastern College of Padada, Inc. as a way to boost vocabulary learning
communicative competence and to adopt suitable speaking skills in a certain
situation in communication. It also examine the reasons behind the student’s poor
communication skills and to come up with a solution to the problem.
This research, we aimed to find out difficulties and problems in inadequacy of
vocabulary in English Communication; to improve communication skills of students
and to provide suggestions for improvement
This study shall highlight and focus on the causes and the negative effects of
such difficulties and problems of inadequacy of vocabularies and tries to find suitable
solution in every cases.

The importance of the study as the title refers it investigates the problems of
inadequacy of vocabulary that the students faced. It also offers recommendations for
expanding the students vocabulary based on the results obtained from this study.
That enable the students to develop a wide of range of skills including speaking,
writing, reading and listening as well. It also help the students enhance their
communication skills and enrich their vocabulary in order to communicate well
precisely and proficiently.

This study, we researched the problems in inadequacy of vocabulary that face


to the Grade 7 students of Southeastern College of Padada, Inc. It aims to seek
opinions on the extent to which inadequacy of vocabulary has influenced on
performance in listening, reading comprehension and conversation classes and
expressing ideas and feelings, especially in composition, and academic debate
classes. To carry out the objectives of this research paper. The study of this
research most of the individual showed that the majority of the students surveyed
had the problem of short of vocabulary which in turn had a negative effect on their
performance of language skills. According to Nyikos and Fansmastering (2010)
vocabulary is one of the most challenging tasks that any learner faces while
acquiring another language.
We interviewed one of the Grade 7 student that has weak in expressive and
oral vocabulary (refers to express themselves and the combination of listening and
speaking vocabularies). He stated that, he has lack of confidence in expressing
answers because he is weak in the use of words and afraid to be criticized and to be
laughed by others. Thus, the effect of this, the learners can’t participate in the class
well, and can’t acquire the meaning of words because of hesitation. Students will fall
behind and lost, found it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings and has a
negative impact on academic performance. According to Mckay and McKay (2012)
argue that having enough vocabulary gives learners the ability to express
themselves precisely and be explicit instead of vague.
Another respondent from Grade 7 answered our survey with this question,
“Why do some students have limited, inadequate vocabulary compared to other
classmates?” She stated, “because of limited exposure to books, it leads to become
a reluctant reader.” In this case of language learning, poorest readers have the
weakest vocabulary. They need to educate with the strategies to help the learners
acquiring the meaning of words. Learning vocabulary from the context is effective to
poor readers. Lawrence et al (2010) suggests that vocabulary instruction in schools,
the teaching team needs to select vocabulary words to teach, ensure that these
words are repeated and that students are well-exposed to their usage, encourage
students experiment with the use of these words and teach them word learning
strategies.
From the research, we know that vocabulary supports effective
communication, reading development and increases comprehension. Students with
low vocabulary tend to have low comprehension and students with high vocabulary
tend to have high comprehension scores.

Conclusion

In this case, the findings revealed that participants in Grade 7 High School in
Southeastern College of Padada, Inc. experienced slow vocabulary development
and are less able to comprehend due to not paying attention to words. The study
shows that vocabulary is central to English language teaching and learning. We can
conclude that our respondents in Grade 7 have inadequate vocabulary and lack of
vocabulary knowledge is an obstacle to learning. The study showed that vocabulary
was significant in helping students understand the meaning of words.
In this particular group of respondents, the researchers suggests that several
strategies are especially valuable for students, including know the meaning of basic
words, and providing sufficient review and reinforcement. Finally, we discuss
challenges in designing effective vocabulary instruction for the students. Important
issues are determining which words to teach, taking into account the large deficits in
second‐language vocabulary of students, and working with the limited time that is
typically available for direct instruction in vocabulary.
SOLUTIONS FOR THE PROMLEM/ISSUE:

A. Encourage Wide Reading. Use “instructional” Read-Aloud events.


B. Teaching Specific Words to support understanding words and word-
learning strategies that students can use every day.
C. Promoting a keen awareness in a deep interest in language and to
motivate and engage students in learning new word.
D. Teach the effective, efficient, realistic use of dictionaries and other
reference work.
